UK Prime Minister Boris (BoJo) Johnson today stuck his head firmly up America’s arse when he said that thanks to the presidency of dementia sufferer Joe Biden “America is unreservedly back” as undisputed leader of the free world, seemingly deriding the leadership of former President Trump at a virtual summit of the Munich Security Conference.

In a Zoom meeting with the leaders of the G7 nations, Prime Minister Johnson said of the Biden administration: “America is unreservedly back as the leader of the free world and that is a fantastic thing.” If it was so that would be a pity because post Brexit Britain was poised to assume leadership of the free world, but objiously the half – witted traitor Johnson’s loyalties lie elsewhere.

In a snide insult to Donald Trump, the globalist and Davos lackey Johnson added: “The gloom has been overdone. And we’re turning a corner and the countries we call the West are drawing together and combining their formidable strength and expertise once again.”

We at Boggart Blog believe the Harris – Biden presidency, with mentally impaired Biden acting as moderate front man while far left race baiter Kamala Harris is really in charge, answerable only to the cabal of billionaires who want to establish an authoritarian global government, is really calling the altune. Johnson, who like his predecessor Theresa May threw away the chance to strike the British-American trade deal offered by Trump by leaving the EU in control of British trade policy until 2021, used the virtual summit to push for the adoption of the green agenda aims suggested to him by his Miss Piggy lookalike girlfriend who has political ambitions of her own, saying that he will push for other countries to commit to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.

Recent newspaper headlines have declared that ‘Amsterdam ousts London as Europe’s top share trading hub’. This has been seen as another downside of the UK leaving the UK. Amsterdam has become Europe’s most important hub for trading shares with London pushed into second place. For Amsterdam, this was a dramatic shift for a city that in November 2020 was fifth behind Paris, Frankfurt, and Milan.

There are many ways of reading this shift. On the one hand, in Brexit terms, it is perhaps surprising that London remains in second place rather than being pushed down the list of European share trading centres. On the other hand, it is perhaps surprising that Amsterdam has surpassed Paris and Frankfurt. This really should have been a story about the emergence of a new European Global Financial Centre that would displace London and compete on equal terms with New York and Shanghai.

Amsterdam’s emergence as the primary centre for European share trading suggests that the European Union will never develop a global financial centre that displaces London for four reasons.

First, the European Commission (EC), and the member states, would have to agree to focus all financial service activities in a single centre. A decision would have to be made to position Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris, Milan, or Dublin as the emergent European Global Financial Centre. Many people who think seriously about stuff will already be aware of the phenomenal cost to the UK economy of 4 months lockdown and another three partial lockdown earlier this year and wondering how the nation can possibly endure, both economically and socially, another month of lockdown with possibly more to follow. Well worry not my friends, according to economist and Wall Street Journal contributor Matthew Lynn the Bank of England has the answer, we just print some more money.

As we all lock ourselves in the cupboard under the stairs and England goes back into lockdown today, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced another injection of £££s tens of billions to support the economy through the Covid-19 crisis (Chapter 99,900?) Surely the money will run out soon, will it not? Well, according to Mr. Lynn, no. So long as the Bank of England can print money fast enough the economy will stay afloat. We will hit a crisis eventually, but not for a long time – and we shouldn’t expect the Bank to rescue us from lockdown by imposing economic sanity on the government and its scientific advisers. 

Alongside keeping interest rates at almost zero while fuelling inflation the government is destroying the value of your saving and pensions, driving down the purchasing power of earnings, and undermining the currency. Yet they casually pumped another £150 billion into the economy through another round of ‘quantitative easing’ for the sake of prologing the misery of a few chronically ill people.

Even at the rate Sunak spends, that is a huge sum. In effect, the Bank will be funding the Government’s entire deficit for the year, and it will be doing it with little more than a few keystrokes on Andrew Bailey’s computer. In total, it now plans to print an extra £895 billion to counter the Covid-19 crisis, and no doubt more will be done if necessary. What started out as a one-off £200 billion to deal with the crash of 2008 has now multiplied five-fold, and it probably won’t stop there. 

