EU IN CRISIS: Germany Fails To Form Coalition Government – New Election Likely

Germany’s efforts to form a coalition government in the wake of September’s inconclusive election finally collapsed yesterday as the classical liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) walked away from the negotiating table last  night after weeks of talks which the loony left Greens effectively wrecked by insisting every policy initiative they put forward was non negotiable. This mean Germany, the European Unions most populous and economically powerful nation is without a viable  government.

The coalition talks were triggered when disastrous election results for Germany’s traditional mainstream parties in September, (which saw the votes shares of Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and left-wing Martin Schulz’s Social Democrats (SPD) plunge to historic lows.) Small anti – EU and anti – immigraton parties benefitted most, with the right-wing populists Alternative for Germany (AfD) surging to third largest party.

The difficult electoral result for Mrs. Merkel and the refusal of her previous ‘grand coalition’ partner the SPD to enter coalition again left just one option with enough seats to command half the Bundestag — the so-called Black-Yellow-Green ‘Jamaica coalition’ of Merkel’s party supported by the FDP and Greens.

Yet the yellow portion of this potential group — the FDP — walked away from the table Sunday night, days after the informal cut-off date for the end of negotiations passed. Party leader Christian Lindner said the talks had failed to find a common cause on how to run the country, and that at least was the bare minimum for a stable government, reports Die Welt.

The most likely way forward for Germany, but the one the pro – EU political establishment fear most , would be for the president to call a snap election, which would have to take place within 60 days. Most pro – EU politicians and commentators say this would be a “disaster” for the country and for democracy, and yet it is considered by many as becoming more likely with every passing day

Figures from opinion polls suggest that if there were to be another election early in the new years Merkel’s party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) would again lose many parliametary seats, and the populist AfD would enjoy another boost, potentially gaining dozens of more seats.

Whatever the outcome, it seems inevitable that Angela Merkel’s time as Chancellor of Germany is limited, spelling the end of 12 years of power.

There is a clear frustration with the present situation, with a majority of Germans when asked saying they would prefer to have another election soon, to settle the future governance of their country.

A second election is likely to prove as inconclusive as the first however, now the first preference of coalition has failed and the leader of the second largest party, the SPD, has again insisted he would not join a grand coalition.

Germany’s president Frank-Walter Steinmeier could choose to ignore the result and crown Merkel chancellor for a historic fourth term anyway, allowing her to rule a minority government — although this would probably be unable to govern as opposition parties would unite against it, thus creating a constitutional crisis and further damaging public faith in the institutions of government. Germany’s crisis will further destabilise the European Union and on top of the Brexit vote and ongoing political instability in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Belgium and mounting opposition to EU policies in France, The Netherlands, Poland, Denmark, Sweden and Austria, could lead to the disintegration of the union .

The euro currency has already reacted to the failure of coalition talks by falling against Sterling Monday morning.

German media has already identified the migrant crisis as a key cause of the collapse of support for Angela Merkel, the failure of the coalition talks, with Die Welt reporting: “The fate of these discussions was already sealed on 5th September 2015. Merkel’s decision to keep the German border open for refugees for a variety of reasons led to the closing of the door [on this] Sunday for the first German multi-party coalition”.

The 5th of September date cited by the German newspaper refers to the day Merkel spoke to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a private telephone conversation about the migration crisis then building along the Balkan route. It is alleged Merkel ordered Orban to open Hungary’s borders to undocumented third world migrants. Orban refused. Later that day, Merkel announced through a government spokesman that Germany would not turn away any ‘refugees’ arriving at its borders. As, on orders from Merkel, Germany had already abandoned border checks on all non – EU arrivals in Germany, this amounted to an open invitation to illegal immigrants to simply claim refugeee or asylum seeker status, thus attracting to the country thousands of criminals, gangsters, political extremists, jihadists and terrorists.

