Afghanistan Debacle:Biden Illusion Crumbles to Dust

After more than four days of silence concerning the Afghanistan disaster, President Joe Biden addressed the nation and confirmed all of the worst suspicions of his critics. And the federal government finally gets around to publicly discussing the need for COVID-vaccine boosters this autumn, as this newsletter suggested last week.

From 11:15 a.m., Thursday, August 12, to a little past 4 p.m., Monday, August 16, President Joe Biden did not appear in public. For a little more than four days, as the situation in Afghanistan deteriorated and Americans witnessed the horrific sight of desperate Afghans clinging to planes and falling to their deaths, the president offered no explanation beyond a terse, released written statement and a photo of the president that neglected to crop out the teleconference screens labeled “CIA” and “Doha Station.”

When the president did finally speak, he read from a teleprompter for 20 minutes, took no questions, and barely acknowledged that he had assured Americans, at the beginning of July, that no part of this disaster would unfold this way. The lone admission was a vague, passive-voice, “this did unfold more quickly than we had anticipated,” a strong nominee for the Disingenuous Public Relations Spin Hall of Fame.

Biden instead relitigated the decision to withdraw from Afghanistan. He made no defense of how that withdrawal is proceeding, because in large part, it is indefensible.

Biden’s account of his decision-making acknowledged that the Taliban intimidated us — or perhaps more specifically, him — and that we sought no further conflict with them … Continue reading >>>

Has Biden’s Afghan Surrender Handed The Future To China
The abrupt and ill – considered withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan ordered by President Joe (Dementia Man) Biden and the susequent return to power of Islamic fundamentalist The Taliban hands control of the vast Afghan litium reserves to China and is a blow to the green agenda of the G7 nations

Western Crimes In The Middle East
We have been reporting and analyzing the conflic in Afghanistan since 2001 and our every prediction has come true, from endless war in Afghanistan with the USA now having backed off it’s pledge of total withdrawal as it is clear that one US troops are gone, the Taliban will be back in control in days, to Libya’s becoming a fragmented, lawless, failed state in the wake of Gaddafi’s downfall and the continued threat of Syria’s civil conflict spreading to engulf the entire region.

Another Obama Sponsored Genocide – not Alawi or Christians In Syria but Yazidi in Iraq.
While the west has been distracted by events in Gaza and Ukraine, and the neo – fascist ‘left’ have suddenly discovered the joys of anti Russianism and anti Semitism, the FUKUS axis sponsored genocidists of ISIS have discovered another inoffensive minority to exterminate now that the Syriac Christians have fled.

Want A Good Laugh? Try This: Tony Blair Says Invasion Of Iraq Did Not Trigger Current Crisis
Iraq under the very unpleasant (to western minds) dictator Saddam Hussein was the most prosperous and secular on muslim states in the middle east until saddam fell out with the USA. The first Gulf War of 1991 and sanctions that followed ruined Iraqi prosperity but the people remained loyal to Saddam until the Bush administration, aided by the British Labour government of Tony Blair invaded Iraq and overthrew Saddam. Since then the nation has slid into dystopian chaos and has now broken up into tribal and sectarian mini states

Iraq’s borders are crumbling: this is a disaster for western foreign policy
It was inevitable. I started commentating on world affairs in 2005, a few years before The Daily Stirrer was set up. TRhe Iraq conflict was still going on at that time, George W Bush was boasting ‘mission accomplished’ and the Islamist militias were positioning themselves for the moment the Americans withdrew. Bush’s even more inept successor withdrew occupying troops for purely political reasons and since then Iraq has slid into the grip of fanatics who would establish an Islamic theocracy.

War On Syria: Standoff Shows America Is No Longer The Global Superpower
So what’s happening in Syria you might well ask? After the FUKUS Axis intervention plans were thwarted by Russia and China there seems to have been a news blackout although the devastating civil war continues to devastate Syria. The really big news however (bigger that J-Lo’s arse) is that America has quietly been demoted from its position as main global military power.

