Boris Can’t Blame Ukraine War For Energy Crisis

Protestors in Berlin have been holding up placards suggesting they’d sooner shower in cold water than use Russian gas, others however are more concerned about how they will keep warm and cook their food while still others are wondering how they will for to fill their cars with fuel for the commute to work, or buy food with the prices of both fuel and food rocketing.

Meanwhile in Britain Boris Johnson has called on the public to make sacrifices, solemnly telling us that we need to drop cheap Russian energy and ‘accept that such a move will be painful’.

Telling voters that the spiralling inflation we are now experiencing, and the effect on living standards might sound like a politiian trying to be honest for once . Or might it be the case that Boris Johnson, never a man known for plain speaking, is preparing us to be told that Russia’s war against Ukraine, rather than the follies of ‘net zero’ policies and transitioning from fossil fuels to intermittent ‘sustainable’ energy sources are to blame for price rises that coming down the lione long before the first Russian boot stepped over ~Ukraine’s border?

Managing without Russia’s energy supplies will hit the Germany economy hard. German industry and domestic energy supplies have relied heavily on imported Russian natural gas since Germany’s influential but idiotic Green lobby pressured Angela Merkel into abandoning coal and nuclear in favour of wind and solar electricity generators. Germany imported 32 per cent of its gas from Russia in December and wants to reduce that by two-thirds over the next year but has no viable alternative and even Germany’s brilliant engineers cannot conjure current from wind turbines when the wind does not blow or from solar panels when the sun does not shine.

Energy prices throughout Europe were skyrocketing before any economic sanctions were impised on Russia. The energy crunch caused by the failure of green energy policies, and exacerbated by economies restarting after lockdowns, saw UK energy regulator Ofgem raise the energy price cap by 54 per cent, but oil and gas price increases throughout 2021 had already driven dozens of companies out of business by February, 2022.

Higher prices would normally be hard to explain for a governing party committed to the traditional Conservative principle of keeping living costs in check. ‘But the war has changed the narrative in a number of ways,’ says one Conservative lawmaker, ‘the cost of living crunch can also now be blamed on something out of our control.’

Debt servicing payments are increasing by billions of pounds month by month, as nations, already half buried under the mountain of debt they incurred in order to fund the insanity of their pandemic responses now have to flood their economies with even more fiat money to stave of the effects of global price inflation. That, for Johnson and Biden, has meant trying to blame their economic woes on Russia. It might work, but rising prices aren’t a recent phenomenon: they were being shaped by government decision-making long before sanctions hit.

In Britain, inflation has been outpacing official forecasts for months – and was expected to hit 7 per cent even before Ukraine was invaded. One Secretary of State expects the headline rate to hit double digits before the end of the year. In Joe Biden’s America runaway inflation is running even faster with the year on year increase in consumer prices having already topped 8 per cent.

Blaming their economic woes on Russia’s conflict in Ukraine probably seems an easy way out for political shtsters like Johnson and Biden. It would have worked too (to borrow a phrase from Scooby Doo villains,) but for that pesky virus interfereing. No doubt Russia’s war is a serious, and increasing, problem, prticularly when we consider the likely effect of the ban on Ammonium Nitrate (fertiliser) exports to the west. But two years of relentless scaremongering propaganda used to prop up the pandemic narrative have almost destroyed public trust in politics and the madia. Rising prices aren’t a recent phenomenon: they were being shaped by government decision-making, the economic damages caused by unnecessary and ineffective lockdowns and the suspension of commercial activity as entire nations were placed under house arrest, long before sanctions started to contribute to the latest spike in energy prices.

Russia Warns Attack On Saudi Oil Plant Will Hit Fuel Prices

 saudi-oil-fire
World’s largest oil refinery ablaze after Houthi rebels drone strike (picture: Screen grab from Sky News video )

Following the drone attack by Yemeni rebels on a major Saudi Arabian oil processing plant, The Kremlin’s warned that the loss of production from the stricken plant will destabilise oil prices worldwide.  This follows statements by the European Union and the UK condemning the Houthi drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities carried out on Saturday (14 September, 2019).

While President Trump made belligerent noises, guaranteed to provoke the rebels Shia Muslim supporters in Iran , Russian President Vladimir Putin has simply asked to b kept up to date on developments in the wake of two drone attacks on the major Saudi energy facilities.  Russia believes such incidents will not contribute to the stabilisation of the global energy market, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said. It is safe to assume Russia’s leaders see the incident as an opportunity to benefit from higher crude oil prices.

“The drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure are an alarming event for the oil markets…Of course, such turbulence does not contribute to the stabilisation of the energy market,” Peskov said.

According to Peskov, the Saudi side has not appealed to Russia for assistance in the wake of the attacks, and probably has the necessary capacity to deal with the disruption on their own. “We don’t know whether they need help, but it’s unlikely. They have all the necessary capabilities themselves,” he said.

Peskov said the Kremlin “strongly condemned” Saturday’s incident, if it could be confirmed that the Saudi Aramco facilities were attacked by drones. (He would say that, wouldn’t he?)

