Hausfrau – Volksfuhrer Merkel – an unfortunate gesture from a German leader (Source)
Last year saw the tenth anniversary of Angela Merkel’s becoming Chancellor of Germany but far from consolidating her position as de fact political leader of the European Union, Chancellor Merkel seems to have developed a death wish and now her reputation as the unchalllengable dominatrix of the European Union is crumbling.
Merkel has been leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for 16 years but even her supremacy there is under threat. The woman who has dominated EU politics for a decade and enjoyed considerable popular support at home and respect abriad has lost her touch. One prominent German psychiatrist has even suggested the spelter chancellor is undergoing some kind of mental breakdown
Chancellor Merkel is also becoming increasingly isolated within Europe as well as within her own government as the EU struggles to cope with the refugee crisis and limps from panic to panic with more national leaders telling her Germany does not tell sovereign nations how to run their affairs.
Even her partners in the a grand coalition consisting of the CDU, its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) have either turned against her or lost confidence in her judgement as the disastrous consequences of her ‘open doors’ immigration policy become more apparent every day. They are also disenchanted with her increasingly authoritarian style of leadership.
Apparently clueless as to how the various crises affecting Germany can be dealt with, she is increasingly marginalized. The CSU is led by Horst Seehofer, one of the most severe critics of Merkel’s inept handling of the immigrant crisis, saying she is unable to admit failure. His southern German state has borne the brunt of the refugees flowing through Hungary and Austria having used the West Balkan route to fell Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and refugee camps in neighboring states.
She has also been reduced to trading insults with another coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) led by Sigmar Gabriel. He has rebuked Merkel for trying to set up transit camps for refugees that he said were akin to concentration camps. He also berated her for the slow response of the federal government is responding to the sheer volume of refugees entering Germany.
Merkel is a busted flush in Europe as well. Many EU states, most notably the former Warsaw Pact countries such as Hungary and Poland and the former soviet states on the Baltic and Black Sea have blamed her ‘open doors’ policy for precipitating the huge inflow of migrants arriving at Eurpoe’s borders without even basic travel documents. Many have slammed Merkel’s idea of mandatory quotas of refugees for each member state.
Are we witnessing the fall of the Fourth Reich?
Chaos in Europe
