Though not widely reported (well the proceedings were boring,) a number of parliamentary hearings in the European Parliament and the elected assemblies of member nations, have investigated Facebook’s user data breach scandal involving the data thieves Cambridge Analytica.  European Union MEPs, including those from Britain have called for a full audit of the social media company and an overhaul of E.U. competition law.

According to a report by TechCrunch that following hearings relating to the Cambridge Analytica case which saw the user data of millions of Facebook users accessed after the firm persuaded users to sign up to an app that not only mined data on their personal computers, but on the systems of all their Facebook friends and contacts too, the European Union parliament’s civil liberties committee called for an update to privacy and competition rules in order to deal with “the digital reality” of the internet era. The committee also encouraged other E.U. groups to look into the “possible monopoly” of social media platforms and tech firms, although monopoly strikes us as the wrong term. Facebook derserve to be sanctioned for many things, but being too successful is not one of them.

Last week, Giovanni Buttarelli, the E.U.’s data protection supervisor said that closer collaboration between the E.U.’s Competition and Commission and privacy regulators is needed to control the ethically challenges tech giants of Silicon \Valley soon  and legislative bodies need to up their game and radically improve their oversight mechanisms to deal with the growing issue of data abuse by tech firms. E.U. antitrust regulators in Germany and France have also been investigating Google and Facebook’s online advertising duopoly.

The European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE)  has also called for greater accountability and transparency surrounding “algorithmic-processed data by any actor, be it private or public.” LIBE committee chair Claude Moraes has suggested in the past that the Facebook data breach situation could provide the base from which develop updates to the E.U.’s ePrivacy rules.

The LIBE committee called for an audit of the advertising industry on social media in a resolution this week, supporting a similar call by the U.K.’s data protection watchdog, the ICO, which previously issued the maximum fine possible under U.K. data protection law against Facebook over the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Facebook commented on the E.U.’s most recent action saying:

We are grateful to the European Parliament for the number of opportunities to come and explain the changes we have made to our platform. We are working relentlessly to ensure the transparency, safety and security of people who use Facebook. Over the last months we have developed sophisticated systems that combine technology and people to prevent election interference on our services. This is part of a broader challenge for us at Facebook to be more proactive about protecting our community from harm and taking a broader view of our responsibility overall.

Further pressure from the E.U. just adds to previous calls in the USA, Europe, Japan, Australia and India for social media regulation which continues to appear to be inevitable in the near future.

Algorithms Are No Better At Telling The Future Than Tarot Cards Or A Crystal Ball
“An increasing number of businesses are investing in advanced technologies that can help them forecast the future of their workforce and gain a competitive advantage”. It’s true, every day we see more bollocks being written by people who believe that ‘Data Science’, ‘Artificial Intelligence,’ and ‘Big Data’, machines can be relied on to make better decisions than humans, and soon computers will surpass us in actual intelligence.

Trump Warns Facebook, Twitter And Google To Tread Carefully

Donald Trump may have failed in his bid to take on the Military – Industrial Complex, The Pentagon, The CIA and The State Department, which would have been a formidable task for any US president, even one with the whole of his party and a solid majority of the country behind him, but his bid to challenge the stranglehold of globalists (aka progressive liberals) on the media and in particular the left leaning near – monoplies of digital media, amoral, power crazed organisations like Google, Facebook ans Twitter, look likely to have better outcomes for lovers of free speech and individual liberty.

President Trump yesterday reiterated threats against Facebook, Twitter and Google with new comments from the Oval Office, saying the social media platforms are “treading on very, very troubled territory and they have to be careful.”

“I think Google has really taken advantage of a lot of people and I think that’s a very serious thing and it’s a very serious charge,” Trump told reporters following a meeting with the president of FIFA. “They better be careful because they can’t do that to people.”

Meanwhile, free speech activists have petitioned the White House to encourage Trump to “request that Congress pass legislation prohibiting social media platforms from banning users for First Amendment-protected speech.”

The petition, stating that “The power to block lawful content should be in the hands of individual users – not Mark Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey.” can be fopund at Petitions.whitehouse.gov

Earlier in the day, Google responded to an accusation by Trump over Twitter that they’re “rigging” search results against him, providing as evidence a “Trump News” search which showed predominantly “left” media publications popping up in the search results.

Google replied “Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology” As sombody who has always been considered slighty left of centre on most issues (a classical libera,) Google replied “Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology”I would say from my experience of comparing Google results which those of independent search operators and metasearch tools anybody who believes that also believes in Santa claus and The Tooth Fairy.

Perhaps Google can salvage a little credibility by explaining why Trump’s picture is just about the only thing that appears when one does a Google image search for the word “idiot”? And while Google had visited the Obama White House over 230 times in seven years, we wonder how many times they’ve visited since Trump took office?

A comparison of results from an image search on “idiot” from Google and DuckDuckGo Bear in mind that search results can vary from user to user and according to what’s ‘trending’.

Fan Bois Mad For Apple’s New “FaceID” But Is It A Powerful New Mass Surveillance Tool

On Tuesday, Apple revealed their newest phone. The new line was anticipated by Apple users and is another cult favorite. But many are rightly skeptical of the “FaceID” feature.

Another Privacy Abuse Scandal Brewing For Big Tech

App developers working for ad agencies that use Google ad servers are scanning your email to improve ad targeting.

Google, not a corporation that ever takes ethics seriously, even by corporate standards, made a pledge  about this time last year that it would stop its servers scanning the inboxes of Gmail users for information to personalize advertisements, hypocritically stating that it was committed to protecting data  so users could “remain confident that Google will keep users privacy and security paramount ”

However the internet search and advertising giant continues to let hundreds of outside software developers scan the inboxes of millions of Gmail users who signed up for email-based services offering shopping price comparisons, automated travel-itinerary planners or other tools. Google does little to police those developers, who train their computers—and, in some cases, employees—to read their users’ emails, a Wall Street Journal investigation has found.

How Google Destroyed the Internet
The idea of the internet was that it would be a communications tool that freed information by making all public domain documents, libraries and archives accessible for everyone. Unfortunately the corporate monopoly men of Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Facebook and political control freaks had other ideas. They also understood the technolgy while the hippies and liberals ignored professionals warnings that internet systems would become a perfect toool of censorship.
