So the Large Hadron Collider worried you. You were quite right too, some scientists have now recalculated the data and find it is a lot more dangerous than they thought. Scientists Now Not So Sure The Doomsday Machine Will Not Swallow The World Well OK I know its only Fox News but we have to get our posts where we can.
The first thing to understand is there is no more hard scientific evidence for The Big Bang than for the Book Of Genesis. I don’t believe either but I’m one of those people who does not feel a need to explain to myself how the Universe began. Once I was not here and I didn’t give a damn about what was going on. One day I will not be here and what is going on will not concern me. So why worry, I’m enjoying myself for now.
Big Bang is a scientific necessity, a point zero from which time and distance can be measured. Because the Big Bang Theory was created to meet Einstein’s need to make his equations work it is in fact as much myth as any of the creation myths of ancient and modern religion, as much an illusion as a magician pulling a white rabbit out of a hat. Scince is sexier than magic though, Einstein allegely boffed Marilyn Monroe, Paul Daniels had to settle for Debbie Magee.
The real aim of the Large Hardon Provider apart from giving scientists a cheap thrill is to find an inexhaustible source of clean, free power. Peter Higgs theory proposes the boson, a sub atomic particle, is the source of the binding energy that in our physical dimension gives matter its mass.
As I understand it Higgs theory goes that a boson, a patricle of such slight mass itself as to be virtually undetectable like the nutrinos that bombard us constantly (look out, there’s one coming you way now… oh no, my warning was too late, it smashed right through your brain…are you OK?) We all have hundreds of nutrinos an hour ripping right through our body tissue and never notice. They are bundles of energy that have hardly any mass and about as much substance as Gordon Brown’s economic stimulus.
Higgs theorized that as energy is a wave, the waves from the boson travel indefinitely through space from the source. Thus, because of the boson, each atom is almost as big as the Universe itself. Bizarrely this idea has echoes in The Bible and the Hindu Rig Veda which expresses it like this: Brahman (God) is so great the whole Universe is contained within it and yet so small its whole is contained withing the smallest thing. Telling a scientist that is like fixing a piece of bacon to a puppy’s tail, Only a bastard would do it. Last time I told a buch of scientists their cutting edge theory was nicked from the oldest holy book in the world half of them had breakdowns – a bit like the collider really.
The obvious flaw in the idea that capturing Bosons could provide energy to run our light bulbs, televisions and Corby Trouser Presses is that nobody can know what would happen if we start sucking that enegy away from the job it might be doing if Higgs is right. You know, holding stuff together…
Everything might start falling apart.
Actually nobody knows what would happen if anybody used a Corby Trouser Press as nobody has ever used one. I thought of using one to warm up a pie once but it was not suitable.
So the LHC is yet another example of how scientists get carried away with an idea and don’t really think through the consequences.
Like the mysterious theoretical force of Higgs theory, gravity and magnetism have so far defied scientific explanation. It would perhaps be better if scientists just stuck to the reply Edison gave when asked to explain electricity.
“It works,” he said. So far for all the millions of hours expended on study nobody has improved on that.
For the curious here is a site where a number of flaws in scientific thinking are exposed by applying common sense to the assumptions of Einstein and others and daring to mention the contradictions in the laws of physics.

And some more examples of aplying common sense when assessing scientific theory…