Turkey And Syria On The Brink Of Full Scale War It has been coming a long time but it seems Syria and Turkey are on the brink of full scale war. The Daily Stirrer did warn the Arab spring would end in regional war when Obama first stirred up the Muslim Brotherhood and other anti western elements of Islam

If the conflict in Syria, currently showing signs of spreading to Turkey, Iraq and Kurdistan were to escalate into a regional war, a proxy for east and west to butt heads without sustaining too much domestic damage, is Egypt likely to take advantage of the distraction and

Has Everybody Forgotten Obama’s War
In the rush to find an excuse for military intervention in Syria mainstream news media seem to have forgotten Obama’s war in Afghanistan, the one he said would define his Presidency. Having just passed the grim milestone of 2000 American dead and with the allies no nearer to defeating the Taliban it does actually define Obama’s years in power. Lost in the wilderness and going nowhere.

Has Everybody Forgotten Obama’s War
The American military machine has just chalked up the grim statistic of its 2,000th fatality since America troops first surged into Afganistan to defeat “insurgents” whose families had lived in that country for many generations. The invasion was justifed in the aftermath of September 11 by the myth that Afghanistan was a …

Obama Talks The Talk But Dare Not Visit Afghanistan In Daylight
Todays mainstream news papers and broadcast bulletins are full of the Superhero Barack Obama’s daredevil visit to Afghanistan. The man who liberated Libya single handed and took out Osama Bin Laden (or a Pakistani pensioner with a beard) in a daring solo raid behind enemy lines stormed into the Afghan capital, Kabul, made a speech that left hundreds of Taliban fighters dead and saw others fleeing for the mountains with their arses on fire then left again all in the space of …

Syrian Rebels Say West Is Already Aiding Thier Uprising.
As the troubles stirred up in Syria by the meddling of the American idiot President Barack Hussein Obama and fuelled by the west’s determination to intervene and effect regime change in another middle eastern nation escalate into civil war, the rebels show they are as unfit a government in waiting as those fanatical mobsters the western powers have catapulted into power in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. We conclude that Obama wants World War 3. …

Can Russia prevent China and India taking up arms against each other?

Can Russia prevent China and India taking up arms against each other?

The recent events at the India-China border have moved into the global media spotlight, with the two countries’ militaries becoming increasingly engaged in skirmishes and face-offs.

Attempts to capture chunks of land have actually become standard practice for the Chinese and Indian border guards deployed along the shared 3,400 km (2,100 mile) frontier since the 1962 war. No bullets have flown and no weapon systems have been used since 1975. In 1993, the two Asian giants signed an agreement on the “Maintenance of Peace and Tranquility,” also known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC) – a step forward on the way to deconfliction.

Somehow, the militaries have managed to resolve incidents at the local level, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to promoting good-neighborliness. Not any more. Fatalities were reported as the two sides clashed in mid-June against the backdrop of tensions, gradually mounting since early May. New Delhi and Beijing are blaming each other for violating the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that separates the forces in the Galwan Valle … Continue reading >>>

Recall, too, that US Secretary of State John Kerry demanded last month, with typical haughtiness, for Russia to «bring Assad to the negotiating table». Not that there is much to discuss as far as Washington, London or Paris are concerned. Assad has to go, in their arrogant view, sooner or later.

Trump Threatens Putin, Assad Over Alleged Syrian “Chemical Attack”; Russia Warns Of “Grave” Response If US Launches Strike

It’s looks like deja vu all over again. Remember when the US Defence Secretary admitted the Syrian “Rebels” funded and armed by the USA have used chemical weapons
against government forces in Syria?

Or when earlier this year, now former Secretary of State Tillerson blamed Russia for an Alleged Syrian chemical attack despite admitting he doesn’t know who actually did it?
Or when the US finally admitted there was “no evidence” Assad used sarin gas?
Or just last week, when Trump said that the US is finally pulling out of Syria as a result of the defeat of ISIS (much to the Pantagon’s fury and open-ended timetable for extracting Syrian resources)?

Germany Alarmed by Aggressive NATO Stance On Ukraine

Turkey Kills Over 50 Syrian Troops, Russian Warplanes Intervene to Halt Offensive

A reminder that there are other things than the corona virus outbreak going on in the world.

Conflict in Syria’s embattled Idlib Province, the last stronghold of the ISIS uprising which once threatened to overrun both Syria and Iraq and establish a new Islamic Caliphate in the region once known as the Levant,  has escalated substantially during the past week, with Turkish government forces attacking the Syrian army and claiming to have killed over 50 soldiers loyal to President Assad.  Russia, the main Syrian ally in the conflict which is basically a showdown between Alawite (Shia) and Salafist (Sunni) muslim sects, took the pressure off Assad and sent a clear message to Turkey’s President Erdogan by sending in warplanes to halt to Turkish assault, and warning the regime in Ankara away from continued action.