EU, UK, France Condemn Attacks

Earlier on Sunday morning, the European Union’s foreign policy office issued a statement condemning the drone attacks, which, the statement read, posed a “real threat” of escalation of the Saudi – Yemeni conflict into full scale war between two regional powers, Saudi Arabia and Iran, and adding that “at a time when tensions in the region are running high, this attack undermines ongoing work at de-escalation and dialogue.” Brussels stands in solidarity with Saudi authorities and the Saudi people, the statement noted.

The UK Foreign Office also condemned the attack in diplomatic terms although certain people in The Treasury must have been rubbing their hands with glee as it becomes economically viable to reopen many North Sea rigs if Brent Crude goes above $80. China too would not be disappointed as Saudi Arabia is a long term ally of the USA, while the smaller oil producers most likely to benefit from the Saudi outage are more friendly to The People’s Republic in its bid to establish the petroyuan as a rival to the Petrodollar for cross border oil trades.

We have reported many times on the merciless bombing of the impoverished Shia Muslim state of Yemen. The conflict started when rebels tried to depose the Saudi – friendly regime and spawned a huge humanitarian crisis which was barely reported in mainstream media, as Saudi air strikes targeted roads, water supplies, sewage systems, hospitals and ports.

Predictably, news of the attack drove financial and commodity traders traders into a collective panic as global markets reopened after the weekend break, with with commodity traders desperately trying to calculate what the upper limit per barrel of oil prices would be (the previous record of $1.09 might hold when markets realise that while Saudi Arabia is still the world’s second biggest producer it is not as dominant as it once was, having been passed by the USA in 2018, and if the Kingdom and Iran decide to neutralise each other, Russia, Venezuela, Kazakhstan, the nations of the Caspian region, Nigeria , Mexico and a host od smaller oil producing nations will be happy to pump more once higher prices make production economically viable. When brent (the highest grade of crude,) reopened for trading in the aftermath of Saturday’s attack on the “world’s most important oil processing plant“, the price immediately exploded to around 20% higher than at close of business on Friday, to a high of $71.95 from the Friday $60.22 close, its biggest jump since 1988.

The hit to stability of supplies will exceed the loss of Iranian oil output in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution, according to data from the U.S. Department of Energy. It will also be worse than the loss of Iraqi and Kuwaiti production in 1990 when Saddam Hussein decided to annex Kuwait and add it to his empire and saw most of the oil infrastructure of both nations destroyed in the ensuing war.

News that the Saudi outage could last for months, rather that the weeks initially predicted suggest this could be just the start. Even if there are no more attacks on Saudi facilities or retaliation by the Saudis on Iran, the supply problem will not be be clear right away. The Saudis can still deliver from reserves for a few weeks but if the outage runs to months as industry sources are now predicting, we can expect crude prices to keep rising until there is relable evidence that output will be restored.

Libya, Syria, Yemen: Sectarian conflict threatens entire Middle East

It’s Time to End The West’s Role in ‘Worst Humanitarian Crisis on the Planet’

It is now eight years since we reported the assault of the FUKUS Axis (France, UK and USA,) on Libya. The regime change action, led from behind by Barack Obama, to overthow the regime of the tyrant Muammar Gaddafi was the first in a spate of such engagements, and its failure to brink western style, LGBT rights obsessed neo – liberal democracy to the country, instead transforming it from Africa’s most prosperous and socially advanced nation ino a failed state in which three rival factions have ever since the death of Gaddafi, claimed to be the legitimate government, has taught the United Nations, NATO, the three main participants in the attack on Libya and the Military – Industrial complex nothing at all (viz the failed egime change war in Syria.)

The Libyan civil war that borke out after the murder of Gadaffi by western backed rebels is now well into its eighth year. The current state of play is that warlord Khalifa Haftar lays siege to Tripoli, the nation’s capital and seat of the United Nations-backed government (which has no influence outside the government compunt in the capital city.

Haftar’s attack has escalated the violence that has plagued the country since the downfall of longtime dictator Gaddafi in the 2011 Arab Spring  which was of course kicked off by the idiotic blethering of Barack Obama who, in an ill advised speech in Cairo, pledged that the USA would support any bunch of savaged who tried to overthrow a tyrant who was not in Washington’s pocket. Haftar’s Libyan National Army, which claims to control over two-thirds of the nation’s territory, most of which is unpopulated destrert in the south, stands accused of dozens of war crimes, including a deadly airstrike on a Tripoli migrant detention center, as many nations around the world allegedly shift allegiances toward the warlord and away from the U.N.-backed government.

Almost 5,000 miles away in Washington, both the Libyan government and the rebels have inked multi-million dollar deals with prominent D.C. lobbyists as they aim to win the backing of American policymakers.

Caught with their pants down by the success of Haftar’s attack the UN recognised government’s PR team, Mercury Public Affairs and Prime Policy Group have added only 17 foreign agents to foreign influence operations for the Libyan government since early May. These include former Rep. John Tanner (D-Tenn.), a longtime stalwart on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and vice chairman of Prime Policy Group, and Edward Cox, former policy advisor to retired Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).

