Second bomb Attack In Six Months Targets Tourists In Egypt.

News feeds are telling us that earlier today (Sunday) a terror attack was made on a bus full of tourists travelling to see the Pyramids at Giza, near the Cairo, the Egyptian capital. Egyptian official news sources said the blast wounded at least 16 people, with no reports of fatalities so far.

The Egyptian government described the attack as having been by means of a roadside bomb placed on a heavily used stretch of road that in the tourist season is packed with busloads of sightseers en route to the famous World Heritage site, which leads security forces to believe it is the work of Islamic extremists intent on crippling Egypt’s vital tourist trade — the second to target foreign visitors to the pyramids in under six months.

in December an explosion ripped through a tourist bus in Al-Haram area south of Cairo, which killed two and left a dozen injured, in what was the first such attack in two years.

Eye witness reports suggest the bomb was a relatively small explosive device, and photographs of the aftermath show the bus suffered impact damage, but is intact.

According to Bloomberg:

Some of the wounded were foreign nationals, according to Mohammed El-Saghir, head of police investigations in Giza’s al-Haram neighborhood. The blast occurred in front of a museum that’s under construction, and there was not immediate claim of responsibility.

In the hours following the incident, reported numbers of injured people rose to 18, with police saying they’re attempting to track the source, which a number of reports have linked with Islamic militant groups engaged in a long running conflict with Egypt’s security services.

Egypt Mosque Attack Death Toll Hits 235

24 November, 2017

Early today, heavily armed Islamic militants stormed a mosque in Egypt’s northern Sinai Peninsula on Friday, killing at least 235 people and wounding at least 120 others, according to Bloomberg.  In what appears to be the deadliest mass killing in Egypt since the 2013 attack in Rabaa al-Adawiya, where paramilitary militia men who support President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi murdered as many as 900 Islamists who had gathered in the square for a nonviolent sit-in.

The latest assault, west of the town of El-Arish in Sinai, targeted people gathered for Friday prayers, when mosques in Egypt often overflow with worshipers. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Yet Sinai province, which lies to the east of the Nile delta and borders southern Israel and the Gaza Strip, has been a key battleground in the government’s struggle against a local branch of Islamic State.

As the BBC   has reported, Northern Sinai has been living under a media blackout for several years. No media organisations, including state-sponsored media, have been allowed to report from there.

While the majority of Islamist activity has been confined to the northern part of the Sinai, the violence has occasionally spilled over to Cairo and other main cities. Meanwhile, attacks against Egypt’s Coptic Christian minority have killed dozens.

Al-Arabiya and other local sources said some of the worshippers were Sufis. Islamic State regards them as apostates because they revere saints and shrines, which hardliners believe is tantamount to heresy.

While the bombings aren’t seen as threatening the stability of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s government, they’ve devastated the tourist industry, a vital pillar of the economy, according to Bloomberg. El-Sisi called a meeting with the security committee following the mass killing, according to the state-run television said.

El-Sisi has declared three days of mourning, according to Shorouk News. State TV reports five militants were involved in the attack.

Is World War Three Really Kicking Off This Time?
The airstrikes by a US led coalition that killed many Syrian soldiers fighting for the legitimate government of Bashar al Assad against the terrorist forces of ISIS has raised the level of hostile rhetoric between the USA / NATO coalition and the Russia / China / Iran alliance. The likelihood of war seemed to have receded through the summer, after it seemed possible early this year, that one stray shell or bullet could spread the war beyond the middle east.

More Than ISIS, Iraq’s Sunni Insurgency
The story emerging in Iraq is of another American foreign policy fuck up, a total misreading of the situation by the world’s most parochial global power. When Will Egypt Get True Democracy

Egypt, liberated from decades of tyranny last March held it’s first democratic elections for decades last weekend. The result will not be known for some time and predictions of how the new parliament will be made up vary wildly.

The new parliament’s primary task will be to pick a 100-strong constituent assembly to write the new constitution. Only elected members of both houses will get to pick the assembly’s members. Parliament will have legislative power, but the military council, which took over from Mubarak, will keep its “presidential powers” until a presidential election, now expected in June, 2012.

The military council will still appoint the government.

What, this is an outrage. Whay aren’t Cammers, Obama and the rest protesting about this. If the western nations are really committed to ensuring human rights are respected globally, Egyptians must surely be entitled to true democracy like that introduced in Italy and Greece recently, with elections being overruled and governments appointed from the ranks of Brussels Bureaucrats.

Oh erm … … … I’ll get me coat.

News Fatigue or WGAF Syndrome

Do you ever get news fatigue. This occurs when you know a story is important, life changing even, and yet the saturation news coverage on television, radio and the internet somewhow manages to trivialise it.

I’m afraid I am suffering from acute news fatigue this week.

A week ago every time I watched the news on TV or heard and update on radio I was thinking, “That’s a terrible situation in Egypt, apart from the people dying in the violence many many more will suffer long term through loss of jobs, destruction of businesses, looting or crops being ruined. Such an important place historically too, crade of civilisation and all that. We can only hope all the heritage sites and priceless artefacts survive. And because the middle east is a politically unstable region at the best of times, Egypt’s political meltdown poses a threat to world peace. Oil prices will rocket, rampant inflation could be set off and a regional war break out.”

By Monday I was thinking, “Not Egypt again, I know the situation there is serious but hit happens. We all know about it now, is there nothing else going on in the world.

By today my news fatigue had progressed to its final, most serious stage; WGAF syndrome. As the news came on TV I said to Mrs T. “Not Egypt again, who gives a fuck,” and switched off.

Television news bulletins yesterdays were bringing us news of the collapse of authortarian government in Egypt and the rioting and looting that always go with such events.

Reporters speaking in their best ‘this is the end of civilisation as we know it’ voices were reporting that Egypt’s famous museums were being looted and priceless aretfacts from one of the world’s earliest civilisations.

And inbetween programmes one of the niche channels was trailering a documentary titled, “The Disappearing Sphinx.”