Soros: The European Union Is Now In An “Existential Crisis” And Trump’s America Is A “Hostile Power”

Speaking about the state of the European project in the wake of Brexit and the continuing advance of nationalism in EU member states, billionaire glabalist George Soros warned the European Union has plunged into an existential crisis as a result of “dysfunctional” institutions and undemocratic decisions imposed on members, and will require the bloc to reinvent itself to survive.

Addressing the Brussels Economic Forum, the financier and notorious meddler in politics said the EU had “lost its momentum” and urged policymakers to abandon the push towards “ever closer union” which has been driven by a top-down approach from Brussels and a Franco – German accord which has been detrimental to smaller member states. His statement is likely to provoke a backlash from Germany, which has most to gain from futher political and economic integration, being already the dominant economic power in the bloc.

“The European Union is now in an existential crisis,” Soros told the audience. “Most Europeans of my generation were supporters of further integration. Subsequent generations came to regard the EU as an enemy that deprives them of a secure and promising future.”

Just a day after Brussels published a paper mapping out its vision of eurozone integration, Mr Soros warned that the single currency area had become “the exact opposite of what was originally intended” according to the Telegraph.

According to a CNBC report, Soros said “Europe’s reinvention would have to revive the support that the European Union used to enjoy.” The reinvention would have to consider past mistakes and to understand what went wrong, and make proposals to make things right, he added.

Soros, who is said by many to have been instumental in engineering Europe’s immigration crisis, praised a German proposal to reduce EU payments aimed at reducing income inequalities for countries that defy Brussels diktat. Hungary and Poland, both net recipients of these ‘cohesion funds’, have been criticized by the EU Commission for their refusal to accept bureaucratically imposed immigant quotas.

The billionaire also had some harsh words for the high handed treatement by the bureaucrats of the EU on southern and eastern European nations which have been crippled economically by membership of the single currency (the Euro). “By imposing an austerity policy they made it practically impossible for the debtor countries to grow out of their debts. The net result was neither voluntary nor equal.”

He also said loss of trust in the EU has led to support for anti-European political parties, explaining: “Now we need a collaborative effort that combines the top-down approach of the EU institutions with the bottom-up movements that are necessary to engage the electorate, instead of a “multi-speed” Europe we should aim for a “multi-track” Europe that would allow member states a wider variety of choices. This would have a far-reaching beneficial effect.”

He urged the bloc to focus on three key areas – dealing with the refugee crisis, Brexit and “the lack of an economic growth strategy”.

Predictably, the man who was behind the movement that sent 1 million allegedly Syrian refugees (but mostltly African and Asian economic migrants,) to Germany in the past 2 years, Soros said Europe needs to overcome the current existential crisis by fighting together against the rise of anti-European sentiment, xenophobic feelings and surrounding hostile powers.

“Externally the EU is now surrounded by hostile powers: Putin’s Russia, Erdogan’s Turkey, Sisi’s Egypt and the America that Trump would like to create but can’t,” Soros said.

He called for a rewriting of European treaties to make the EU work for all members rather than just Germany and the development of a “multitrack” bloc where countries would retain more sovereignty when it comes to decisions on integration, migrant policy and setting interest rates.

Would Hungary Be Denied EU Membership If It Applied Now?

Were Hungary to appy for EU membership now, under its current government, it would be rejected,  former NATO secretary-general and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana has said. It’s not surprising that a democratically elected government like that of Hungary, which tries to put the welfare of its people head of the political and economic ambitions of the global elites would arrtact the ire of the European Union’s bureaucratic dictatorship, which is quite happy to endorse the accession to full membership of terrorist state Turkey, which is know to have aided and funded the activities if Islamist terror group ISIS in Syria, Iraq and Kurdistan.

Solana said his intention was to raise concerns about the “epidemic of nationalism” across the bloc. Citizens of EU nations need to unite to raise concerns about the increasing authoritarianism of the unelected bureaucrats who run the European Union.