The government agreed to pay Mercury $2 million annually in retaining their services. Prime Policy Group, on the other hand, says it made a verbal agreement to work on a pro-bono basis.

“A unified, democratic Libya is in the best interest of Libyans and furthers the security goals of the United States,” the organization said in a press release.

Haftar’s Lbyan National Army has contracted five foreign agents and operatives at Linden Government Solutions, a Texas firm headed by former Bush administration official Stephen Payne. The arrangement, first reported by the AP, will officially include meetings with U.S. officials, “international coalition building and general public relations.”

Payne has an extensive history with the troubled North African nation. He visited in 2011 with former Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Penn.) before the fall of Gaddafi, helping to negotiate the release of three imprisoned journalists. At the same time, he was bankrolling Weldon’s visit in hopes the former congressman could convince Gaddafi to step down. Payne has close ties to three of Gaddafi’s sons.

The deal with Linden is worth about $2 million. Both parties are believed to have interests in Libyan’s oil business, as Payne and legal counsel Brian Ettinger have deep ties in international energy markets and Haftar recently gained control of El Sharara, Libya’s largest oil field.

The Obama administration fervently backed the Government of National Accord, saying America’s partnership with the government “is in America’s national security interest in our fight against ISIL.” While the U.S. and other major powers have nominally pledged support for Tripoli’s Government of National Accord for years, Haftar’s military success has made many reconsider where their allegiances lie.

The Trump administration appears to be divided on which side to support, with the president reportedly praising the warlord for his victories against Islamist groups and encouraging the Libyan National Army’s march on Tripoli in an April phone call. National Security Advisor John Bolton also encouraged Haftar’s attack, according to diplomatic sources.

Why Would Iran Attack Tankers In The Gulf – They Have Nothing To Gain?

Cui bono? Iran has ‘no reason’ to torpedo oil tankers in Gulf of Oman & ‘go to war’
Oil tanker in The Strait of Hormuz, betwen Iran and the United Arab Emirates (Picture source) Reuters / Hamad I Mohammed

Whenever we at Boggart Blog / The Daily Stirrer read or hear of an international incident that raises tensions between east and west and for which the official news story makes no sense at all, all three of us being the kind of old gits whe had to lean Latin at school, ask ourselves “Cui Bono? (who benefits.)” It was not having to learn Latin that made us so cynical but learning about Marcus Tullius Cicero who always began his analysis of political events in Rome by asking that very question.

So I asked myself “who benefits?” on hearing that two oil tankers had been attacked and damaged, and by the time Washington, with is usual incredible alacrity (think of 9/11, flight MH17 and the alleged chemical weapon attacks in Syria for starters,) had accused Iran of being responsible for the attacks I was aware of certain  significant factors not mentioned in mainstream media reports.Despite the lurid accusations from Washington, led by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who accused Iran of attacking the two ships and linking the latest incident to two other recent tanker attacks, drones hitting Saudi oil pumps, and a missile hitting a Saudi airport earlier this week. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was quick to pin the blame for the incident on Iran, claiming that the Islamic Republic was “lashing out” in frustration over Washington’s draconian sanctions regime.

There is absolutely no evidence that the government of Iran is involved. Lack of evidence does not necessarily prove innocence of course, but unsubstantiated accusations do not prove guilt so we should keep our minds open to other possibilities   But if nt Iran then who did this and why? And what does that say will happen next? Logically, it was either Iran, or the US, or a third party:

Iran is suffocating under US sanctions, it is a known instigator of such actions via proxies, and has been threatening the EU that it will walk away from the nuclear deal if they won’t help it break the US economic stanglehold. An attack like this would be incredibly stupid (as stupid as Syria’s President Assad launching illegal chemical weapons attacks on rebel held areas when his forces were on the brink of crushing the IsIS rebellion,) … unless they are desperate enough to give The White House an excuse to attack, hoping the Trump adminidtration will back down with the 2020 elections looming and the president’s core voters being averse to further humiliations in the middle east.  If that is the case there will be more provocations even as Iran calls this all “beyond suspicious”, “economic terrorism”, and “sabotage diplomacy”.

The US is divided between neo-cons champing at the bit to take on Tehran, war-averse Trump and the isolationist voters who put him in power, and a Pentagon now looking at China and Russia as the real threat. CENTCOM has said a war with Iran is not in the US strategic interest – and after the humiliation of Syria it clearly isn’t. Donald Trump is no fool, no matter what bitter Hillary Clinton supporters say about him. Sure he’s a loudmouth, an egomaniac, and a crass, bombastic bully, but he is not stupid enough to order an attack on Iran, a far more militarily powerful nation than Syria, and equally good buddies with China and Russia.

Third parties ‘state – actors’ to use the words of Secretary Pompeo, are in short supply. Mainstream media will no doubt follow murky social media to point a finger at the Saudis and Israelis but would either want to precipitate a major regional war that would drag them in or would they prefer to sit back and watch sanctions destroy Iran’s economy?

‘Why would Iran do it?’

Tehran has nothing to gain from attacking the oil tankers, defense analyst and retired Lt. General Amjad Shoaib said.