A magic money tree? Perhaps. But as the linked article shows we have been picking the low hanging fruit from that for a long time, since the financial crisis of 2008 in fact. According to Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) we can carry on creating fiat money in this way for a long time. The Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan, and the European Central Bank are printing even more than The Bank Of England. Keynesean theorists will tell you we are only borrowing from ourselves.

“Bugger me with the blunt end of a ragman’s trumpet,” you might well exclaim, why do we all bother going to work and paying our taxes when it’s possible to finance our lives by borrowing money from ourselves? I had no idea that we could spend our lives goofing around and the Bank of England would pay us for it.

I wonder if the author, who writes for one of the world’s leading economic journals remember, is aware that “printing money” does not actually mean topping up the ink reservoirs and staring the printing presses. Central banks create money by issuing bonds which bear a fixed interest rate or coupon value and are sold at auction to the highest bidder. The ‘yield’ is the true interest rate. If the bonds sell for more than the face value the yield is less that the fixed interest rate, if they sell for less then the yield is higher.
When a central bank floods the market with bonds (as is happening with most central banks now,) the yield on those bonds crashes,

As long as large portions of the economy remain on lockdown, the government will be forced to perform massive stimulus programs/ social spending. As I write this Friday morning, the House is preparing to vote on a $3 trillion stimulus bill later today.

While the particular bill in question is chock full of Democrats’ legislation (more abortion funding, banning voter IDs, etc.), and likely won’t make it through the Senate in this particular form, the White House and the GOP are both in favor of providing additional stimulus checks to Americans in the near future.

Put simply, regardless of specific political affiliations, the political class is currently in favor of spending vast amounts of money right now.

All of this money has to come from somewhere. Currently, it’s the debt markets (the Treasury will borrow $3 trillion between April and June alone). But at some point, the Powers That Be will begin looking for new sources of capital.

Indeed, if history has taught us anything it’s that once the government/ elites use a crisis to make a massive power grab, rarely if ever is that power given back to the people.

We saw this with the Patriot Act in 2001, the policy response to the 2008 crisis. And it’s happening again today with the economic shutdown. While individual states will all eventually reopen, the fact is that the US just took a massive jump towards outright socialism/ central planning. And the political class LOVES it.

This will result in a collapsing economy, which in turn will mean lower tax revenues, which in turn will mean a greater need for capital to finance social spending programs/ unemployment/ stimulus checks.

The debt markets will pick up much of the slack here, but at some point the political class will start looking for new sources of capital.

That source will be you, me and everyone else.

The plan behind this has been in place since 2011. Elites knew well in advance that another crisis was coming, and they put in place legislation that would allow them to:

1)    Freeze bank accounts and use them to “bail-in” financial institutions/ banks.

2)    Close the “gates” on investment funds/ money market funds to stop you from getting your money out.

3)    Impose wealth taxes and seize unused assets.

Did you know the IMF has already called for nations around the world to introduce a wealth tax of 10% on NET WEALTH as soon as possible?

If you think that’s bad, consider that the Fed plans to both seize and STEAL savings during the next crisis/ recession.

When Philadelphia City Councilman Bill Greenlee heard that a coffee shop and a salad restaurant right near City Hall didn’t accept cash, he thought it sounded unfair.

“I can get my coffee and muffin, but the person behind me who has the monetary unit of the United States of America, that’s been accepted here in Philadelphia since Ben Franklin, can’t?” he said in an interview. “It just seemed wrong.”

So last October, Greenlee (who uses both card and cash) co-sponsored a bill requiring businesses to accept cash. In March, Mayor Jim Kenney signed it into law.

Cashless stores and events are just starting to crop up in the retail landscape with much hoopla — consider the splashy launches of Amazon Go stores —  but they’re already running into hurdles from legislators in cities and states around the country. These governments are concerned that what some see as technological innovation could actually widen societal gaps between those who have access to financial services and those who don’t.

