Another Tesla Spontaneously Combusts, Killing Driver

When it rains, it pours, or in the case of Tesla, it spontaneously combusts.

Less than a week after a Tesla Model S erupted in flames following a “horrific” crash in Ft. Lauderdale, Flordia,, fatally trapping the two teenagers who died inside, in a similar accident to one that happened in Mountain View, California, last December, while a second Model S rammed a stopped Salt Lake City firetruck at 60mph, mercifully without any fatalities, the Swiss tio.ch reports that yet another Tesla has burst into flames after crashing on the A2 highway near Bellinzona, killing the 48-year-old German driver who, like the Florida ten nagers, was trapped inside because flames spread too quickly after the collision to permit escape or any rescue attempt.

Tesla crash in Switzerland, note the total destruction of the car

According to the Swiss publication, the 48-year-old German driver, from Baden-Wurtermberg, lost control of the vehicle a few meters after the Monte Ceneri tunnel, crashing into the central guardrail, an accident that was remarkably similar to an October 2017 crash in Austria, in which a Model S also burned down, however without any fatalities.

The car then overturned and caught fire, fatally trapping the driver.

According to the Facebook page of the Bellinzona fire department, the flames were once again started by the lithium-ion batteries after the crash. The Fire department explains that “the violent impact of Lithium Ion Batteries could probably have caused a phenomenon called “thermal runaway”, i.e, a rapid and unstoppable increase in temperature (think in terms of a reactor core meltdown in a nuclear power station.).” It is becoming clear that the lithium ion batters used in electric cars are a highly unstable power source.

It’s unclear if the car had its autopilot engaged at the moment of the crash, although now that both the NTSB and NHTSA are looking into last week’s tragic Tesla crash which killed two teenage boys under similar circumstances, we are confident the answer will be available soon. Several Tesla accidents have involved the car going out of control while autopilot was driving. This spate of accidents, along with others in self driving cars from other manufacturers is probably a bigger setback for the autonomous car nerds than electric vehicles in general

As was reported yesterday, Max Schwall, the Tesla exec who until last week had been Tesla’s “primary technical contact” with both the NTSB & NHTSA, resigned quietly and moved to Tesla’s competitor Waymo. Commenting on this departure, we wondered if it suggests that the “company’s troubles with government regulators may be set to escalate.”

Judging by the trio of crashes in just one week, two of which fatal, it’s a safe bet the answer is “yes.” This leaves Elon Musk’s dreams of world domination, like his cars in the crash scene pictures, in total meltdown.

Electric Cars Too Expensive
Yesterday we highlighted the reasistic journey ranges achieved by the much acclaimed but basically useless Chevvy Volt. Today we read this story from one of the car industry’s giants. More Trouble For Tesla – It’s Official This Time

Those who hailed Tesla founder Elon Musk as the New Messiah, the technological miracle worker who was going to be saviour of the planet will be crying into their vegan corn flakes this morning as Tesla’s woes multiply.

Only  day after two teens tesla20s20crash20floridawere killed in a “horrific” Model S crash in Fort. Lauderdale, Florida, when the two 18-year-olds were immolated after being trapped in their burning vehicles, the USA’s National Transport Safety Board, alarmed perhaps that this is the latest in a series on incidents in which Tesla cars displayed their tendency to spontaneously combust, has launched an investigation into the incident.

The probe comes two months after Tesla and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board were at loggerheads over the board’s investigation into a deadly, March 23 crash in Mountain View, California  involving a Tesla vehicle on Autopilot, will be mainly focused on “electric vehicle battery fire” as Elektrek reports that batteries from the other crash under investigation reignited days after the accident.

The NTSB issued a statement announcing their investigation into the crash. NTSB Chairman Robert S. Sumwalt, on whom Elon Musk recently hung up, commented:

“NTSB has a long history of investigating emerging transportation technologies, such as lithium ion battery fires in commercial aviation, as well as a fire involving the lithium ion battery in a Chevrolet Volt in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  In addition, the NTSB is currently investigating a fire involving the transportation of hydrogen gas for fuel cell vehicles. The goal of these investigations is to understand the impact of these emerging transportation technologies when they are part of a transportation accident.”

The NTSB sent 4 investigators to Florida and will “primarily focus on electric vehicle battery fire, including fire department activities and towing operations.”

The second Tesla safety probe this year comes on the back of news that the Mountain View Fire Department shared its report about the aftermath of the fatal Tesla Model X accident in Mountain View with other fire departments, which indicates they suspect serious problems with Tesla cars.  That is now also under NTSB investigation.