“Why would Iran do it? They have no reason to go to war and they have no reason to escalate the situation,” he stressed.

Tehran has adamantly denied any involvement. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif described the incident as highly suspicious given that it occurred on the day Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Tehran, according to mainstram reports to act as a mediator in a bid to ease tensions between Iran and the USA. He added that Washington’s evidence-free accusations are designed to “sabotage” Iran’s diplomatic efforts.

According to reports from India, Iran and Japan however though the possibility of Japanese mediation has been discussed there is no plan for Abe to mediate between Iran and the U.S.” ISNA reported.

A member of the Iran’s foreign policy committee also made similar remarks, saying Abe’s trip is not aimed at playing a mediatory role between Iran and the United States.

“The aim of the visit is to expand bilateral relations,” Alaeddin Boroujerdi told Mehr news agency on Monday. “In the years that followed the [Islamic] Revolution, Iran and Japan have enjoyed good relations.”

Boroujerdi said. “The talk of mediation is mere speculation and is not true.”

According to Boroujerdi, Israel is afraid of Japan’s cooperation with Iran and therefore is making efforts to undermine this development.

Though the official line is that the tankers were damaged by mines, Japanese firm, Kokuka Sangyo Co, said on Friday that its tanker had been attacked by two “flying objects” but that there was no damage to the ship’s cargo of methanol.

Added to that is the fact of Iran’s rescue operation which lifted 44 sailors from the two tankers, ‘Front Altair’ and ‘Kokuka Courageous, which could feasibly have been an attempt to divert suspicion after the attack on  the two vessels. Similarly pictures produced by Washington purporting to show Iranian military personnel removing an unexploded mine from one of the tankers begs the question why would Iran do such a thing if it was behind the attack.

Kourosh Shamlou, an attorney and Middle East specialist commented that it would be completely illogical for Iran to quite literally torpedo such a historic summit, especially since doing so would play into the hands of Washington’s anti-Iran hawks.

“I’m an attorney. You have to know for whom a crime is beneficial. We can see the geopolitical situation of Iran and the US in the Persian Gulf. We can say that the Iranians are not going to torpedo a ship that will lead to the Americans attacking them. It’s going to give the Americans an excuse to attack Iran. So it cannot be the Iranians.”

In fact, the incident has already had negative economic consequences for Iran, Hamed Mousavi, professor of political science at the University of Tehran and visiting professor at Carleton University, noted on RT.

“Iran’s currency lost five percent of its value today just because of talk of escalating tensions as well as perhaps the possibility of war. I think right now Iran wants to de-escalate the situation with the United States,” said Mousavi.

Conspiracy theory’

It’s not surprising that media outlets are dutifully relaying Pompeo’s accusations against Iran without questioning his logic – or asking for evidence, commented political analyst Shabbir Razvi. He has a point, that is exactly what they did in the case of all Assad’s alleged atrocities, the shooting down of Flight MH17 over Ukraine, the Boston marathon bombers and most other recent outrages.

Razvi stressed that without evidence, it would be irresponsible of Washington – or anyone else – to put forward theories about who was responsible for the attack. However, there’s at least one country that has a documented history of fabricating scenarios to justify military action, Shamlou noted.

“All of a sudden, an accident happens, and [the United States] starts saying ‘it’s the Vietnamese, it’s the Iraqis, it’s the Iranians.’ And then they have a legitimate cause for their people to attack.”

A Non State Actor?

Now I am as sceptical about blaming the USA for every mishap as I am about blaming Russia, China, Israel, Iran or Bogmondorovia (I just made up that name,) for everything that happens. People in Washington have said the attack was too sophisticated and too well organised to be the work of terrorists, only governments would have the human and material resources to organise and execute such an operation. But are they?

On Monday last week, crude oil prices tanked to below $50 per barrel, and driven down by the threat of global recession, some frankly silly commitments by desperate politicians to phase out fossil fuels by 2050, the effects of the esacalating trade war between the USA and China, a less developed threat of a trade war between the USA and EU, threatened to go as low as $40 per barrel. This caused quite a lot of consternation in oil producing states and also among oil extraction companies and processing companies.

And oil companies are the largest customer of paramilitary private security contractors. Oil companies have the finances to mount very sophisticated operations while paramilitary security contractors, recruiting from the elite forces of US, British, French, Australian and who knows what other armies have the personnel capable of carrying out sophisticated covert operations. So on Monday the price of crude oil bombs, Tuesday sees panic in the oil markets and among oil producing nations and oil companies, on Wednesday two tankers get hit in one of the busiest waterways on the planet, a vital route for oil from the Gulf States to the west. And almost immediately oil prices jump, wiping out recent losses.

Join up the dots as they saying goes. Cone on, it isn’t hard – there are only two dots to join. And if you get stuck ask yourself “Cui Bono?” Who benefits from the threat of war in the world’s largest oil producing nations, whose profit margins will be boosted by an oil famine, whose future prospects would be boosted by reminding the world, amid all the talk of sustainable, clean energy, just how dependent on oil our civiliation is?

Is World War Three Really Kicking Off This Time?