Turkish officials tried to justify the incursion into Syrian territiry by claiming Syrioan forces had killed two Turkish soldiers who were in Idlib to “establish peace” and that the attack was only retaliation for that act of war. President Erdogan has threatened strikes anywhere in response to attacks on and injuries to Turkish soldiers. That he can make such a threat when Turkish military forces have no right to be in Syrian territory demonstrates the shambolic state of politics in the eastern Mediterranean region.

Turkish-backed rebels supported by Turkish heavy artillery launched the attacks on Syrian forces trying to oust ISIS rebels from Idlib, an area close to Syria’s border with Turkey.  Syria responded but with their military weakened by the years of conflict with the ISIS rebels were ultimately forced to request Russian help, and airstrikes were launched by Russian Su-24 fighter jets against attacking forces. Russia also contacted Turkey and told them to stop shelling.

While this particular flare-up appears to be over, fighting looks set to intensify as Erdogan, a leader whose sanity is at best questionable, seems determined to pick a fight with Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Putin called the situation a “worst case scenario,” and has demanded that Turkey stop backing terrorist groups in Idlib. Turkey has vowed they will not leave Idlib to Syria, and reiterated demands that Syria unconditionally cede the province to the mostly al-Qaeda-led rebels therein. Erdogan also has stated his intention to seize and annexe territory in Kurdistan currently under Syrian and Iraqui rule but designated an autonomous region by United Nations treaty.

Minority Report on Douma attack exposes ‘compromised reporting & analysis’ by OPCW – MIT professor
The OPCW failed to include evidence on the Douma in its final report, so the resulting document is inherently compromised, an MIT professor said. The religious minority was terrorized by the “Islamic State” during the militant group’s campaign in Iraq and Syria and hundreds, possibly thousands of Yazidi women were raped and used as sex slaves by IsIS terrorists.

Have They Learned Nothing From Iraq?

Reports Of USA Preparing Military Attack On Syria To Depose Assad.
Last April the US fired 59 Tomahawk missiles on Syria, in ostensibly in retaliation for an alleged chemical attack by the Assad regime on its own people. It was later confirmed by United Nations officials in Syria that there was no evidence to suggest the Assad regime was responsible, in fact such evidence as existed pointed to terrorist groups funded, armed and trained by the USA were responsible.

Mainstream Media Reports Truth: West No Match For Russian Military Hardware

Leaked email: Senior OPCW Official Orders “Delete All Traces” Of Dissent On Douma Gas Attack Narrative

We have reported here previously that the alleged use of Chemical weapons by forces controlled by Syrian dictator Bashar al Assad against his own people, investigated by the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons  was not unanimously found by investigators to be the work of the Assad regime. The official narrative was designed to justify full scale military intervention by US and NATO forces in Syria’s civil war, but western leaders were dissuaded for this course of action by Russia’s Putin and China’s President Xi.

Later, while the bulk of the investigative panel stick to the script, it was revealed that a minority report actually considered the facts, which pointed to the gas attack on Douma being a false flag attack carried out by forces attached to terrorist group Al Nusra.

Now documents released by Wikileaks expose corruption in the OPCW whose senior officers are exposed as having tried to prevent to minority report going public.

from AlMasdarNews.com,

Wikileaks has released their fourth set of leaks from the OPCW’s Douma investigation, revealing new details about the alleged deletion of important information regarding the fact-finding mission.

“One of the documents is an e-mail exchange dated 27 and 28 February between members of the fact finding mission (FFM) deployed to Douma and the senior officials of the OPCW. It includes an e-mail from Sebastien Braha, Chief of Cabinet at the OPCW, where he instructs that an engineering report from Ian Henderson should be removed from the secure registry of the organisation,” WikiLeaks writes. Included in the email is the following directive:

Please get this document out of DRA [Documents Registry Archive]… And please remove all traces, if any, of its delivery/storage/whatever in DRA.’”

According to Wikileaks, the main finding of Henderson, who inspected the sites in Douma, was that two of the cylinders were most likely manually placed at the site, rather than dropped. Eye witness reports exposed news video of the rescue operation as having been faked.

