Smoke, Drink And Eat Whatever You Want: Norway’s Public Health Minister

11 May 2019

For years we have been lectured and harangued by the bansturbators, (that is, the people who get off on stopping us doing things that give us pleasure,) their fingers wagging furiously in our faces as they tell us smoking will kill us, even looking at an alcpholic drink will destroy our livrers, a pinch of salt will cause heart attacks, strokes and acute asplaxification of the nurdlers, a cream cake or two will make us obese, a steak dinner or a burger will give us cancer, and driving our cars will destroy the planet. So it was a pleasure to come across a news item about a politician who believes adults can be trusted to behave sensibly and left make their own choices in life.

Norway’s new public health minister, Sylvi Listhaug is such a politician, she believes that adults don’t need the constant lectures and admonishments from government about what they put into their bodies – telling Norway’s state broadcaster NRK that “people should be allowed to smoke, drink and eat as much red meat as they like,” according to a report in the snowflakes favourite journal, the New York Times.

“The government may provide information, but I think people in general know what is healthy and what is not,” she added.

The interview – published a few days into her new role as head of the ministry, was “dotted with the kind of sharp, controversial comments Ms. Listhaug, deputy leader of the right-wing, anti-immigration Progress Party, is known for,” reports the Times – which promptly goes on to disparage the conservative politician for actually believing in individual freedom and personal responsibility, two of the basic principles of real liberalism, (we all know people who ‘identify’ as liberals do so only because hir sounds cuddlier and less threaening that if they were honest and called themselves fascistic authoritarians.

Ms Listhaug is no stranger to controversy, as immigration minister she made headlines in 2017 with disparaging comments about Sweden, saying that Norway should not become like its neighbor, which was accepting more refugeesnd African despite having experiences a huge rise in crome rates, especiall in sex crimed by middle – eastern a males against European women since abolishing border controls and letting all comers claim residency in the country. Last year, she resigned as justice minister after comments about terrorists
(which were in fact true,)
she made on Facebook threatened to bring down the government.

This week, opposition politicians and health advocates suffered collective apoplexy as they tried to outdo each other in denouncing in the strongest terms Ms. Listhaug’s comments on habits that are hyped as major risk factors for many serious diseases, all of which are big money spinners for Big Pharma

The secretary general of Norway’s Cancer Society, Anne Lise Ryel was shocked by the comments – saying in a statement: “I fear that this will set public health efforts back for decades, and that this will compromise the general understanding among Norwegians of the health consequences of tobacco and alcohol use.” It is notable that a way of preventing cancer (and some maverick doctors say a cure,) has been available since the 1960s but no public health charity or government department in the democratic world is promoting it. Could that be, perhaps, that no expensive drugs, therapies or surgery are involved, only self discipline.

Ryel has called for Listhaug to be removed from her post, adding that “she seems to lack understanding of what public health really means and what her role as minister in that area should be.” Perhaps she understands more than Ryel admits. This publication knows public health is about shovelling taxpayers’ money into Big Pharma’s coffers.

Listhaug stuck to her guns, fireing back in a Friday email to the Times, writing: “The government believes that people have to take responsibility for their own life, but the government has to make sure that everyone can make healthy and informed choices.”

“The number of daily smokers has declined sharply since 2000,” she added. “This confirms that the Norwegian tobacco policy and control strategy works.”

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, in 2017, 11 percent of Norwegians aged 15 or older smoked daily, one of the lowest rates among the group’s 34 member nations. Norway has also had the steepest decrease of any of the countries since 2000, when the equivalent figure was 32 percent.

The Eurosceptoc Progress Party has been a junior partner in Norway’s center-right governing coalition since 2013. Its rise to prominence created unease, coming just two years after a far-right, anti-Muslim extremist who had once belonged to the party killed 77 people in a murderous rampage. It;s rapid rise has accompanied a crime wave in the immigrant communities of Noway’s cities, with turf wars between rival immigrant gangs for control of the drugs and sex trades often erupting into violence on the streeets of the capital city Oslo.

Governments around the world have stepped up campaigns to fight unhealthy habits usually be imposing punitive taxation. France recently told people not to drink every day; a soda tax in Britain has helped lower sugar levels in some drinks, and Australia’s graphic warnings on cigarette packages, considered a success, are being copied in other countries. –New York Times While governments claim success for their authoritarian attacks on personal liberty, the rise in contraband goods smuggled from nations were taxes on tobacco and alcohol are low or zero has risen astronomically and in Europe there have been cases of small factories being set up producing low quality cigarettes made with cheap tobacco in in healthy conditions, which are paked in fake reproductions of leading brand packaging and passed off as the real thing.

Listhaug also said that smokers in Norway are made to feel like “pariahs,” and that she would not be the “moral police” in government – echoing comments made by Austria’s far-right defense of freedom of choice in their oppostion of antismoking legislation.