The airstrikes by a US led coalition that killed many Syrian soldiers fighting for the legitimate government of Bashar al Assad against the terrorist forces of ISIS has raised the level of hostile rhetoric between the USA / NATO coalition and the Russia / China / Iran alliance. The likelihood of war seemed to have receded through the summer, after it seemed possible early this year, that one stray shell or bullet could spread the war beyond the middle east.

Only 5 Percent Of Russian Air Strikes Hitting Islamic, British Defence Secretary Lies

After an amazing outburst from the delusional Brack Obama left the United Nations General Assembly in stunned silence because Obama has accused Russia and China of all the recent breaches of international law of which the USA is demonstably guilty, the propaganda departments of western governments seem to have totally lost their grip on reality.

Have US tactics only helped to make ISIS more powerful?/b>

We have questioned the US led efforts to defeat ISIS in the middle east many times, pointing out that every time the western alliance steps up opposition to the establishment of a news Islamic Caliphate, Islamic State seem to get stronger. ‘Conspiracy Theorists’, our critics yell. So let’s look at opinion from around the world that concurs with ours.

EU and US talk of war with Russia

The European People’s Party (EPP) the largest political group in the European Parliament, nominated Luxemourgeois nonentity and alcoholic (allegely) Jean-Claude Juncker as President of the European Commission. The party has the support of some of Europe’s most powerful leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Made up largely of centre Social Democrat parties and centre right Christian Democrats they command an automatic majority in any vote taken by the European Parliament and are unerringly federalist, globalist and anything but democratic.

And they are unerringly supportive of America’s efforts to start a war with Russia.

“The time of talk and persuasion with Russia is over,” MEP and Vice-President of the European People’s Party (EPP) Jacek Saryusz-Wolski told a meeting of the European Parliament on Tuesday, 21 April, “Now it’s time for a tough policy, a realistic policy, and concentration on defence and security, because the eastern flank of the EU feels vitally, existentially threatened.”

EU To Reduce Dependence On US Dollar As Sanctions Hit Trade With Iran

Source: https://eaworldview.com/

Plans to reduce European Union dependence on the US dollar have been rumoured for a while now, as China’s alternative to the Petrodollar continues to gain strength. The EU is not signing up to the move by Russia, China and the other BRICS bloc nations to replace the dollar but are thinking involvement with the emerging economies bid to break US economic hegemony will improve the 27 member Union’s ability to run an independent foreign policy without having to fear US bullying through sanctions for opposing Washinton’s attempts to dominate global political and economic events. The EU plan was unveiled on Wednesday by the European commission.

The proposal has gained support among European Union member states as companies in EU countries have felt presured to withdraw investments from Iran by the threat of punitive secondary sanctions from the US for any nation which permits its citizens or business community to trade with the Shi’ite Muslim theocracy.

The EU, unlike the US, wants to maintain the nuclear deal with Iran signed in 2015, but needs to deliver on its side of the bargain by increasing trade with Tehran. Less likely to be discussed in mainstream media is that European arms manufacturers, particularly those in Britain, Germany, France and, surprisingly perhaps, Sweden, will benefit greatly from a new arms race if they are in a position to supply both sides.

Iranian rulers are becoming impatient as the EU strives to create a financial mechanism to shield European exporters and importers from the effects of US sanctions on corporations, banks and individuals that continue to trade with Iran. US secondary sanctions can be applied on any European firm with links to the US market. I find this rather surprising as back in the 1960s when I studied economics, it was common knowledge that jurisdictions with lax trade regulation regimes like Panama or The Bahamas could be used to obfuscate paper trails and evade sanctions, tariffs and taxes.

The commission is perhaps reluctant to use Gibraltar’s port facilities for trans — shipping goods bound eventually for Iran because of the uncertain position of The Rock post Brexit. Instead Brussels is focusing on increasing the use of the euro in energy markets by creating a financial vehicle to facilitate settlement of oil contracts in the single currency, thus bypassing sanctions by avoiding any dollar transactions. Along with other such bilateral agreement systems, the plan is part of a longer-term move to “de-dollarise” the world economy.

Measures included in the EU policy involve using the euro as default currency in energy contracts agreed between EU member states and non-EU countries, as well as the creation of euro-denominated price benchmarks for crude oil. The EU is one of the world’s largest energy importers.

The commission press release also suggests the EU must develop “a full range of trustworthy interest rate benchmarks” in and a fully integrated instant payment system acceptable in all financial markets. The bloc will also seek to develop the role of the euro in foreign exchange markets.

In launching the long-term plan, EU economic affairs commissioner, Pierre Moscovici, said: “A wider use of the euro in the global economy yields important potential for better protecting European citizens and companies against external shocks and making the international finance and monetary system more resilient.”

The commissioner added these plans came “at a time where the recent global trends, the emergence of new economic powers along with the development of new technologies are supporting a potential shift towards a more diversified and multipolar system of several global currencies”.

Responding to the EU announcement an Iranian official said:
“Based on the news I recently received and was confirmed by a European commissioner, from now on, the EU is going to ditch the US dollar and just use the euro in the financial transactions of all European oil deals with other countries,” said Iran’s nuclear chief, Ali Akbar Salehi, on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said the amount of these transactions is more than €300 billion. “Previously, the EU used to pay 85 percent of the money for the oil it purchased from other countries in US dollars, but now with this new mechanism, all the money will be paid in euros,” he said.