In the report (published via KTVU), the fire department said that they monitored the battery pack and it reignited days after the March 23 accident, with Mountain View Fire Chief Juan Diaz commenting:

“In this particular case, six days later, the temperature inside those cells increased to the point of ignition. That’s why the car reignited. You have stored energy that is frankly unstable.

Think of a nuclear meltdown in which the plutonium rods spontaneously combust over and over as there is no way to cool them sufficiently. It’s kinda like that.”

Amusingly, Tesla recommends using “large amounts of water” to extinguish a battery fire in its vehicles (water is not recommenedd for extinguishing electrical fires) and using a thermal imaging camera to monitor the battery for at least one hour after it is found to be completely cooled:

“If the high voltage battery catches fire, is exposed to high heat, or is bent, twisted, cracked, or breached in any way, use large amounts of water to cool the battery. DO NOT extinguish with a small amount of water. Always establish or request an additional water supply.”

More appropriately, the company also offers online training for fire departments about what steps to take when dealing with its vehicles after a crash. Effing long ones, we would guess.

A Cheaper Alternative To Car Insurance?

An estimated one million Russian motorists have installed dash cams in their cars. Some of them captured the 10-ton meteor that exploded in atmosphere last week, but the the cameras are mainly installed for just one reason: ensuring justice when it comes to proving accidents on the roads.

Last year, Al Jazeera spoke with motorists who never drive without their cameras. One driver said he and many others believe that police officers are only on the roads to take bribes, bending traffic laws—or ignoring them completely—to benefit themselves. A camera will save you from false accusations.

“In Russia, everyone should have a camera on their dashboard. It’s better than keeping a lead pipe under your seat for protection,” writes Marina Galperina, a New York-based blogger who hails from Russia.

According to Galperina, hit and runs are “very common,” and insurance companies have begun to crack down on claims, often denying any claim with little evidence. Witnesses aren’t much help, either; Russian courts have turned into a he-said-she-said mess when it comes to traffic accidents. “Dash-cam footage is the only real way to substantiate your claims in the court of law,” Galperina writes.

Because of lax law enforcement and scams on the road, including staged crashes and already damaged cars presented as evidence in a new case, buying a fully comp policy is outrageously expensive. The camera technology —ranging from as little as $50 to as much as $200 — and third party only is much cheaper than comprehensive insurance.

Thinking about my annual premium this looks like an idea we should be thinking about in Britain.

Greater Love Hath No Man Than He Forgives The Chap Who Cut His Willy Off…..

Quite nostalgic to start the week off with a willy story, not seen one in ages, but hopefully they will be like buses and we should have a glut of them coming up soon.

Zaprian Lozanov and Lyubomir Todanov had spent the day in each other’s company getting a bit rat-arsed, as you do.

But when Lyubomir got out his samurai sword to show off his prowess with the weapon Zaprian became a bit concerned.

Deciding Lyubomir’s antics were an accident waiting to happen he stepped towards his friend with the intention of disarming him.
Unfortunately at that precise moment Lyubomir brought the sword round in front of Zaprian with the result that he accidently sliced off Zaprian’s willy.

Not one to hold a grudge over what was obviously an accident Zaprian campaigned for his friend’s release…
so he could get a job and start paying the compeensation to which Zaprian feels he is due!

Stupid Idea Of The Week: The Child Illusion.

Boggart Blog like to give out awards. People think we are bad tempered, curmudgeonluy piss takers who can see no good in anything but they could not be more wrong. We always like to give credit where its due. An example of this is our Stupid Criminal Of The Week Award which we have not been able to award for several weeks because no criminals stupid enough have come to our attention.

No worries, we are delighted to announce the inaugural Boggart Blog Most Gobsmakingly Stupid Idea Of The Week Award. The first award in this series goes to the municipal traffic engineers in Vancouver B.C. for this:

Drivers near 22nd street in West Vancouver will be confronted with what seems like a young girl running after a ball in front of their vehicle. In reality, it’s a decal on the pavement that looks like a real person. Signage near the 3D image reads “You’re probably not expecting kids to run out on the road.”

No. And we’re not expecting stupid cunts to trick us into thinking a kid has run out into the road either.

OK so this trick is great the first day, it causes many multiple pile ups as drivers brake hard to avoid the child. There is blood, there are deaths and serious injuries. Then word spreads through group e-mails, blogs, tweets, local TV and Radio news etc.

Next day everyone knows its an optical illusion and drives past without slowing down.

And they next time a kid runs into the road in front of one of those drivers they think, “Oh, it only one of those stupid optical illusion things” and splat.

Municipal authority of Vancouver you we give you this golden fuckwit statuette for your self importance, stupidity and total lack of the ability to think things through.