This work could ensure we don’t end up with a future in which there are stores that lower-income people just can’t use. But this legislation may also prevent new cashless experiments from ever taking hold and help cash stay king for a long time.

 

Cash’s demise at the hands of cards, e-commerce and mobile payments has been heralded for decades as a faster and more secure way to pay for stuff. After all, you can’t lose a digital wallet the same way you can lose a real one. Yet cash is still the most frequently used form of payments (representing 30% of all transactions), particularly for smaller transactions (where it’s 55%), according to the Federal Reserve.

While you might opt to pay for a bottle of water with card instead of cash, there’s still a swath of the population that doesn’t have that choice. Roughly 8.4 million households in the US were considered “unbanked” in 2017, according to the FDIC. That means no one in those households had access to a checking or savings account.

Why The Western Democracies Are Failing

For too long the democratic nations of the world, which are mostly in North America and Europe, with some outposts such as Autralia, have followed the lead of The United States of America both economically and socially. And the USA has been leading us to disaster for fifty years.

Forget this week’s utter fiasco of Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the upreme court, and the utterly pathetic attempt by the Democrats to prevent President Tump’s nominee’s conformation. It doesn’t matter whether Brett Kavanaugh becomes a justice of the Supreme Court or not; one more Deep State lackey will change nothing.

For years, the Courts and elected assemblies of has looked the other way as the banking cartel colaborated with central banks and global corporations to rob one class of citizen (ordinary, working people) and reward another (the elite).

As a result, the American economic empire faces a catastrophic crisis as wealth concentrates in fewer hands, and the debts of the have nots (both nations and individuals, become overwhelming. The resurgence of nationalism in Europe is one symptom, the increasing number of regional conflicts and rising tensions between the western democracies and the non – democratic eastern bloc, is another. And the upsuge in Islamic fundamentalism is the third and probably the most dangerous. All this is being played out to the accompaniment of internal schisms, social breakdowns, and dangerous political scuffles.

Why, you might well ask.

If you work by the hour, the boss can buy your time. That’s what it really means to say someone is “rich” – he has more time because he can control not only his own, but yours, too.

Somebody who had $1,000 worth of stocks in 1971 could buy approximately 250 of the average working man’s hours. Today, that $1,000 worth of stocks is worth about $28,000… which, at today’s $26-per-hour average, will buy 1,077 hours of the typical working man’s time – four times as much as in 1971.

In other words, compared to the wage earner, the capitalist is four times as rich.

Invert it, and you see about the same thing. A working man would have had to labor for 212 hours to buy the 30 Dow stocks in 1971. Today, his time is much less valuable; he has to sweat for over 1,100 hours to buy the Dow.

It is this hollowing out of the middle class (not the middle class in the British sense, where the class system is much more complicated,) that is behind the chaos in the democratic world. The group in the middle is getting smaller, the’poor’ are growing exponentially in number and the rich are getting richer and more out of touch with the realities other classes face. It cannot end well.

America Takes A Step Closer To Becoming A Cashless Society

If you order a beer at a Flatstick pub in Seattle, Washington, don’t try to pay with $10 bill — you’ll walk away thirsty. It’s not that the US state of Washington has started charging Scandinavian prices for booze, but that Flatstick, a hot new mini-chain in the Pacific Northwest, does not accept cash. Neither does Bluestone Lane, an east coast coffee chain with locations in New York, Philly and D.C. Patrons there have to pay with plastic or an app called LevelUp.

Cashless commerce is popping up around the country, particularly in restaurants catering to a younger crowd, the kind of university brainwashed millenials who think its cool to make life easy for rip off merchants by relying on contactless cards or smart phone apps to pay. It seems millenials are more likely to leave home without any greenbacks, or even a wallet, and instead choose to live life with a smartphone and a few credit or debit cards attached. Or perhaps due to the abject failure of the education system these dorks haven’t mastered the basic arithmetic needed to use csh transactions.