Listhaug is a former regular smoker who told NRK that she is now just a social smoker.

Macron Isolated After More High Profile Resignations. Pressure Mounts On French President

Macron as Jupiter

On being elected President of France, Emmanuel Macron said he would rule in the style of Roman God Jupiter

On top of the yellow Vests debacle, which is now destabilising France as the anti – government protests continue, a string of high profile resignations from the tottering government of President Emmanuel Macron has prompted Gérard Larcher, leader of the French Senate to warn Macron that his authoritarian tendencies were partly to blame for the civil unrest crisis and political instability that have weakened his presidency.

Mr Macron’s office announced this week that government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux and Digital Affairs Minister Mounir Mahjoubi were leaving the administration, along with European Affairs Minister Nathalie Loiseau. Monsieurs Griveaux and Mahjoubi are said to be planning to launch rival bids for next year’s mayoral election in Paris. The current mayor, Anne Hidalgo, a socialist is seeking re-election.

Mrs Loiseau, was a key player in communicating the French government’s stance on Brexit throughout the unsuccessful negotiations, she will move to head up Mr Macron’s pro-Europe La République en Marche (LREM) party in the May 26 European parliamentary elections.

Mr Griveaux has been government spokesman since November 2017, while Mr Mahjoubi was named digital minister in May 2017. Mrs Loiseau, a career diplomat, joined the Macron government in June 2017. A reshuffle is expected by Monday, the date of the next cabinet meeting, but could be announced early to avoid being bumped down the news bulletins by the coming weekend’s Yellow Vest protests.

In the last eight months, Mr Macron has waved goodbye to his popular ecology minister Nicolas Hulot, ally and interior minister Gérard Collomb, and close advisor Ismaël Emelien.

The latest batch of resignations have further eroded the ceredibility of Macron’s leadership, already undermined by easily supportable claims that he is a president for the rich and the global corporations (The Davosocracy,) and his policies are putting further pressure on low paid and middle income groups in what is now known to be the most highly taxed nation on the planet. The three ministers who quit the government on Wednesday were all assumed to be close allies of Macron. These latest resignations bring the number of cabinet members who have quit since the boy president took office in May 2017 to ten.

“Maybe the [resignations] are a reflection of Mr Macron’s vertical governing style … maybe they reflect the head of state’s growing isolation,” Mr Larcher told Europe 1 radio shortly after the departures were confirmed in an emailed statement.

The spate of ministerial resignations, along with rising living costs, tax increases, immigration and Macron’s push to integrate France more closely politically and economically with germany have all contributed to the discontent that triggered the Yelloiw Vest movement and now has Marcon’s with his political opponents depicting him as an increasingly solitary figure with diminishing popularity and an aura of cluelessness.

Ghosts Of ’68 Threaten Macron’s Technocratic Dream.

The idealistic hope that mass protests and civil disobedience could trigger real social change met with some success in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but looked to have died after the USA’s 1960s civil rights movement and anti – war protests. The recent mass demonstrations of Frane’s gilets jaunes (yellow vests) movement in 2018, a movement … Continue reading

A Kindly, Old Billionaire’s Advice to Millennials

via Medium.com

In the article, “Langone to Millennials Embracing Socialism: ‘I’ll put you on my plane and fly you to Venezuela,’” the arguments of Ken Langone, CEO of Home Depot, leave out many crucial facts and bring up points that are not very relevant. For example, in the interview, he argues that those who are leaning toward socialism should be forewarned that it is not a good system.

First of all, in our mixed economy, we already have socialist elements in our economy and society?—?our post office, our fire departments, our public school system, our military?—?that actually work better than they would if we were to hand them over to independent capitalists to run. And, we also have capitalist elements that work better as independent, capitalist operations than they would if we were to hand them over to the government or to socialist co-ops to run. Even Senator Bernie Sanders, who is an avowed democratic socialist, has said that he did not believe that “the little store on the corner should be run by the government”;

‘No-deal’ Brexit ferry company trousers £14 million despite having no ships …

3094162_0f2943c8

Ramsgate Ferry Port – not many ships or lorries around, maybe its only used by ghost companies ( Picture: http://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/ )

One of the companies contracted by the government’s Ministry of Brexit Panic to run ferries in the event of a no-deal Brexit does not currently own any ships, has never operated a ferry service or shipping line and is not planning to do so until close to the UK’s scheduled departure date from the European Union, it has emerged.

Concerns have been raised about Seaborne Freight, which despite it’s not being in a position to provide any service was awarded a £13.8m contract to operate freight ferries from Ramsgate to the Belgian port of Ostend if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, after a councillor for the Kent town queried whether it would be possible to set up the new service by the scheduled Brexit date.

