Germany Grabs Control Of The EU?

Today Germany has takenm over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. No big deal, Europe watchers among you might well say — the Presidency rotates every six months between the EU’s member states. The Council of the European Union is not the same as the European Council or the Council of Europe (confused? Wait ’til someone tries to explain why the EU has to have three presidents).

So to step daintily out of the mire that is EU politics, Germany’s turn to be the boss is wholly expected, yet in the current circumstances there is something symbolic about this particular rotation — because the the EU’s biggest and most economically popwerful member is now dominant in all branches of the EU’s opaque administration. Ursula von der Leyen, a protege of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s and former member of Merkel’s government, has the top job: President of the European Commission. In formal terms, she’s the first German in the post since the 1960s. Another Merkel disciple, Martin Selmayr, is General Secretary (i.e. CEO) of the commission. David Sassoli, the Italian president of the European Parliament was put in his position by the support of the European Parliament’s largest grouping, The European People’s Party, which is dominate by the German CDO, Angela Merkel’s party, although Hausfrau Volksfuhrer Merkel does not lead now after a number of election setbacks. In effect Sassoli was Merkel’s preferred candidate.

The presidency of The Council Of Europe (did I mention this is not the same thing as the Council of The European Union?) also passes to each member state in turn and need not concern us unless the turn of the pariah among European leaders, Hungary’s Victor Orban is due soon.

Von der Leyen got the European Commission job because she was the nominee of  European People’s Party (i.e. Chancellor Merkel’s anointed candidate). Ironically, the European people were given no direct say in her elevation; but she had her old boss’s backing, which is what counts.

The reality of the EU can no longer be denied. It is not a union of 27 nations. It is Germany plus 26 satellite states. Even the European Federal Superstate idealists  can no longer credibly deny the evidence.

Merkel, though born in Hamburg, grew up and was educated under the brutally authoritarian communist regime of East Germany. Indoctrinated with Marxist ideology from an early age, she would have us believe she underwent a Damascene conversion to Western Democratic values as the notorious wall fell? Or is she an unrepentant, authoritarian, dogmatic, control freak, poisoned by her upbringing ?

For example how did the German Emissions Scandal/Dieselgate, one of the most sensational frauds in History, take place on her Watch? Were she and her government completely unaware that Germany’s world beating car makers had been conspiring to deceive the the world and pass off the dirtiest fuel available as the cleanest?

Perhaps we should give her the benefit of the doubt, but regardless, it has blown the concept of the Good German, so assiduously nurtured since 1955, clean out of the water. Germany is off on another master race trip as a friend of my family who had worked extensively in Germany predicted in the 1960s they would. Europe is facing a terrible dilemma, as it witnesses the emergence of the nascent Fourth Reich.

What will be interesting now is how the relationship between France and Germany will develop. For decades these nations have collaborated to dominate EU policy and ensure Britain was marginalised. The Germans have always wanted to run Europe and dominating the EU is clearly better than sending jack booted troops in to capital cities.

France does not want to run Europe so long as it is run in a way that does not inconvenience France. To date the Germans have been happy to let France do whatever it likes regardless of any EU rules which might get in the way. But the French will not be happy about ceding control to Germany.

The weaker member states used to look to UK to be the thorn in the side of the Franco – German nexus and lament us leaving them totally at its mercy now. The Germans were upset with us leaving as we were a net contributor to the budget and without us that who else will help bail out southern Europe’s economic basket cases. Chancellor Merkel might gamble on control being worth that price but German taxpayer’s are not, and with Merkel’s coalition government having no majority in the Bundestag, the Chancellor and her party are vulnerable in any crisis.

With the Coronavirus crisis piling on the agony, and the Eurozone economy, already in crisis before the pandemic hit, it is only a matter of time before the house of cards collapses in on itself. The more political and economic distance between UK and the EU when that happens the better. Boris had better stick to his promise of no extension to the transition period and get us out at the earliest possible moment.
