Angela Merkel may be holding on to power in Germany by her fingernails as she stuggles to form a working coalition, six months after the incolclusive election last September, but the political cisis in not over, while Merkel’s standing in the country goes from bad to worse. Germans are intensifying their protests against Merkel’s open doors immigration policy which hasd caused unrest and division throughout Germany. Even the usually loyal apparatchiks of mainstream media seem to be turning against the chancellor and last month she was forced to acknowledge the existence in German cities of lawless “no – go zones” where paramedics, fire – fighters and even police dare not venture.
The most recent wave of protests in Germany’s started after the nation was shocked by the brutal murder of the 15-year-old Mia V, by an Afghan refugee (the full names are witheld due to their youth, according to German Law. The girl was attacked and murdered with a knife in a drug store in the town of Kandel.
A few courageous women started protesting in the city after it appeared the mayor was more concerned about xenophobia than about the safety of the citizens. The protest went bigger and later resulted in a march for Mia V under the motto: “Kandel is everywhere”.
Later there were protests in Cottbus, Hamburg, Dresden and Kandel again. Most protesters are concerned about how Germany is changing under Merkel and about migrant violence against women and girls. The murder of Mia is an extreme case in a large catalogue of violence and sex crimes against german women by immigrants.
The parents of the young girl from the small, peaceful town of Kandel in Rhineland-Palatinate are understandably inconsolable. The crime is incomprehensible to them, and becomes even more so when we learn that the prime suspect, a refugee from Afghanistan, Abdul D whom the girl had become involved with, was for a while, practically a member of the family. “We took him in as if he were a son,” the girl’s father said, according to the Bild tabloid newspaper. He has lost his only daughter. She was stabbed and killed by her former boyfriend, an unaccompanied refugee from Afghanistan.
The accused states that he is as old – or rather, as young – as his victim: 15. According to Bild, the girl’s father doesn’t believe it. He says there’s no way the boy is only 15, and, “we hope that now, in the course of the investigation, we’ll find out his true age.” This is crucial in order to determine whether, in legal terms, Abdul is old enough to be held fully criminally liable, as he would be if already legally an adult. However, if their mental and moral development is deemed to be the equivalent of a child’s, adolescents are often judged according to milder criminal laws relating to young offenders.
While Abdul’s actual age remains unknown, it is well established that many migrants arriving in Europe have claimed to be unaccompanied minors when they were in fact over eighteen, thus avoiding rejection of his claim. Due to his claim to be a cgild Abdul, who came to Germany in 2016 from a country riven by civil war, cannot by law be treated a mature adult. Yet it is absolutely understandable that the girl’s parents may hope he will be punished severely. There is a dimension to what they’ve been through, the suffering they are now experiencing, that goes far beyond other, similar tragedies. Their child fell for someone who came from a completely different culture and had fled from terrible hardship.
The young refugee was motivated to kill the girl when she rejected his love. Affection turned into uncontrollable jealousy, culminating in murder. In perspective the crime shows that people from undeveloped third world countries where cultural values have changes little since the medieval era are never going to integrate into the society of a liberal democracy. The mindset that sees women as property cannot possibly accept the freedom European and American women take for granted.