Businesses who’ve gone cashless rave about the results. Flatstick owner Sam Largent told me plastic-only reduces error rates during times of complex accounting, such as calculating tips when shifts change. I’m not sure why customers should care about that but then in Europe your waiter is not likely to shoot you for tipping too little.

The value of cash transactions sank 7% from 2010 to 2015, according to The Nilson Report, while credit and debit card payments increased by nearly 50%. Meanwhile, ATMs, which had their 50th birthday last year, are disappearing around around the world, signaling the decline of the “cash run.”

Cash-free environments aren’t brand new. Political establishments have been pushing the idea of cashless lives for decades, the better to keeep tabs on the spending habits of individuals. Airlines went cashless a long time ago (for meals and other onboard purchases), and many other businesses are only taking automated payments (it gives them an excuse to fire another human being.) And with the meteoric rise of friend-to-friend payment apps like Venmo, Zelle and Splitwise, we’re no longer throwing $20 bills on the table after a meal (or handing over cash or checks to roommates for the gas bill).

But cash is a long away from dead, and as usual we find governments and mainstream media are deploying fake news to advance their agenda. The US Federal Reserve said in 2016 that 35% of U.S. transactions were still made in cash although 42% of UK transactions are still in cash. Numbers for other European countries, with the Scandinavian countries leading the race to dystopia while the nations of southern and eastern Europe cling to their banknotes.. And the amount of cash being used around the world continues to rise. Plus, there are still many of obstacles to going cashless.

For starters, the estimates suggest that around 7% of the populations of developed nations still do not use banking facilities. In other words, they live an all-cash life, so would be entirely shut out in a cashless society. Some also like the anonymity that comes with paying cash. Others use cash for budgeting reasons (when you’re out of cash, you stop spending – simples).

Still, on a global scale, eliminating cash offers some intriguing possibilities. Merely the elimination of large denomination banknotes, which the EU has done, makes life much harder for large-enterprise criminals, like drug dealers according to technocrats. OK, it’s far more conspicuous to carry around large piles of small bills, but wire transfers between banks in Switzerland and The Cayman Islands present no problems. And if you connect through a VPN the transaction is untraceable. People who claim that if all financial transactions were electronic, hiding crime would become much more difficult are takling bollocks. They either have little understanding of how the internet works (or how much of it is invisible to the World Wide Web,) or they are on the side of the big league criminals and corporate pirates.

EU Flushes €1trillion Down Toilet – Achives Nothing

The Wall Street Journal has revealed the most outrageous waste of European taxpayers’ money yet by the Euronazi EU in its quest to fulfill the dream of a European Federal Superstate, a dream very similar to Adolf hitler’s dream of uniting Euorope under one flag.

The WSJ reports The EU Spent a Bundle to Unify the Continent. It’s Not Working.

The European Union has spent nearly one trillion dollars to unify the continent by delivering highways and trains into places where there were once gravel paths. In current dollars, that is over eight times the size of the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe after World War II. The EU has built airports and bridges, trams and swimming pools. It has repaired castles and medieval churches.

It hasn’t bought love.

To the vexation of European leaders, some of the biggest recipients of funding are now hotbeds of discontent, brimming with voters disquieted by the cultural and political pressures that have accompanied European integration, and threatening the bloc’s cohesion.

The biggest recipient of EU cohesion funds in mainland France is Nord-Pas-de-Calais, once an industrial powerhouse of coal, steel and textiles. In parliament, it is represented by Marine Le Pen, the French presidential runner-up who proposed France hold an EU exit referendum.

Many locals say EU funding was overshadowed by the disadvantages of membership, including the obligation to accept migrants from other EU nations. Blaenau Gwent voters favored Brexit by 62% to 38% to leave the EU in 2016. It was Wales’ highest “leave” vote.

