Big Bang theory wrong? Star older than Universe discovered

from The Daily Express

The Universe is thought to have popped into existence some 13.8 billion years ago when an infinitesimal point expanded billions of lightyears across in just a fraction of a second. The Big Bang theory has stood for the best part of 100 years after Belgian physicist Georges Lemaître first proposed in 1927 the expansion of the Universe could be traced back to a single point. However, the well-accepted model is now under the microscope after a team of researchers found a star which appears to be older than the cosmos.

A star know as “Methuselah star”, or scientifically called HD 140283, is situated about 200 million lightyears away and has stumped experts. Analysis of the star showed that it contained very little iron content, which would suggest that it formed during a period when the iron element was not abundant in the Universe. This in turn led to the discovery the star is 14.5 billion years old, some 0.7 billion years older than the Universe.

Experts met at a conference in California in July in an attempt to solve the mystery, but so far questions have just led to more questions – and it could lead to a “scientific revolution”.

Sciencetits Prove Their Colleagues Are Liars (new evidence to support big bang theory revealed)

from BBC News:

Scientists say they have extraordinary new evidence to support a Big Bang Theory for the origin of the Universe.

Researchers believe they have found the signal left in the sky by the super-rapid expansion of space that must have occurred just fractions of a second after everything came into being.

It takes the form of a distinctive twist in the oldest light detectable with telescopes. Read more:

The findings will be analyzed carefully, but already there is talk of Nobel prizes. (What! I thought scientists were above speculating and jumping to wild conclusions – wouldn’t it be best to wait and see if it is bullshit?)

“This is spectacular,” commented Prof Marc Kamionkowski, from Johns Hopkins University.

“I’ve seen the research; the arguments are persuasive, and the scientists involved are among the most careful and conservative people I know,” he told BBC News (sic).

The breakthrough was announced by an American team working on a project known as BICEP2.

This has been using a telescope at the South Pole to make detailed observations of a small patch of sky.

The aim has been to try to find a residual marker for “inflation” – the idea that the cosmos experienced an exponential growth spurt in its first trillionth, of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second, i.e. it grew from the size of a gnat fart to the size of a marble. Scientists have never been troubled overmuch by reality.

Now I don’t know what you make of this but when I heard a headline on BBC TV News that said, “Big Bang Theory Was Always Just That – A Theory. Until Now” before going into this story, I thought, “Now hang on a minute, how many times have I argued with First Church Of Scientism disciples in my threads that Big Bang is a theory while they insisted that Big Bang had been proved beyond doubt and if I refused to believe it that proved I’m a young earth creationist.

And now I find it was a theory all along. And still is – take a look at the language of this latest “proof” (which is actually nothing more than another batch of subjective interpretations of data).

“Researchers believe”;”the evidence is persuasive”;

In other words Bayesean inference played a big part in helping these people see in their data the answer they most wanted to see.

Now follow the link above and read the POS in the press release to gain some scientific understanding that what this is really all about is blinding everyone by throwing pseudoscientific bullshit in our faces in order to keep the research grants flowing. They have found theoretical proof of one of the theories that is cited as proof of some of Albert Einstein’s theories (who was honest enough to recognise that his “thought experiments were just that). as I said scientists have never been troubled overmuch by reality.

What really motivates scientists of course is the fear that one day the world will catch on to what a lying, cheating bunch of con artists they are, and instead of being handed shitloads of cash for sitting around university faculties wanking all day they will have to go out into the real world and get some honest work done.

Scientists Now Not So Sure About Safety Of The Large Hardon Provider

So the Large Hadron Collider worried you. You were quite right too, some scientists have now recalculated the data and find it is a lot more dangerous than they thought. Scientists Now Not So Sure The Doomsday Machine Will Not Swallow The World Well OK I know its only Fox News but we have to get our posts where we can.

The first thing to understand is there is no more hard scientific evidence for The Big Bang than for the Book Of Genesis. I don’t believe either but I’m one of those people who does not feel a need to explain to myself how the Universe began. Once I was not here and I didn’t give a damn about what was going on. One day I will not be here and what is going on will not concern me. So why worry, I’m enjoying myself for now.

Big Bang is a scientific necessity, a point zero from which time and distance can be measured. Because the Big Bang Theory was created to meet Einstein’s need to make his equations work it is in fact as much myth as any of the creation myths of ancient and modern religion, as much an illusion as a magician pulling a white rabbit out of a hat. Scince is sexier than magic though, Einstein allegely boffed Marilyn Monroe, Paul Daniels had to settle for Debbie Magee.

The real aim of the Large Hardon Provider apart from giving scientists a cheap thrill is to find an inexhaustible source of clean, free power. Peter Higgs theory proposes the boson, a sub atomic particle, is the source of the binding energy that in our physical dimension gives matter its mass.

As I understand it Higgs theory goes that a boson, a patricle of such slight mass itself as to be virtually undetectable like the nutrinos that bombard us constantly (look out, there’s one coming you way now… oh no, my warning was too late, it smashed right through your brain…are you OK?) We all have hundreds of nutrinos an hour ripping right through our body tissue and never notice. They are bundles of energy that have hardly any mass and about as much substance as Gordon Brown’s economic stimulus.

Higgs theorized that as energy is a wave, the waves from the boson travel indefinitely through space from the source. Thus, because of the boson, each atom is almost as big as the Universe itself. Bizarrely this idea has echoes in The Bible and the Hindu Rig Veda which expresses it like this: Brahman (God) is so great the whole Universe is contained within it and yet so small its whole is contained withing the smallest thing. Telling a scientist that is like fixing a piece of bacon to a puppy’s tail, Only a bastard would do it. Last time I told a buch of scientists their cutting edge theory was nicked from the oldest holy book in the world half of them had breakdowns – a bit like the collider really.

The obvious flaw in the idea that capturing Bosons could provide energy to run our light bulbs, televisions and Corby Trouser Presses is that nobody can know what would happen if we start sucking that enegy away from the job it might be doing if Higgs is right. You know, holding stuff together…

Everything might start falling apart.

Actually nobody knows what would happen if anybody used a Corby Trouser Press as nobody has ever used one. I thought of using one to warm up a pie once but it was not suitable.

So the LHC is yet another example of how scientists get carried away with an idea and don’t really think through the consequences.

Like the mysterious theoretical force of Higgs theory, gravity and magnetism have so far defied scientific explanation. It would perhaps be better if scientists just stuck to the reply Edison gave when asked to explain electricity.
“It works,” he said. So far for all the millions of hours expended on study nobody has improved on that.

For the curious here is a site where a number of flaws in scientific thinking are exposed by applying common sense to the assumptions of Einstein and others and daring to mention the contradictions in the laws of physics.