Once the mechanism takes effect, the US dollar will be isolated as a global currency, and the US will no longer be able to use dollars in the current dominating way, Salehi added.

His comments came one day after the EU commission presented its plan to reduce the dollar’s overwhelming dominance of the global economy and to strengthen the role of the euro, particularly for energy transactions. There will be a lnee jerk reaction from the left of US politics, to blame Donald Trump for this development, the EU have already accused the Trump Administration of weaponising the reserve currency, although that is unfair because the US has used its position as holder of the reserve currency as a political weapon since the 1960s. In fact the move towards de-dolarisation, led by China, Russia and Iran, has been going on for some years now, the initial moves having been made early in the Obama era, though even before Obama took office there was widespread dissatisfaction with the way the USA used dollar dominance to influence political developments outside its borders. It has alredy attracted many trading partners, perhaps US economic belligerence is an attempt to combat this. If so it is the wrong approach.

European capitals have become increasingly frustrated with the global dominance of the dollar as a reserve currency, which hands the United States unparalleled diplomatic and economic power in a globalized world. This hostility was exacerbated when economic sanctions imposed on Russia after it’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Many European nations were hit harder by those sanctions than Russia.

A Profound Danger To The Dollar’s Reserve Status?

This blog and our larger sibling The Daly Stirrer have since 2012 been following moves in the international community, led by Russia and China to replace the US dollar as the global reserve currency, a status that has prevailed since 1974 when the USA concluded an agreement with Saudi Arabia, then totally dominant as the world’s largest oil producer, that all oil trades would be carried out in dollars – this was the birth of the petrodollar.

This agreement has since then given the USA a huge advantage over its trading partners, but the balance of power in the world has shifted with the break up of the Soviet Union, the liberalisation of China and the emergence of China as an economic power and of Russia as a major supplier of oil and gas.

Official Report On Douma Gas Attack Discredits Warmongers’s Propaganda.

One who deceives will always find those who allow themselves to be deceived,”
Niccolo Machiavelli

syria-chemical-attack-douma-1302933“I was lured with cookies and then sprayed with water,” says alleged child victim of the Douma chemical attack (Picture: Express news )

The thoughts of the Renaissance-era’s most famous political philosopher’s are often as relevant today as when he first published them in the sixteenth century and the above quotation describe perfectly the politically motivated allegation that Syrian forces loyal to President Bashar al Assad launched a chemical weapon attack on the city of Douma, 10km northeast of Damascus, with nerve gas on April 7, 2018.

More concerning perhaps than the fabrication of the story by Salafist (Islamic extremist) groups (possibly in collaboration with the intelligence agencies of western governments,)  and the ulterior motive behind it, to provoke armed conflict betwen military superpowers, was the readiness of western political establishments and media to believe it. The ISIS / Al Nusra rebels were at the time struggling to hang on to territory that had been occupied by their Islamic State fundamentalist rebellion for seven years, and was under siege by the Syrian Arab Army with Iranian and Russian support. Assad and his allies were on the brink of victory, they had absolutely nothing to gain from an act that could only arouse hostility in the rest of the world.

And yet, apart from the usual chorus of claims from alt_media sources that it was a false flag incident there was little analysis from the mainstream news organisations to point out the inconsistencies in the official narrative.

The last ditch effort to outrage world opinion and put the West on a collision course with Russia, Iran and probably China almost worked when the Trump administration, supported by France’s Emmanuel Macron and Britain’s Theresa May, decided to launch a missile strike against Syria on the back of it.

The last time the major nuclear powers had been so close to direct conflict was the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The fact that the attack came after years of US / NATO provocations of Russia, from the blatant breach of a treaty signed at the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991, in which NATO and the EU agreed they would not seek to recruit former Soviet Union states (e.g. Lithuania, Ukraine) or Warsaw Pact members such as Poland and Hungary to western economic and military alliances. In return Russia would allow those states full independence to transform themselves into democracies.

Now many former Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact members have full membership of NATO and the EU, with others seeking to join. Further provocations have included the CIA engineered destabilisation of Ukraine, the imposition of economic sanctions and military interventions in third world nations.

In the world view of neocons, neo – liberals cultural Marxists and other regime-change enthusiasts the world is reduced to a gunfight-at-the-OK-corral simplicity in which non-Western nations, the guys in black hats, and the western powers which like to think of themselves as liberal democracies though in reality they are corporate meritocracies, wear white hats. People, individuals and human communities are of no more significance than toy cowboys in a child’s game. In this game however, players are manoeuvring for wealth and power and it is real lives they sacrifice, not plastic toys.

Independent commentators have always maintained that the rebellion in Syria was backed by the USA, NATO and Saudi Arabia. Syria is Russia’s only ally with a Mediterranean coastline and geopolitical strategists see the fulfillment of Saudi Arabia’s long term ambition to build an oil and gas pipeline from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean via Jordan, Syria and Turkey as a way to undermine Russia’s oil trade with Europe.