“The main finding of Henderson, who inspected the sites in Douma and two cylinders that were found on the site of the alleged attack, was that they were more likely manually placed there than dropped from a plane or helicopter from considerable heights. His findings were omitted from the official final OPCW report on the Douma incident,” the Wikileaks report said.

It must be remembered that the U.S. launched an attack on Damascus, Syria on April 14, 2018 over alleged chemical weapons usage by pro-Assad forces at Douma.
AP file image.

Another document released Friday is minutes from a meeting on 6 June 2018 where four staff members of the OPCW had discussions with “three Toxicologists/Clinical pharmacologists, one bioanalytical and toxicological chemist” (all specialists in chemical weapons, according to the minutes).

Daily Stirrer on Syria’s civil war
Greenteeth on the middle east problem
Latest news from The Daily Stirrer

It is now eight years since we reported the assault of the FUKUS Axis (France, UK and USA,) on Libya. The regime change action, led from behind by Barack Obama, to overthow the regime of the tyrant Muammar Gaddafi was the first in a spate of such engagements, and its failure to brink western style, LGBT rights obsessed neo – liberal democracy to the country, instead transforming it from Africa’s most prosperous and socially advanced nation ino a failed state in which three rival factions have ever since the death of Gaddafi, claimed to be the legitimate government, has taught the United Nations, NATO, the three main participants in the attack on Libya and the Military – Industrial complex nothing at all (viz the failed egime change war in Syria.)

The Libyan civil war that borke out after the murder of Gadaffi by western backed rebels is now well into its eighth year. The current state of play is that warlord Khalifa Haftar lays siege to Tripoli, the nation’s capital and seat of the United Nations-backed government (which has no influence outside the government compunt in the capital city.

Haftar’s attack has escalated the violence that has plagued the country since the downfall of longtime dictator Gaddafi in the 2011 Arab Spring  which was of course kicked off by the idiotic blethering of Barack Obama who, in an ill advised speech in Cairo, pledged that the USA would support any bunch of savaged who tried to overthrow a tyrant who was not in Washington’s pocket. Haftar’s Libyan National Army, which claims to control over two-thirds of the nation’s territory, most of which is unpopulated destrert in the south, stands accused of dozens of war crimes, including a deadly airstrike on a Tripoli migrant detention center, as many nations around the world allegedly shift allegiances toward the warlord and away from the U.N.-backed government.

Almost 5,000 miles away in Washington, both the Libyan government and the rebels have inked multi-million dollar deals with prominent D.C. lobbyists as they aim to win the backing of American policymakers.

Caught with their pants down by the success of Haftar’s attack the UN recognised government’s PR team, Mercury Public Affairs and Prime Policy Group have added only 17 foreign agents to foreign influence operations for the Libyan government since early May. These include former Rep. John Tanner (D-Tenn.), a longtime stalwart on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and vice chairman of Prime Policy Group, and Edward Cox, former policy advisor to retired Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).

The government agreed to pay Mercury $2 million annually in retaining their services. Prime Policy Group, on the other hand, says it made a verbal agreement to work on a pro-bono basis.

“A unified, democratic Libya is in the best interest of Libyans and furthers the security goals of the United States,” the organization said in a press release.

Haftar’s Lbyan National Army has contracted five foreign agents and operatives at Linden Government Solutions, a Texas firm headed by former Bush administration official Stephen Payne. The arrangement, first reported by the AP, will officially include meetings with U.S. officials, “international coalition building and general public relations.”

Payne has an extensive history with the troubled North African nation. He visited in 2011 with former Rep. Curt Weldon (R-Penn.) before the fall of Gaddafi, helping to negotiate the release of three imprisoned journalists. At the same time, he was bankrolling Weldon’s visit in hopes the former congressman could convince Gaddafi to step down. Payne has close ties to three of Gaddafi’s sons.

The deal with Linden is worth about $2 million. Both parties are believed to have interests in Libyan’s oil business, as Payne and legal counsel Brian Ettinger have deep ties in international energy markets and Haftar recently gained control of El Sharara, Libya’s largest oil field.

The Obama administration fervently backed the Government of National Accord, saying America’s partnership with the government “is in America’s national security interest in our fight against ISIL.” While the U.S. and other major powers have nominally pledged support for Tripoli’s Government of National Accord for years, Haftar’s military success has made many reconsider where their allegiances lie.