The future of the EU still hangs in the balance, with divisions over refugees in particular driving wedges between its member states. If copious spending during decades of European optimism couldn’t revive fading communities or unite the continent, EU officials worry about what comes next. Rising nationalism is pitting smaller, eastern countries against larger, western powers.

EU funding can carry onerous rules and stipulations involving complex paperwork and restrictions on project types, irking recipients. East European nationalists allege that much of the money flows back to German and French construction companies.

Donor countries have soured on cohesion funds, too, partly because of alleged corruption among recipients. In Hungary, where skepticism of the EU runs thick, the bloc’s antifraud agency says $47.8 million spent upgrading street lamps through EU contracts awarded to a company once owned by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s son-in-law contained “serious irregularities” that may constitute fraud. The son-in-law denies the accusation. Mr. Orban says Hungary no longer needs EU cash.

Who Gives, Who Gets?

Member states that receive ‘cohesion money’ are unhappy because of immigration and other political strings attached to the money which they claim is a further erosion of their sovereignty. The donors are unhappy that because of the obligation placed on them by the EU, their money is going to other European nations leaving them strapped for cash to deal with domestic problems.

So far, since the signing in 2007 of the Lisbon Treaty, which effectively laid to rest the charade that the EU formerly EEC and Common Market was simply an association for economic cooperation between European nations, and transformed the European Project into a bid to politically unify the member states into a single political entity, the divisions between member states have been steadily growing, leading to the recent resurgence of nationalism across the continent.

Has The Tech Backlash Begun

The world of high tech, Internet based businesses have had things all their own way as governments and regulators meekly stood aside while tech companies played fast and loose with users data, (not talking about the data gathered from our explorations of their sites or personal details we volunteer, but the practice of ‘data mining,’ scraping up personal details from our hard drives,) destroyed whole industries, turned the high streets of our towns and shopping centres of our cities into deserts, made “not-fit-for-purpose” an acceptable quality for goods on sale, and dehumanised the whole process of buying and of socialising.

It was inevitable there would be a backlash, not from business rivals, politicians sweetened by campaign contributions and fearful of being dubbed anti – progress or anti – science have let the tech industries get away with murder – literally in some cases. The resistance was always going to come from ‘we the punters’.

For almost two decades we have complied with exhortations to ’embrace change’ even when it was clear the change was not for the better, we have been pushed into shifting most of our financial business online, trusting financial details and our money to a notoriously insecure medium, we have been squeezed into buying from online retailers, knowing through mainstream media that ‘customer service’ was a completely alien concept to the bosses of these organisations, and we have accepted an increasingly impersonal world where increasingly our interfaces are with robots.

AND ALL THE TIME WE WERE ABLE TO SEE THIS BRAVE NEW WORLD WAS JUST NOT WORKING.

What’s happening? Bernie Sanders Agrees With Trump: Amazon Has Too Much Power

Independent Vermont senator and 2016 presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders echoed President Donald Trump in expressing concern about retail giant Amazon. Sanders said that he felt Amazon had gotten too big on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, and added that Amazon’s place in society should be examined.

“And I think this is, look, this is an issue that has got to be looked at. What we are seeing all over this country is the decline in retail. We’re seeing this incredibly large company getting involved in almost every area of commerce. And I think it is important to take a look at the power and influence that Amazon has,” said

Sanders.

After the backlash against Facebook over the past few weks for privacy abuses, and the backlash led by President Trump against Amazon, is there something bigger going on. Are these things connected? Yes, they probably are, but not in a way that either Trump or Sanders has clued in to. Someone who has, a for now lone voice, is Dave Stockman, a financial pundit who describes himself as a Washington insider turned iconoclast. Here’s what he wrote last week.