There are grounds for looking closely into this company and who benefits from its profits. It would not surprise us if Prime Minister Theresa May and Chancellor Phil (spreadsheet) Hammond are among the main shareholders. Amid all the Project Fear panic about ‘no deal’ nobody is asking why we will need more ships. There will not be any significant increase in cross channel trade after Brexit, in fact the Remainers would like us to believe trade will cease completely.

The seaborne contract is one of three agreements worth a total of £107.7m signed by the government without a tendering process (how dodgy is that?) to help ease “severe congestion” at Dover by securing extra lorry capacity.

Seaborne has published plans to operate freight ferries from Ramsgate from late March, beginning with two ships and increasing to four by the end of the summer. Without any ships this is oing to be quite difficult as some people have noted.

Paul Messenger, a Conservative county councillor for Ramsgate, questioned whether the government had run proper checks on the firm’s financial stability, management experience, and fitness to fulfill the contract, telling the BBC: “It has no ships and no trading history so how can due diligence be done? Why choose a company that never moved a single truck in their entire history and give them £14m? I don’t understand the logic of that.”

Seaborne was established two years ago and has been in negotiations about running freight ferries between Ramsgate and Ostend, but no services are currently running. Narrow berths in the port mean there are few suitable commercial vessels available.

There are two options here. Either the whole thing is a typical civil service fuck up or somebody has trousered £13.8 million of taxpayers money without ever intending to do anything to earn it.

MORE BREXIT:

‘Brexiteers Consider your ETHICS! raves EU President Tusk in scaremongering speech threatening CATASTROPHE

EU chief Donald Tusk has made an astounding and irrational attack on Brexiteers and appeared to question the ethics of Leave voters as he used Brexit to urge politicians to consider what the consequences of their actions would be. If you thought Juncker was EU President BTW, you were right, in the best traditions of a bloated bureaucracy the EU has three presidents.

A Polish guy lecturing us on ethics? I read a lot of history and I remember reading several accounts of how in the 1930s Poland followed Germany’s lead and elected a Nazi government. Can;t see much ethical about that.

Speaking in Dortmund, Germany, Tusk said he wanted to remind leaders it was the centenary of the end of the First World War, when “sleepwalkers in power” with “hopelessly weak imaginations” led Europe to “catastrophe”. The European Council president said he wanted to dedicate the words of sociologist Max Weber to the “authors of Brexit”. He used the example of Brexit to urge politicians to consider what the consequences of their actions would be.

OK, if that’s how he feels, we should tell him Poland can forget about coming crying to us next time germany or Russia feels like giving them a kicking.

He went on to say: “Today we need leaders who understand that their role is not only having techonoctraic skill and the ability to stay in power. We need leaders who can use the potential of emotions to defend our fundamental values.

“When today I hear European politicians who wipe out all the tradition of liberal democracy for whom human rights, minority rights, government within the law, the precedence of the constitution over the will of rulers and free media are empty slogans I loudly say ‘no because I know what these principles mean remembering still what life is like for a man deprived of rights who is at the mercy, or lack of mercy of those in power.

“Europe is the best place on earth and the European Union is the best political invention in our history.”

All of which is rather projectile vomit inducing hypocrisy when we remember what the EU did to little Greece when they asked the EU to remember its ethical obligations, and what it is trying to to to not so litlle Britain and Italy (and fair play to Italy for standing its ground, while the political whore Theresa May tries to sell her country’s values, traditions and sovereignty.)

Elites Losing The War On Cash? Sweden U-Turns On ‘Cashless Society’ Agenda

image: https://gsiexchange.com/

Sweden was until now proudly leading the advance in the War On Cash, the neo – Maoist ruling elite had pushed the idea that a cashless society, with all financial activity moved to electronic media would protect citizens from crime and be more convenient. There was no mention when the idea was pitched by politicians and bankers that in a cashless society we would completely surrender control of our money to banks, and our privacy in financial matters to government security agencies. Yes, every electronic financial transaction is recorded, your spending habits are tracked, and while disreputable organisations like Google, Facebook and Twitter will sell that information to anybody who can afford to pay, governments can use it against you in many other ways.

In a surprise turnaround Sweden’s Riksbank this weekend has  become the first central bank in the 21st century to take concrete measures to ensure that cash does not disappear as a means of payment from the financial system, in opposition to corporate efforts to force retail customers away from cash. To achieve that the Riksbank proposes, in a document published on its website, to mandate that all banks and financial institutions continue to offer cash services.

The policy initiative comes in response to a recent proposal suggestion by the Riksbank Committee that only the country’s six major banks should be obligated to continue offering cash services.

That prompted a reaction from Sweden’s competition watchdog, which argued that the plan would distort competition as it would affect only a few of the nation’s banks. In response, the Riksbank has opted to apply the rule to “all banks and other credit institutions that offer payment accounts.”