The Trump administration appears to be divided on which side to support, with the president reportedly praising the warlord for his victories against Islamist groups and encouraging the Libyan National Army’s march on Tripoli in an April phone call. National Security Advisor John Bolton also encouraged Haftar’s attack, according to diplomatic sources.

The military-industrial-humanitarian complex: Western hegemony spread by virtue signalling?

The terms ‘humanitarian’ and ‘democracy’ were once used to describe honourable behaviour and just causes. Now they have become contenders, along with science, socialism and liberal for the dubious honour of being the most abused words in the English language, routinely deployed to justify politically motivated acts of aggression which lead to death and destruction.
Words such as ‘humanitarian’ and ‘democracy’ have acquired a darker and more cynical meaning following their misappropriation to justify the invasion of sovereign nations, effect regime change and promote the spread of Western military, economic and cultural dominance around the world. The mainstream media and many human rights activists, assist these ventures by broadcasting and publishing propagandised news and by tapping into negative emotions such as fear and outrage to soften public opinion and make interference in the political affairs of sovereign states appear justified.
If you remember 2001 and the lies of western politicians and media about Saddam Hussein’s Weapons of Mass Destruction, supposedly capable of being deployed against western targets within 45 minutes, the strategy was used to swing public opinion behind the US / EU / NATO push for a war that would rid them of a maverick leader.  The public were deceived into accepting the invasion through attention-grabbing headlines crafted to abhor readers with ‘evidence’ of Saddam’s butchery and to generate strong emotional reactions which would cause people to think with their hearts rather than their heads.
One story was written by UK Labour MP Ann Clwyd, and published by the one time newspaper of record The Times  two days before the US-led Coalition of the Willing began pounding Iraq’s cities and infrastructure with carpet bombing attacks. Clwyd claimed that Saddam had demonstrated a ‘human-shredding machine’ into which adversaries were fed and reduced to fish food. It is of course a variation on a scence in the Coen brothers film Fargo in which a wood shredder is used to render a corpse unidentifiable.
The article, under the title “See men shredded, then say you don’t back war” was quoted by other newspapers and by TV and radio news and caused readers to feel revulsion towards Saddam and his regime, and made the anti-war lobby appear sympathetic to a murderous regime dubbed by one tabloid, “The Butchers Of Bagdhad,” and indifferent to the plight of the Iraqi people. The story was challenged by anti – war campaigners and no evidence of such a device has been found. And for the record Saddam was supported by more than half of Iraquis, a popularity he achieved by the simple expedient of using a significant proportion of his country’s oil revenues to provide generous welfare payments.

The Iraqi dictator was certainly no angel, but he did manage to keep down the extremist elements in his country ,and of course, his removal by the the western military powers, USA , UK and France (The FUKUS axis,) facilitated the rise of ISIS some years later. Saddam’s real crimes were well known to US and NATO intelligence services, who kept him informed about the locations of Iranian troops during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, in the knowledge that he would use mustard gas and sarin against them.

The US also provided Saddam with cluster bombs and helped him acquire chemical precursor agents. US-based Human Rights Watch estimated that Saddam killed at least 290,000 of his own people while in power.  However, this figure is dwarfed by the number of Iraqis believed to have died in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion, due to occupation forces, sectarian violence or ISIS – this figure is estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands, if not in excess of a million.

The psychological shock-and-awe strategy was again employed in the lead up to NATO’s bombing of Libya, as the US and UK’s on-off relationship with Gaddafi took a turn for the worse after he planned to start selling oil in dinars (a new gold-backed pan-African currency) instead of US dollars or euros, and encouraged his African neighbors to follow suit.

The release of emails from Hillary Clinton’s private server in late 2015, just as the 2016 election campaign was getting under way revealed that such a move would have strengthened African economies and led to competition between the dinar and the dollar or euro. In fact there is in progress now a move led by Russia and China to dump the US$ as reserve currency and move to a system of settling cross border trades in the vendors currency. And earlier this year, China launched the Petroyuan, a gold-backed contract for trading oil futures, on the Shanghai stock & commodity exchange. So old Mad Dog Muammar was just unfortunate enough to be ahead of the game when he had no powerful allies to back him up.