It is said that even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn, and so it goes with The Donald. Banging on his Twitter keyboard in the morning darkness, he drilled Jeff Bezos a new one – or at least that’s what most people would call having their net worth lightened by about $2 billion:

“I have stated my concerns with Amazon long before the Election. Unlike others, they pay little or no taxes to state & local governments, use our Postal System as their Delivery Boy (causing tremendous loss to the U.S.), and are putting many thousands of retailers out of business!” You can’t get more accurate than that. Amazon is a monstrous predator enabled by the state, but Amazon’s outrageous postal subsidy – a $1.46 gift card from the USPS stabled on each box – isn’t the half of it.

The real crime here is that Amazon has been exempted from financial regulations, and the culprit is the central banks’ malignant regime of Bubble Finance. The latter has destroyed financial discipline entirely and turned the stock market into the greatest den of speculation in human history. That’s why Bezos can kill established businesses with impunity.

The casino allows him to run a pernicious business model based on “price to destroy”, rather than price for profit and a return on capital.Needless to say, under a regime of sound money and honest capital markets Amazon would be a far more benign economic creature. That’s because no real investors would value AMAZON’s money-loosing e-Commerce business at $540 billion – nor even a small fraction of that after 25-years of profitless growth.

The bubble economy that was forced into being by Barack Obama’s stupid and economically illiterate Quantitative Easing policy and ultra-low rates, which saw central banks buying up trillions in what used to be sound assets, corporate bonds, and allowing massive buybacks that allow companies to While stocks nominally trade at astronomical rates, but actual traded volumes are low. Buybacks allow companies to reward managers and senior staff with stock, and then buy back the shares they have paid in lieu of salary or bonus, thus avoiding tax and holding their own stock while running on borrowed money, escaping financial scrutiny. The system allows them to inflate stock market capitalisation and raise their ‘value’ to astronomical levels by inflating the value of shares and capital assets. The system enabled a company like Amazon to kill off its competition, which consists of many thousands of retailers, all the time running a balance sheet loss on paper.

These financial policies have allowed not just Amazon, which though Trumps favourite target currently, but many of the most ‘valuable’ tech companies to expand at an exponential rate without having to account to investors for absence of dividends and thus elbow their way into our lives in ways designed to seem beneficial to us at first, but in reality resulting in less variety, less competition, and thousands fewer jobs. For too long they were the darlings of the media and the stock markets; the creations of the brightest and best among us, according to ‘the narrative.’

For some of the creations of our tech Olympians it’s easier to see the inevitability of disaster than for others. Tesla, Uber, Airbnb are all struggling right now, but more will follow. What you may notice is that two of the three sell noting but ‘cool.’ Tesla also may pretend to be a real car company, but in reality they sell stocks to investors, basing their pitch on promises they cannot fulfill.

Even Apple may not be immune from the carnage even though they make and sell real things they make real things! Apple CEO Tim Cook may have sought to distance his company from the likes of Facebook on morals and ethics, he can’t deny that Apple sells a zillion phones to a large extent because everybody uses them not so much to look at Facebook and Alphabet, Uber and Air BNB apps because there are many cheaper pieces of kit out there that will do the job just as well. People buy Apple in order to be seen using Apple gadgets, so what Apple really sell is social kudos. If data ethics are the only problem Cook sees ahead, he’s in trouble.

Silicon Valley infighting shows that the industry does have an idea what is going wrong, in ways that should have already led to many more pronounced worries and investigations.

Mr. Cook, who has long sought to differentiate Apple on privacy matters, contrasted its focus on selling devices with Facebook and Google’s ad-based businesses that are built on user data. Asked what he would do if he were Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Mr. Cook replied: “I wouldn’t be in this situation.”

Facebook hasn’t responded specifically to criticisms, but the hostility of those who live in the same glass palaces has provoked adverse comments from its own former vice president of growth, Chamath Palihapitiya. “The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works,” Mr. Palihapitiya said at a talk at Stanford University in November.