There was also a disagreement between the RiksbankCommittee (a political overseer,) and the central bank’s senior management over what deposit facilities should be offered. While the Committee recommended that banks should only be obliged to provide deposit facilities to businesses, the Riksbank believes it is important for banks to also offer deposit services to private citizens:

“This is a service that consumers can reasonably expect of credit institutions. There must also be symmetry between withdrawal and deposit facilities. In the Riksbank’s view, there is otherwise a risk that the possibilities for individuals to make deposits will decrease even further in the future. For most consumers, it would also be difficult to understand why they can withdraw cash from an account but not make deposits.”

For yearsnow, both the ultra progressive Swedish the government and the Riksbank management have been pushing for a “cashless society.” The Riksbank has over 1,000 articles posted on its website on the “cashless society“. The emphasis worked: between 2013 and 2017, the amount of cash in circulation dropped by 35%, earning Sweden a reputation as the world’s “most cashless nation”.

Many of Sweden’s bank branches had stopped handling cash altogether, but now will have to begin doing so again. Many of them are not happy about it arguing that access to cash should be the sole responsibility of the state and not private banks.

“To secure access to cash is a collective good that the state should reasonably be responsible for,” the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority said. It’s an opinion that’s shared by ATM provider Bankomat, which argued that it should be the state’s responsibility to ensure that citizens have access to cash since the handing of notes and coins is such an important — and expensive — part of a country’s infrastructure.

Shops and restaurants, could also be affected by a suggestion that retail operations which provide public services, such as pharmacies, transport services, food shops and petrol stations, should also “be included in an obligation to accept cash.”

One likely result of this is that many people who struggle to navigate the digital system, or who don’t have credit cards, in particular the elderly, no longer have to fear finding themselves locked out of the country’s payment system.’ There is also that section of society known as ‘the underclass – and yes Sweden does have them despite government efforts to present the nation as a socialist utopia in which things like poverty, crime, prostitution and begging are unknown. Sweden’s parliament has also launched a review on the impact of going cashless too quickly as it excludes the financial needs of the elderly, children and tourists who rely on cash.

It is a dramatic u-turn for a country that not so long ago was further along the path toward eliminating cash than just about any other advanced economy. Sweden enlisted its citizens as largely willing guinea pigs in an economic experiment that was doomed from the start — negative interest rates. People quick on the uptake will have worked out in such a system we, the punters pay the bank to gamble with our hard earned. But a negative interest rate policy (NIRP) has its limits with consumers as long as cash remains an alternative because while you have to pay for the privilege of having money in the bank, stuffing it in a matress or under the floorboards is free. And that is the true explanation of the eagerness to eliminate cash. It was not for our protection or our convenience, but to make stealing from us easier for banks, financial services companies and governments.

France: Shock resignations and ‘chaos’ threaten Macron government.

Emmanuel Macron, the man who, in the biggest political stitch up since Hitler grabbed power in 1933, came from nowhere to be shoehorned into the French presidency, is now, less than two years after triumphantly proclaiming he would rule “in the style of a Roman God, finds himself desperately clinging to power as his government falls apart. Following the shock resignation of his steadfastly loyal interior minister Gerard Collomb, which could cripple the second phase of the unceasingly unpopular Macron’s plan to transform France into a one party state, the French President looks very much like a lame duck.

The shock resignation of Mr Collomb, Mr Macron’s most senior cabinet member, hot on the heels of several other senior officials handing in their resignations, poses a fresh dilemma for the president – whether to replace him or use it as an opportunity to reshuffle his team.

The resignation itself was not entirely shocking: Colomb has been making his dissatisfaction with Macron known for some time, but it was the way it was handled and the subsequent mockery of Mr Macron’s leadership style that gave the French President yet another problematic month.

Despite Mr Macron pleading with Mr Collomb not to leave and shockingly refusing to accept his notice, he left anyway and spoke of his desire to leave Mr Macron’s cabinet “as soon as possible”.

The very act of speaking to the French media is considered a debacle in itself, as Mr Macron has banned any member of his team from doing so without his permission.

That, teamed with his meticulous leadership style, which caused the French media to nickname him the “manager-President” due to him interfering in minuscule matters, 2am texts and colour-coordinating his timetable in a manner similar to a student approaching exam week has resulted in his popularity taking a nose-dive by 30 percent.

Mr Collomb is not the only addition to Mr Macron’s cabinet that resigned just 18 months into his presidency. Other officials in Mr Macron’s team who have stepped down include defence minister Sylvie Goulard and former party chief Richard Ferrand to name a few.

French Environment Minister Nicolas Hulot was another who quit, citing huge differences with Mr Macron as his reason, as he added: “I can’t lie to myself anymore”

So much for governing in style of a Roman God. If Macron had a proper education instead of that STEM bollocks that passes for education these days, he’d know that Roman Emperors were declared gods shortly before they were stabbed in the back.