It was due only to the astute leadership of Vladimir and the Russian government to tolerate a loss of face by offering no response to what was undoubtedly an act of war by Washington and its allies against an ally of Russia and China, that armed conflict, with the possibility of escalation to nuclear warfare, was avoided.

Instead it was agreed that both sides would accept the result of an inquiry conducted by the internationally recognised Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons, (OPCW).

Now the initial findings of the OPCW inspectors have been published in an interim report, based on the results of its on-site investigations into claims made mainly by British and French political figures and reported in the most lurid terms by mainstream media that a nerve gas attack took place in Douma on April 7, and it makes grim reading for the army of warmongers on both the left and right of the political spectrum as it does for those with financial interests in the military / industrial complex and the strange, insubstantial creatures who hate capitalism but yearn for a global, authoritarian government.  Many left wing ideologues who’ve made a career out of defending the indefensible, and their brainwashed followers as going to end up looking extremely foolish after asserting that there was irrefutable evidence that Assad’s forces carried out the attack, just as they did after previous allegations of war crimes by ‘fascist dictators’ who stood in the way of US / EU economic hegemony.

The short snippet below, from the interim report, shows it will make very grim reading for those who urged direct western intervention in the Syrian war, and will in the long term damage the case for economic imperialism.

“The results show that no organophosphorous nerve agents or their degradation products [emphasis added] were detected in the environmental samples or in the plasma samples taken from alleged casualties.”

NO NERVE AGENTS? The gas attack on the strength of which we were meant to go to war was not even a false flag, but a pure propaganda lie aimed at starting a war that would have killed millions in order to remove a dictator who according to the evidence we have, is supported by more than half his people, not because they think his authoritarian government is wonderful but because they know, as we all do now after seeing news coverage of the atrocities inflicted by ISIS and Al Nusra rebels on innocent people, that the government most likely to take over if Assad fell would be more brutal, more theocratic and, in every way, worse.

People who have supported efforts to impose ‘freedom and democracy’ i.e. American style meritocracy on Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Ukraine and all the way back to Vietnam in the 1960s, in their orgies of self righteousness and virtue signalling forget that in a truly free nation, the people should be able to choose their own course into the future. Freedom to accept the model imposed by external powers is not freedom at all.

When Winston Churchill, a dyed-in-the-wool colonialist, expressed the opinion  that, “In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies,” he exposed the way propaganda (fake news to employ the currently fashionable term,) has always been used to mislead the public and manipulate opinion in favour of  perpetual wars waged by the West in the interests of maintaining the elite’s grip on power and ensuring the bulk
of wealth remains concentrated in the hands of a few powerful families.

Nigeria – burning its oil wealth (Picture: Zero Hedge )

Nigeria was recently rated the poorest country in the world based on the numers living in extreme poverty, moving ahead of India, in spite of the african nation’s oil revenues which amount to several hundred billion dollars over the last decade, a watchdog group has revealed.

The Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, as quoted by local media, said Nigeria had earned some US$484 billion from oil in the last 10 years, but the state of its population and infrastructure has only deteriorated. According to the organization, the oil earnings were sufficient to meet the need for an annual US$15-billion investment in infrastructure for the next 33 years, but the funds were not used to do that.

Meanwhile, in its latest report on poverty, the Brookings Institution estimated that the number of people living in extreme poverty in Nigeria had grown to 87 million people, versus 73 million in India.

According to Brookings, poverty in India is falling while in Nigeria, it’s growing at a rate of six people per minute. What’s more, India’s total population is above 1 billion while Nigeria’s is 198 million, meaning those living in extreme poverty are a much higher portion of the population in the oil-rich state.

Lower GDP is one of the factors accounting for the growing poverty despite substantial oil revenues. Nigeria was hard hit by the 2014 oil price collapse and its economic growth slowed from 6.3 percent in that year to 1.9 percent for the first quarter of 2018, Vanguard reports. What’s more, the daily notes, what money has been borrowed to spend on infrastructure in a bid to restart the economy after the price collapse has been very far from sufficient to achieve this goal.

Nigeria is also plagued by very high crime rates that are certainly not helping matters, and neither is the displacement of people from the countryside to the cities. And of course, like anywhere in Africa, corruption in government and public services is a cancer which prevents progress.

Green Energy Scam Exposed Again

9 June, 2018

This has been a terrible week for the renewable energy business.

Across the world solar energy share prices have crashed. This was caused by a sudden and unexpected decision by China, the world’s biggest solar manufacturer and user, to rein in subsidies.

According to Caixin Global:

China has abruptly put the brakes on solar power subsidies, seeking to stem overcapacity in a sector that has benefited for years from government incentives.

The move caught many in the industry off guard.

The government won’t grant subsidies to any new ordinary solar projects this year. For those that are being built, the incentives will be cut by 0.05 yuan (0.8 U.S. cents) per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

Solar stocks have fallen across the board by double digits. It’s uncertain when they will recover.