On this occasion, we were treated to the excuse that bombing Libya and supporting the anti-Gaddafi rebels, including Al-Qaeda-affiliated elements, was necessary as Gaddafi was about to commit a massacre against the people of the rebel-controlled city of Benghazi. Another emotive claim designed to mould public opinion into accepting the war affirmed that Gaddafi was giving his soldiers Viagra so they could commit mass rape. An investigation by Amnesty International found no evidence to support this allegation and revealed that on several occasions anti-Gaddafi forces in Benghazi had made false allegations or manufactured evidence of human rights violations.

Without any sense of irony American, European and British politicians and the media now try to justify censorship of news and opinion, seeking to justify this illiberal and undemocratic activity by claiming it is necessary to silence those who spread ‘fake news’. Do we really believe governments and the media are going to censor themselves? Do we believe Google are suddenly going to cease and desist from suppressing factual information and opinions critical of their cronies in Washington? Do we believe Facebook are going to remove the globalist bias from their algorithms and give equal prominence to news and ideas that do not support Zuckerberg’s world domination agenda? Do we look as though we were born yesterday?

The concern of governments and their corporate friends about fake news is that with the rise of new media real news will leak out into the public domain and expose the fact that governments have been feeding us fake news since the modern era began with the protestant reformation.

Saudi Arabia Condemns UN Report On Yemen War Crimes

Yemeni’s bury their dead after yet another Saudi air raid.

A report released by the UN this week confirmed in considerable detail misdeeds by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, killing thousands of civilians in Yemen, raping and torturing detainees, and using child soldiers. In a masterpiece in understatement the report warned these may amount to war crimes.

While the Saudis didn’t dispute any of this, their government was reportedly furious about the report, angrily condemning it as having “misconstrued the facts of the conflict… ignoring the true reasons for the conflict,” while saying that it was an Iranian coup against the “legitimate government in Yemen.”

While previous UN resolutions more or less accepted the Saudi narrative that the war is meant to reinstall the Hadi government, that massive death toll and the many, many war crimes committed have fueled a lot of international consternation.

Still, UN reports detailing war crimes by the Saudi coalition have been met by Saudi condemnation, and in the past that, combined with US support for the war, has been enough to keep the UN from doing anything in particular about the situation.

The UN General Assembly has repeatedly acquiesced to demands that the Saudis be allowed to investigate themselves on the war, which has meant probes are rare, and never come up with anything meaningful.

While it is gratifying to see this forgotten war being properly reported in mainstream media at last, one can’t help contrasting the belated coverage of the four year old Muslim on Muslim conflict and the near silence with which liberal talking heads have responded to it, to the chorus of outrage that has greeted the attacks on Rohingya muslims in Myanmar, or the genicidal campaigns of Sunni Muslims against Christians, Jews, Yazidi and Druze in Syria, Iraq and northern Iran.

Myanmar has been the site of serious conflicts between Buddhist and Muslim communities, particularly in Rakhine State where at least 146,000 persons have been displaced since the first riots in June 2012. This violence has prompted international organizations dedicated to early warning of mass violence to issue alarms, but the dynamics of this conflict are understood differently in Myanmar. In May, three Nobel laureates called violence and persecution of Muslims in Myanmar “nothing less than genocide.” A few days later, U Zaw Aye Maung, the Rakhine Affairs Minister for Yangon Region, was quoted by the Reuters news agency as saying, “if genocide was taking place in Rakhine State, then it was against ethnic Rakhine Buddhists.

It seems the attitude of mainstream media and western liberals is that genocides of Christians, Jews, Buddhist, Hindus and regional sects by Muslims are OK, because “Multiculturalism,” but anybody who tries to defend their home or culture against Muslim aggression is a racist.

Leaked Documents reveal UK gov’t secretly supports Saudi military action against Yemen

Yemenis defiant amid the destruction (Source: http://www.knownterrorists.com)

Last month the war in Yemen slipped, unremarked by mainstream media, unnoticed by the oh-so-politically-correct talking heads on television,  into its fourth year.If the war was simply a falling out between Yemen’s Sunni Muslim government supported by Saudi Arabia and the Shia Muslim Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, there would be s strong case for non intervention, given that western interventions elsewhere in the middle east have only tended to make things worse.

Unfortunately there being no FUKUS axis (France, UK, USA,) forces on the ground in Yemen does not mean the western powers are not involved. While Yemen is being pounded on a daily basis by bombs dropped by Saudi warplanes armed with missiles and weapons supplied by the three FUKUS axis powers, Iran’s support of the rebels is of a lower level. After three years of Saudi air attacks the rebels are still fighting, but the suffering inflicted on Yemeni civilians is not far from genocidal.