Open Season On Cyclists

Best news from the coalition government so far is the announcement that speed cameras are to be scrapped.

“Why is this good news?” road safety fans will ask, “does Boggart Blog approve of the carnage on our roads?”

Well, if there was carnage on our roads we wouldn’t but British roads are the safest in Europe. Speed kills, the road safety whiners will whine, doing what people who claim they are logical and scientific always do and resorting to emotive and sentimental hand wringing when someone points out their statistics are made up. The truth is bad driving kills. Keep handing out driving licences to semi literate morons and people will continue to die. But what is responsible for more deaths on the road than bad driving is stupidity.

Speed does not kill. I have only had two accidents in a forty year driving career. My car was standing still and the cars that hit me were travelling well below the speed limit in each. I only remember fatsally having one accident serious enough to warrant an insurance claim and her car was stationary at the time. Statistical proof then that the slower you are going the more danger you are in.

What wound me up about this is an article on The Guardian website today by environmentalist George Monbiot, one of those cyclists who pedals around wearing a stupid helmet that make him look like a penguin that got stuck in reverse. George does not like speed which is OK because he lives in rural Wales where there is nowhere to go and fuck all to do when you get there.

Now I usually like George even when I disagree with him. He’s a stylish writer and presents his arguments well. Except when he starts going on about how unsafe cars are. Because cars are not unsafe, it’s all the other shit they let on the roads that is not safe.

Cyclists are not safe, they put on their reverse penguin helmets oblivious to the fact these items are fitted with an electronic chip that overrides their brain signals, switches off their self preservation instinct and makes them think they can carve up Range Rovers, White Vans and everything else and be safe because when a pedestrian or cyclist gets hurt it is always the car driver’s fault.

WRONG! The car drier may get a fine or a ban or a community service order but that is not going to restore the life of some imbecile who thought his moral superiority and love of the planet immunised him against the effects of being hit by a ton and a half of metal travelling at twenty five miles an hour.

And pedestrians, they are a bigger hazard to other road users than any car, even a souped up hot hatch driven by an underage joy rider. Why? Because pedestrians are imbeciles, that’s why. They are too stupid to be allowed anywhere near roads. If they had even minimal intelligence they would be driving cars.

Skateboarders. Who let them out on roads with no brakes or steeting controls? They should be locked up in padded cells with their skateboarders rammed up their arses. There’s a park in Accrington where if the skateboarders set off from the top end just as traffic lights change a few hundred yards away on the main road a string of them will explode from the park gates and shoot across the road just before the first car gets there. Unless of course the first car is a souped up hot hatch driven by an underage joyrider.

Not long ago the excellent Anna Raccoon featured a video some New Zealand suicide skateboarders (video and article) had made of themselves skateboarding down the motorway, swooping in and out of streams of traffic and acting like arseholes skateboarders. It was going viral on the web at the time so you can bet its only a matter of time before our arrested adolescent knobhead army are having a go. And whose fault will it be when one of the silly little fuckers gets mashed. The car driver’s of course.

George Monbiot cites the safety of children in his hand wringing whine against people who have lives to get on with. They always bring children into it, these people who claim they are so logical, so rational, so scientific.

They want science. OK, Darwinian evolution. We used to teach our kids road safety, the Green Gross Code Man, Darth Vader before he went over to the dark side, would remind kids to look both ways and make sure the road was clear and it was safe to cross. Politically Correct Thinking put a stop to than. Teaching kids to cross roads safely imposed the repressive rules of bourgeois society on the little darlings preventing their ability to express their creativity from developing freely. And anyway the Green Cross Code man looked like a paedophile.

Let’s put light controlled crossings everywhere, said the handwringers, and get drivers well wound up because kids press the button and then run off and traffic has to stop at the red light even though there is nobody waiting to cross.

Where there is no light to help them cross safely of course kids just run out into the road because nobody taught them any diffrent. So to protect the little darlings from their own stupidity we get speed limits an old lady on a mobility scooter would be in danger of breaking, exhaust wrecking bumps everywhere and kids who think nothing can ever harm them. Suddenly survival of the fittest does not work any more because the handwringers are protecting all the little arseholes who we really do not want contributing to the gene pool

Still, in the eyes of the politically correct thought police the only thing children need to know about road safety is, “If you get mashed it is always the car driver’s fault.”

If we are serious about road safety here’s what we need to do. Raise speed limits because I have proved the slower you go the more at risk you are, ban cyclists, pedestrians and people who obey speed limits because anyone who cannot think for themself should not be driving, abolish children, kill all skateboarders; not because I hate them or they are evil or dangerous people but because it’s to only humane thing to do.

George Monbiot – Evidence Of The War Involving Motorists