We can expect to hear much more in the same vein over the remainder of this year. Big Tech is changing the world in more ways than one. And spying on people Facebook-style is merely one of a long list of them. Facebook doesn’t build the devices people use to see what their friends had for breakfast, Apple does that, but it’s the way Apple sells those gadgets that makes it vulnerable. Moreover, Apple profits hugely from stock buybacks, the practice of rewarding senior staff with company stock which they can then sell back to the company, thus incurring a lowrer tax liability than income from salary, so it fits in Stockman’s bubble finance definition of Amazon, too.

The failure of politics to investigate, and act against Facebook style ‘dopamine – driven’ feedback loops which exploit a vulnerability in human psychology in order to maximally waste your time and sell you product after product that you never (knew you) wanted is bordering on criminal negligence. They all made the mistake of thinking they could get away with it forever. What was that somone once said about not being able to fool all the people all the time.

Student sues University for ‘Mickey Mouse’ degree that hasn’t boosted her career

A disgruntled graduate is suing her university after claiming that two years of study at £9000 per year plus attendant living expenses has left her with nothing more than a “Mickey Mouse” degree that has proved useless in advancing her career. Despite graduating with a first. Pok Wong is suing Anglia Ruskin University for more than £60,000.

She alleges the institution’s claims regarding a “quality education and prospect of employment after graduation” were fraudulent, she told The Sunday Telegraph. The case echoes that of Oxford University Faiz Siddiqui, who tried to sue the institution for £1m after it did not give him a first-class degree.

Mr Siddiqui’s case was that “negligently inadequate teaching” was partly to blame for his 2:1 degree, which he claimed prevented him from getting into a top US law school and becomeing an international commercial lawyer.

Lawyers believe the case could influence universities present their courses in marketing materials, as students who spend around £9,000 a year for their education demand value for money and see themselves as customer rather than pupils. Ms Wong said she moved from Hong Kong to Britain to study at the Lord Ashcroft International Business School in Cambridge after being influenced by the claims in the prospectus.

Now the 29-year-old alleged in a complaint lodged with the courts that the university failed to deliver on its promises. She also accused it of a breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation, listing poor discipline among staff and students being told to “self-study” among her complaints.

The degree, in International Business Strategy “does not play a role to help secure a rewarding job with prospects”, she claimed, adding that the prospectus had promised the course would leave graduates “well equipped” for jobs in the business world, following two years of “high quality teaching”.

She also alleged she was “locked” in a room for trying to speak out about the quality of her course during her graduation ceremony, which she has branded as false imprisonment.

Ms Wong hopes the case will encourage other students to demand value for money and seek compensation if universities do not deliver.

“The prospectus convinced me that the university is really impressive,” she told The Sunday Telegraph. “But, as soon as I started in 2011, I realised there were failings. Although I graduated with a first class degree in 2013, it is a Mickey Mouse degree. A spokesperson for Anglia Ruskin University told The Independent: “We are well aware of the claims made by this former student and we are robustly defending the current litigation.

The case echoes that of Oxford University Faiz Siddiqui, who tried to sue the institution for £1m after it did not give him a first-class degree. Mr Siddiqui claimed that “negligently inadequate teaching” was partly to blame for his 2:1 degree, which he said prevented him from getting into a top US law school, and, in turn, meant he could not become an international commercial lawyer. It was inevitable, given the way higher education has been turned into a branch of industry or commerce, with profit as the main motivation, that failure by universities to deliver on claims of enhanced career and earnings potential would result in litigation.

My daughter may even have a case, she was sold the idea of studying for a degree in the history of art, design and film. In the years since her graduation I have spoken to her about art history, a topic on which I am quite well read, and found that aside from hardly touching on film, the course had left her almost totally ignorant of the influence of the Italian renaissance Neapolitan, Florentine and Venitian schools, the Dutch masters and even the more recent pre – Raphaelites and impressionists. In art they focus had been on twentieth century abstract expressionism and surrealism, but most of her course had covered 1950s and 60s pop art design developments.

Career wise it was a total waste of money and has not even equiiped her to have many interesting converstations, what is there to say about plastic chairs.