The country has a huge humanitarian crisis with many people now suffering from malnutrition, disruption of water supplies has led to disease epidemics because there is only contaminated water to drink and with many hospitals and medical centres having been deliperately targeted by Saudi airstrikes there is a chronic shortage of medicines.

Mainstream media likes to present wars as being fought between the good guys in white hats and bad guys  in black hats:Things are rarely that simple, and certainly not in this case. The Saudi Arabian government is an absolute monarchy that takes as its legal codex the medieval Sharia Law prescribed by the founders of Islam, the fundamentalist Wahhabi Muslim sect of the ruling Saud family exerts great power and the nation’s enormous wealth and vast oil reserves grant it immunity from United Nations censure.
Western leaders say the Saudis are the white hats because of their money and oil and because, when it suits them, they cooperate with NATO, the EU and the USA.

Iran is a theocracy run by Shia religious leaders. It too is under Sharia Law, in much of the nation women and girls are treated as property and punishments are harsh for what can seem to people in the developed nations, relitavely trivial offences. In western media Iran is represented by black hats. In both nations women can be publicly stoned or flogged for disobeying their husbands or fathers and the penalty for adultery is public beheading.

Both sides wear dark grey hats then. But what of the war, is anything being done to mediate between the two sides?

UN Security Council investigators have documented violations of international humanitarian law by all sides with human rights officials claiming the “leading cause” of civilian casualties are airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition, (Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates,) which backs Yemen’s President Hadi against the rebels, supporters of the more moderate and secular regime of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. Houthi artillery and missile attacks in reponse aremorally no different but are delivered with vastly inferior technology and less destructive weapons. The rebel strikes are also less numerous, Iran does not want an all out war with Saudi Arabia and probably cannot match what the Sudis are spending on armaments.

The  British involvement in a war the UK government has called the world’s largest humanitarian crisis is somewhat greater than government ministers are prepared to admit according to leaked documents.

Throughout the Yemen conflict and long before, Saudi Arabia has been by far the biggest  customer of Britain’s  armaments and military technology industry. Half of all UK exports of weapons and military equipment from 2013 to 2017 went to the Arab kingdom. Most sales were for the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF), 151 of whose 324 combat aircraft are British-supplied, along with weapons, radar and other ground systems, parts and spares.

Faced with legal and political criticism, the UK government denies any responsibility for – and claims it cannot necessarily control or even know – how UK-supplied weapons are used by overseas buyers, Last July the High Court agreed with that view (though activists are now applying to appeal that decision).

The recent revelations about the UK’s relationship with the Saudi military challenges this ‘flog and forget’ theory of arms trade. Under a sequence of binding agreements between the two nations, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and its contractors supply not only military ‘hardware’, but also software and “liveware” in the form of expert military personnel to train and advise customers armed forces. Around 7000 people – civilian employees, British civil servants and seconded Royal Air Force personnel – are present in Saudi Arabia to advise, train, service and manage British-supplied combat aircraft and other military equipment.

The government has repeatedly assured Parliament that these personnel are strictly hands-off: “there is no British involvement in targeting or weaponizing aircraft to undertake missions in Yemen” one of the leaked documents says. They also insist that neither UK military nor civilian personnel “are involved in the loading of weapons for operational sorties, nor are they involved in the planning of operational sorties“.

Over the past eighteen months, investigative reporters working with the support of the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust,  have sought to map these British and British-employed personnel in Saudi Arabia, trying to understand their work and their experiences. The precise numbers and functions have remained obscure, even in liberal, democratic Britain people who reveal such details tend to disappear or become victims of ‘bizarre gardening accidents’ and such . The UK-Saudi agreements that govern their work are classified ‘UK Confidential/RSAF Secret‘ and are closed from public release until 2027. Even UK ministers say they “do not have full visibility of the prime contractor’s manpower footprint in Saudi Arabia.

As these agreements show, the umbrella contract between UK and the Saudis requires that “United Kingdom civilian and military personnel will remain available in Saudi Arabia for preparation, including arming and support, of the [Tornado fighter-bomber] aircraft during an armed conflict” in which Saudi Arabia is involved, though these personnel may not “participate” in the conflict directly. The clause makes no reference to the authorisation by parliament or lawfulness of such a conflict.