While globalist EUronazis are worried by the actions of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Solana’s raising questions about Hungary’s EU credentials if it were currently applying for membership should be seen as a threat to member nations that do not comply with the Brussels diktat.

“With the reform of the Constitution of 2013 some of the mechanisms that limited government action on key issues were eliminated,” Solana wrote in an opinion piece for Spanish newspaper El Pais.

“Also, a state council was established with members of the party itself, to regulate the media. It has been said that if today asked Hungary for membership in the European Union, would be rejected.”

‘An Epidemic of Nationalism’

Along with Hungary, Solana also highlighted concerns he held about the direction of the government in Poland, saying an “epidemic of nationalism” had developed in the countries.

“Unfortunately, the epidemic of nationalism and anti-European sentiment has also reached these countries in Eastern Europe. Although there are many causes and countries are not easily comparable, there are two clear trends: the rise of nationalism and the decline of the rule of law.”

Instead of trying to cooperate within the EU to get their voices heard, Solana said Poland and Hungary were trying to “present European policies as challenges to their true national identity”.

Obviously Solana, like most of the elite, has a lot of trouble getting his head round the concept of democracy. Like the medieval aristocracy, who gained their position by conquest, these people think they are a superior species to the ‘downtrodden masses’. They need to be reminded very regularly that if they continue to act like dictators it is they who will be down and ‘we the people who will be doing the treading’.

Vettel Trips Over Lip

The F1 World Sulking Championship moved along to Hungary this week, throwing up a new contender for the title on the way.

Poor old Fernando Alonso, having been sulking almost continually for the last two months was unfortunately unable to get in a strop about anything.

He managed a creditable third on the grid ahead of his teammate Massa and remained remarkably cool to force his way past Webber and up into second by the end of the second corner.

Pitting early on in the safety car controlled period he maintained his position behind Vettel, but dropped to third as Webber elected to keep going.

As the safety car prepared to pull over, Webber tucked up nice and close behind it, Vettel appeared to be backing up the field, ready for the re-start, falling foul of the regulation that states the cars should be within ten car’s lengths of the safety car, but not even that could make Fernando lose his rag.

Vettel was duly called into the pits for a drive through penalty, leaving Fernando in second with an unassailable gap to Webber up ahead, and a dramatically diminishing gap to the hard charging Vettel.

As we all learnt long ago, apart from Fernando that is, it isn’t enough to be the fastest man on the track, you’ve also got to be able to pass the man in front, and if he isn’t part of your team there is no way he can be made to move aside to let you through.

So Vettel, who set lots and lots of fastest laps during the race, was stuck behind Fernando, and as Fernando knows only too well, the Ferraris are a bugger to pass.

Having to settle for third when obviously he was expecting a win, Vettel looked like he’d been sucking on a lemon for the entire race.
That man could scowl for Germany.
He ranted and raved, stuck his bottom lip out, slouched in his chair like an angry teenager, blamed everyone else except himself and stormed through to take the full 25 points in the Sulking Championship.

Rubens Barrichello used to do sulking, when he was younger and partnered with Schumacher at Ferrari.
These days, as The Stig’s Faster Brazillian Cousin, he does affable, laid-back, grand-old-man-of-the-sport.

Having been harrassing his former team mate for several laps Rubens finally made his move on lap 65, lunging down the right of Schumacher as they screamed down the pit straight.
Schumacher, who still does the villain of the piece best of all, took a good look in his mirrors and then calmly moved to the right, squeezing Barrichello up to the wall.
Rubens held his breath and his ground until the pit wall ended and he was able to take advantage of the pit lane exit to surge past Schumi.
I was quite surprised that on completing the passing manoeuvre RB didn’t stick his hand up out of the cockpit and make the universal gesture to show Schumi what a wanker he was.

Interviewed later Schumacher claimed it was all Barrichello’s fault, Schumi had moved across to the right because he was leaving loads of room for Rubens to pass on the left…
