Banning Trump Could Create Big Problems For Big Tech

Any attack or perceived attack on Free Speech is always going to cause problems, because shutting down dissenting opinions and criticism of authority is a necessary first step on the path to tyranny. Thus after seeing left wing social media sites like Facebook and Twitter suspend Donald Trump, after their members, unchecked by moderrators and site managers, calling Trump a tyrant, a dictator and a fascist, there is a wry irony in their now behaving like facist bully boys to silence opposition to their Cultural Marxist agenda. The legal position is fine, despite their claims to be free – speech supporting platforms both are private companies and as such are within their rights in deciding who is allowed to use their systems and what those people may and may not publish. For years however, both Facebook and Twitter have tolerated “hate speech,” terrorist activity and incitement to violence (against conservatives, while using the excuse that they are not publishers but platform providers to excuse their lack of action to remove a lot of absolutely vile, and in many cases downright criminal content posted on their “platforms.”

Critics of the social media giants have tried unsuccessfully to claim that the moment the companies start to censor content sympathetic to conservative and libertarian shades of opinion and to shut down the accounts of people who post such content, they admit that they are not platform providers but publishers, editorial policy is applied which makes the site owner legally responsible for the shite that appears on their web pages.

Same rules apply in the case this week of Amazon Web Services decision to remove Parler – a self-described ‘unbiased’ social media platform – from its servers. Parler has gained a reputation as a right wing site, which is rather unfair when we consider that lefties, the kind of people who form hate mobs to attack any contributor who questions the ‘woke’ agenda of the left on Facebook and Twitter, will not use a site that allows conservatives and Christian fundamentalist equal rights to post their opinions. The Amazon decision on Parler was reportedly prompted by pressure from Amazon’s ‘woke’ employees, though the fact that the site was simultaneously kicked off Google’s app store and Apple’s sites suggest the decision was reached by groupthink among members of the Silicon Valley billionaire cunt’s club who were scared that the upstart rival was becoming too successful.

The official reason offered for effectively destroying Parler’s business was its refusal to remove ‘egregious content’. As with Facebook and Twitter, Google and Apple are perfectly within their rights to select what apps will and will not be hosted. But what goes around comes around and this kind of authoritarianism and abuse of power does tend to come back and bite the abusers on the arse.

At a time when the developed nations, and especially the USA, are deeply divided socially and politically, coming on top of yet another pathetically vengeful and vindictive attempt by the Democrats to impeach Donald Trump, the president’s social media ban has only inflamed tensions further, even though this latest politically motivated stunt is almost certainy doomed to fail. Republican senators and the American Civil Liberties Union are unhappy at the decision to suspend Trump while Democrats in congress and the fascistic liberals in the media want to see him lynched on Capitol Hill. But while these voices are screaming the most loudly, there is not unanimous support on the left for attempts to take revenge on Trump. Self-styled socialist and Bernie Sanders supporter Emily Ratajkowski has slammed the decision as one that could put left-wing groups at risk of being banned in the future because the more politically literate leftiest are aware that the Silicon Valley virtue signallers will only be socialist sympathisers so long as it serves their interests to do so.

For Big Tech, the suspension of Trump – and taking down Parler – raises three issues.

By stretching their self – appointed role as official censor to the banning of a world leader, the president of the United States, Twitter and Facebook have given the green light to extremist groups like Antifa and Black Lives Matter to ramp up the pressure on their platforms to ban ALL conservative members and indeed any contributor who expresses dissent from the ‘woke’ agenda.

The Social Media giants have tried to justify Trump’s indefinite suspension, by saying it is necessary due to fears that he will use the platform to incite further violence but in this the double standards and hypocrisy we have come to expect from the left is revealed. Why are posts and tweets calling for the extermination of all straight, white men allowed to stand, why are posts inciting the murder of “white supremacists” or people who oppose the transgender idiocy not removed and the people who post them removed from the site? Why is a tweet from Iran’s Supreme Leader encouraging the eradication of Israel still doing the rounds? If Trump’s egregious tweets from the last few days have really set a new standard, surely Twitter will also suspend Ali Khamenei and all these ‘liberals’ who use the platform to incite violence against anybody who does not share their extremist, authoritarian world view from the platform now? Why is questioning the transgender agenda wrong but hatred of Donald Trump and his supporters acceptable and even acclaimed as praiseworthy.

Twitter and Facebook may be within their rights to do this, but the more it deletes content and suspends accounts due to the disapproval of leftist members, the more it gives the impression that incitements to violence by leftist groups against conservatives have de-facto approval from the platform. And that makes the companies more vulnerable to being santioned or even broken up by a a future incoming government of a more right wing or centerist complexion than Nancy Pelosi’s neo-Maoist Democrats