British diplomats have always been concerned about the implications of this commitment, and have lobbied both Conservative and Labour governments for the clause to be removed.

“At worst”, the Foreign Office’s Middle East Department warned the MoD  , “this clause could expose HMG (Her Majesty’s Government) to accusations that they were involved in an undercover role in  unlawful military adventures; at best, it might threaten to compromise British neutrality in armed conflicts between third States.” Papers elsewhere in the National Archives show that the commitment was removed from a draft version of the agreement circulated within Whitehall six weeks before signature. It nonetheless seems to have been re-inserted into the final agreement at some stage, thus bypassing they scrutiny of elected representatives.

War and Politics Behind Mass Displacement in Africa, Not Climate Change – UCL

camp for refugees from civil war in Darfur

A refugee camp in Africa – Source CNN (screenshot)

A report from a new study conducted by University College London’s may cause a stir in the climate scaremongering industry. The report challenges the academic establishment’s standard narrative of mass displacement in Africa being principally responsible for the creation of refugees in Africa and casts doubt on a number of other assumptions about global problems.

Wheras the climate science lobby can only point to a chain of pailed predictions relating to the disappearance of polar ice caps, the end of winter smows in the northern nations and the extinction of polar bears, in 2018 polar bears are actually increasing in number, satellite data (as opposed to the mathematical models climate scientists rely on for information,) show ice coverage increasing slightly, and both Europe and north America have experienced record snowfalls in recent years.

The report published on Tuesday contained the findings of a research project that links mass population displacement in East Africa over the past half century to social and political factors rather than to climate change, which goes against the “scientific consensus” we have been told repeatedly over the past twenty years is irrefutable.

Published by Palgrave Communications, the report examines the causes of populations displaced within states and those forced to leave their countries of origin and found that rapid population growth and falling or stagnating economic growth in African states within the last decade overwhelmingly accounted for the dramatic increase in the number of refugees crossing the continent, including those seeking sanctuary in Europe.

The authors of the report found links between local or regional conflicts and an upsurge in displaced people arriving in Europe in eight out of ten armed conflicts in East Africa. Another trend linked refugee numbers to unconstrained the population growth which began three a decades ago. It also concluded that economic slowdowns were indicative of 70 percent of population displacements a decade later.

Are Chemical Weapons Inspectors Investigating Anything in Syria?

From The Anti – Media
Following on from our post yesterday on the findings of veteran British journalist Robert Fisk who was the first western reporter to reach the site of the alleged chemical weapon incident.

(ANTIWAR.COM) — Syrian Ambassador Bashar Jaafari told the UN Security Council on Tuesdaythat a UN security team has entered the city of Douma. The inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are scheduled to visit on Wednesday.

The OPCW inspectors did not visit Monday, and there were a lot of allegations exchanged as to why. The Syrian Ambassador’s comment appears to lend credence to Syria’s previous claim that UN security concerns prevented the visit.

British officials had claimed Russia and Syria were preventing the visit. Earlier this month, there were allegations of a chemical weapons strike against Douma. There is no public proof that the strike took place, and a mounting amount of doubt that it didn’t, driven by inquiries from Robert Fisk. Residents within Douma have also expressed doubts about the strike.

OAN investigators weren’t able to confirm any evidence of a chemical weapons attack on Douma. To the extent that investigations are happening, they suggest there was no chemical strike.

Clearly, Douma was attacked by Syrian forces on that day, and the day prior. Those strikes, however,  were insisted by the Syrian government to be purely conventional strikes. There is little to suggest anything else, beyond claims from the White Helmets, and Western nations claiming to have secret proof.

Syria and Russia have both denied from the start that the attack took place, and they have believed the OPCW visit would reveal the truth. Russia in particular was pushing for an investigation to take place before any rash action against Syria. Ultimately, US-led attacks on Syria happened Friday night.

The US seems to be anticipating the OPCW probe not going their way, and is already accusing Syria and Russia of plotting to tamper with the site. There’s no evidence of tampering of any kind. The US suggestion was based on the fact that Russian military police visited the site. The visit, however, was done days ago, and Russia said it was meant to deter the West from attacking Douma and destroying  evidence.

Since the US, Britain, and France already attacked Syria, they have little reason to want the OPCW visit to be successful. They clearly weren’t interested in getting the facts before the strike, and facts that don’t support their narrative could be very embarrassing.