It hasn’t been a good week for wind energy either. In Britain, the industry has become a national joke because for seven days its wind turbines stood still and produced no electricity. Great news for all the birds and bats they would otherwise have sliced and diced; no problem for the renewables industry troughers who still get their rich subsidies whether the wind blows or not. But definitely unfortunate PR for an industry which would prefer everyone not to notice one of wind energy’s main problems: it’s intermittent – which means that a) it’s not always there when you need it and so b) it requires constant back up from more reliable fossil fuel on standby.

We shouldn’t laugh, except actually we must. Otherwise guys like this will win the day.

Nuclear power – including existing plants – needs to be remunerated for the zero-carbon power it produces. That must be kept separate from pork-barrel subsidies to dying coal plants. And nuclear lobbyists, please understand: you need to make friends with renewables.

Liebreich – founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance – has done extremely well out of the climate change scare industry. That’s why he can afford to jet freely around the world (not first class, he insists in a subsequent tweet: just economy to Dublin to catch Gorillaz on Skype – as you do…)

So he is revealed as virtue-signalling hypocrite, happy to lecture the rest of us about the need to sit shivering in our cold, dark houses and go everywhere by bike, while his environmental purity does not dissuade him from hopping on a plane from London to Dulin (“not first class,” he tells us, as if it makes a difference to the fuel burned. Simultaneously with his stacking up the air miles and extending his carbon footprint like an Al Gore-style boss he is railing about plastic pollution, the fashionable environmentalist cause of the week, by complaining about artificial plants in the airport departure lounge.

The global warming industry – the Climate Industrial Complex as some are starting to call it – has been estimated as being worth an annual $1.5 trillion, but that was three years ago and like john Steinbeck’s monster and all others of the same genus, it has to grow or else it dies.

Like a lot of renewables advocates, Liebreich has grown rich on taxpayers money from his support for environment scams, making more money than had he been a skeptical scientist carrying out independent research based on real world evidence and not results from mathematical models fed ‘adjusted data,’  or a journalist writing about what a huge con the global warming industry is.

Liebreich gives the game away in a piece published recently about the way forward for global energy industry. He addresses the bogus  dilemma that he claims oil companies face: do they abandon fossil fuel early and move into renewables; or do they extract the last remaining value they can?

This is, of course, the purest green propaganda masquerading as dispassionate business advice. A business advice it is pure bollocks. Most Big Oil company CEOs now, wearing their best shit – eating grins, pay lip service to the Church of Scienceology dogma of wind and mirrors and apologise for the pure evil of their sticky black gold. Behind the masks of course they are happily aware of the reality that renewables still provide a tiny percentage of global energy consumption and that even by 2040 – if you believe BP’s  highly suspect projections, : fossil fuels are still going to provide well over half global energy consumption.

Here is the key passage in which Liebreich gives the game away, admitting that sustainables do not provide a realistic alternative to fossil fuels :

There is no inherent dishonor or immorality in pursuing a Sunset Ride. Even the most ardent climate activist is going to be a user of fossil fuels and petrochemical products for many more decades, and no one with integrity can demonize products whose demand they themselves drive. Dishonor and immorality lie only in attempts to obfuscate or delay the global transition to clean energy and transport, either through lobbying and misinformation or through a failure to strive for the highest standards within one’s own operations. Oil and gas companies need to lead on eliminating fugitive emissions and flaring, and to act with transparency and honor around the world.

In that “dishonour and immorality” bit lies the dirty big secret of the renewables industry which must be protected at all costs by elitist Omerta. Energy from wind and solar power are not reliable, sometimes the wind does not blow sufficiently strongly (or sufficently steadily – wind turbines can’t handle sudden gusts,) and there are cloudy and rainy days even in southern Spain or south California which mean that while geenies in the UK are crowing about ONE DAY in the summer of 2017 when more of our energy “came from green sources” they carefully omit to mention that most of the energy from coal, gas and oil fuelled plants was going down to earth because such equipment cannot be shut down or brought back to optimum speed at the flick of a switch. The same amount of carbon dioxide was being emitted, but the fuel burned was simply wasted.

China’s Oil Futures Market Gains Momentum

“WTF has China’s new oil futures market to do with us Minds punters?” you might well ask.

It is in fact going to affect us all not just commodities traders, oil speculators and hedge fund managers. The thing is the Chinese (and their BFFs The Russians and Iranians did not just set up this venture because they fancied dabbling in the oil trade.

The launch of the gold backed Petroyouan on the Shanghai financial markets is the culmination of several years manoeuvreing by China and its allies to create a rival trading system to the Petrodollar which has dominated international trade for over forty years. I reported on the news HERE and in several other posts.

Few people are aware of how reliant the US economy has become on the position of the US$ as the global reserve currency. This is because mainstream media never reports on it and TV pundits dare not mention it for fear of losing their lucrative gigs as talking heads on TV. I have talked about it since the very beginning, when Saddam Hussein decided he didn’t need the Petrodollar, modern technology could trade his oil for any currency he fancied. And we all know what happened to him.

Nothing will change overnight, or next month or for several months, but gradually we will see a further shift of economic power from west to east. And that will affect prices, jobs, our standards of living and much more
