Take Extra Care Through Roadworks

Circumstances having dictated that I have spent the best part of the last two weeks hurtling between the White Rose County and the Red Rose County across the M62 I have once again been able to enjoy the words of wisdom on the dot matrix signs.

“Junction 20 Rochdale
27miles 24 minutes
Come On If You Think You Are Hard Enough”

Ha! 19 minutes mate. Stick that up your dot matrix and smoke it.

But this entertaining art form continues to evolve.

On my first journey on a Saturday I came across a sign displaying the message:

“TAKE EXTRA CARE THROUGH ROADWORKS”

Fair enough, anticipating said roadworks everybody reduced their speed to not that far above the speed limit.
But…no roadworks.
A few cones on the verge but no roadworks, no machinery, no workers, no lane closures, nothing.

Ah I thought, they’ve taken the roadworks down for the weekend (You know what I mean), but forgot to turn off the sign.

However returning that same evening the same message was displayed on the eastbound carriageway.

Shuttling back westwards the following Monday the same sign, the same lack of roadworks, the same cones sitting idly on the verge.

I began to wonder.

Heading back into Yorks on the Tuesday I was avidly searching for the sign and sure enough there it was.

“TAKE EXTRA CARE THROUGH ROADWORKS”

No mention of roadworks in 1 mile, say, or roadworks commencing on the 10th Feb.

Perhaps it wasn’t meant to indicate an upcoming problem.
Perhaps it was just general advice.

DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE

WATCH YOUR SPEED

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE

All just general guidelines for safe driving so why not

TAKE EXTRA CARE THROUGH ROADWORKS ?

I awaited the next development in this signage with bated breath, however I was disappointed to see, as I made my way westward yesterday, that the message was still the same.
A golden opportunity missed here, Dept of Transport.
Surely after nearly a fortnight they should be thinking of changing the message. So Boggartblog has come up with some suggestions to keep us motorists on our toes.

“WHY NOT LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME AND TAKE THE BUS INSTEAD”

“A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE”

“PUT YOUR BRAIN INTO GEAR BEFORE ENGAGING YOUR MOUTH”

“A PROBLEM SHARED IS A PROBLEM HALVED”

“A WISE MAN NEVER TRUSTS A BANKER”

” ‘A ONE EYED SCOTTISH IDIOT’ IS NO MAN TO RUN A COUNTRY”

“DON’T FORGET! SATURDAY IS VALENTINE’S DAY. FLOWERS AND CHOCS AT NEXT SERVICES – 3 MILES”
