Amateur environment minister and professional rent seeker Owen Paterson must read the same newspapers as Sarah Palin, the American totty who ran for US Vice President without knowing what the U.S. Capital City nor being able to na was (allegedly) me a single respected newspaper .
In the face of strong and growing opposition to Genetically Modified food crops across the E U, Paterson has said:
“Environment Secretary Owen Paterson says EU member states should approve a new strain of GM maize in a vote later this month.
Member states should approve a new strain of maize in a vote later this month, said Owen Paterson.
He argued that previous approval for GM crops had been blocked by the European Commission for political reasons.
If approval is granted then it will be the first GM food crop authorised for planting by the EU for 15 years, Mr Paterson told the Oxford Farming Conference. Europe risks becoming the museum of world farming as innovative companies make decisions to invest and develop new technologies in other markets.
And this only days after publication of a damning independent report on the health risks posed by glyphosate (Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide) delivered into the human food chain by crop plants genetically engineered to be resistant to its herbicidal effects.
The proposal covers a strain of insect-resistant maize and would become the second GM crop to be grown in the European Union after approval for another variety, resistant to the corn borer, was granted in 1998. ”
Hmmmm, wonder who paid him to say that. Mr. Paterson you see, should declare a conflict of interest and refrain from commenting on matters GM.”
Why you might well ask. Well for starters there’s this:
Owen Paterson is married to Rose Ridley, sister of Matt Ridley, that’s Matthew Ridley, son of Viscount Ridley, who is a genetic scientist and also sits in the House of Lords. He’s visiting professor at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory where they study plant genetics and specialize in phishing for research grants from Monsanto, Dow, Du Pont and Syngenta and others involved in GM biotech. Also, Cold Spring Lab are the main protagonists in the iPlant Collaborative. Look all this up if you doubt me.
Conflict of interest for Paterson? Look again at who fund the Cold Spring Harbor Lab? For those who don’t know, Monsanto have a virtual monopoly on GM wheat and Soy bean seeds stock, Dupont, through their subsidiary Pioneer Hi-bred International specialize in GMO corn (maize).
Well I said Paterson is a rent seeker, it’s beginning to look as though he sold his arse for the GM dollar. Hmm, perhaps he has more in common with Obama the rent boy President than he has with Sarah Palin.
