Alzheimer’s Disease? Just do the maths.

I read today that people who do mathematics for fun are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as they get older.

The downside is of course, by the time the rest of us are going ga-ga they will have been nerds all their lives.

This does not seem like a good trade off to me

  1. I ran this past SezJez, who has just sat her Maths GCSE. She thinks ‘mathematics for fun’ is a contradiction in terms.
Here’s another thought, given the recent research which has finally shown, despite the assurances to the contrary, that maths exams are infinitely less demanding then they were twenty and thirty years ago, if you do the harder maths will you be more resistant than if you do the modern variety?
