Facebook Takes Another Hit After Report Zuckerberg Knew Of “Questionable” Privacy Practices

Mark Zuckerberg: If he still thinks he is untouchable the thought will not last much longer.

The reputation of scandal – plagued social media giant Facebook took another hit on Wednesday after emails emerged which appear to show CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s knowledge of questionable privacy practices at the company, (and presumably his approval of such malfeasances as he did not act to stop them,)  according to the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter.
The WSJ wrote:

Within the company, the unearthing of the emails in the process of responding to a continuing federal privacy investigation has raised concerns that they would be harmful to Facebook—at least from a public-relations standpoint—if they were to become public, one of the people said.

The potential impact of the internal emails has been a factor in the tech giant’s desire to reach a speedy settlement of the investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, one of the people said. Facebook is operating under a 2012 consent decree with the agency related to privacy, and the emails sent around that time suggest that Mr. Zuckerberg and other senior executives didn’t make.

It is not yet known exactly which emails the FTC has requested, or to what extent they implicate Zuckerberg.

The FTC launched its investigation in 2018 in the wake of the scandal surrounding the massive ‘data harvesting’ exercise brought to light by the Cambridge Analytica controversy which revealed that company specifically had used illegally obtained personal data to target certain users with news intended to influence voting patterns.

In the wake of that other abuses of users’ private information were brough to light and it became clear that Facebook was directly involved in gathering data on web users who do not even have a Facbook account.

The FTC investigators will be looking to ascertain if Facebook’s data privacy lapses violated a 2012 consent decree the company agreed to.

In one email exchange from April 2012 that has caught regulators’ attention, according to a person familiar with the matter, Mr. Zuckerberg asked employees about an app that claimed to have built a database stocked with information about tens of millions of Facebook users. The developer had the ability to display that user information to others on its own site, regardless of those users’ privacy settings on Facebook, the person said.

Mr. Zuckerberg wanted to know if such extensive data collection was possible and if Facebook should do anything to stop developers from displaying that data, the person said.

Another employee responded to Mr. Zuckerberg’s question, saying it was possible and many developers do the same thing but adding it was a complicated issue, the person said. –Wall Street Journal

The Journal also notes that email exchange in question happened after the FTC’s consent decree had been agreed, but before the date on which it took effect, bringing to mind Zuckerberg’s most famous one – liner, “The dumb fucks trust me.”.

The current report states “If [the decree] had been in effect at the time, the stockpiling of such user data would potentially have violated it. Mr. Zuckerberg’s message seemed to indicate he was aware of that, according to the person who was familiar with the exchange,” per the report.

In April, the company said it anticipates paying up to $5 billion to settle the case.

On Tuesday, Facebook said in a statement: “We have fully cooperated with the FTC’s investigation to date and provided tens of thousands of documents, emails and files. We are continuing to work with them and hope to bring this matter to an appropriate resolution.”

Facebook’s Censorship Drive Backfires As Advertisrs Dump Platform

Mark Zuckerberg’s bid to set up Facebook as official censor by appointment to The New World Order has backfired spectacularly as major brands are feeing the social media giant’s advertising platform. CrossFit just announced they are shuttering their Facebook and instagram ad campaigns due to censorship, which filters out conservative and libertarian flavoured content and promotes only far left propaganda.

Facebook recently banned one of their affiliate pages without reason or warning. Many other organisations have been purged, somtimes not for actually supporting right wing political views but for simply not being enthusiastic enough about the kind of far left sacred cows Zuckerberg likes to embrace for his virtue signalling exercises. Other unethical behavior Facebook has engaged in around data rights includes collecting private data from users’ home systems without authority, selling said data to advertisers and public relations consultants, ignoring court orders to cease and desist, tax evasion and a host of other bltantly illegal or ethically dubious activities.

The issues raised by CrossFit’s decision reflect conservative concerns over free speech and social media censorship given the political bias shown by the owners of these companies. It seems that in their quest to satiate the outrage mob they have banned too many accounts, often without any reason other than that those sites reflect views that do not coincide with those of some egomaniacal Silicon Valley bilionaire.

When you appease exrtremists by banning one group then those same people demand you ban another group and it never ends. It is a trait of the left wing mindset that it can only ever go further in the same direction. Thus Facebook caving to far left faux – outrage over non – issues like ‘transgender rights’ or banning support for Israel has resulted in their steady decline. Young people are are abandoning the platform as it is now longer seen as cool, but has become a byword for authoritarian and illiberal business practices and political views. And now even it’s biggest backer, the U.S. government is targeting Zuckerberg’s empire with anti-trust measures. As more people and groups get banned on facebook more people decide to leave.

Bombshell: Facebook co-founder says it’s ‘time to break up’ the social media giant

In an opinion piece for The New York Times Chris Hughes, the co – founder of Facebook has called for scandal – plagued the social media and data theft behemoth to be broken up and lambasted the “staggering” and “unchecked” power of his former friend and co – founder, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a lengthy and searing critique of Zuckerberg’s amoral, and often illegal behaviour at the helm of the social media corporation.

Hughes co-founded Facebook with Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 and watched “in awe” as the company grew over the last 15 years — but said he now feels a “sense of anger and responsibility” about how all-powerful and out-of-control the social media giant has become under the management of the increasingly power – crazed CEO.

Lashing out at the company, Hughes wrote in the NYT piece that Zuckerberg’s power and influence goes “far beyond that of anyone else in the private sector or in government.” People may think that is sour grapes, but Hughes has no reason to be bitter,  his time at Facebook made him a fortune estimated in the region of $500 million and he left of his own volition, having been quoted as saying, “ “Working with Mark is very challenging,” says Hughes. “You’re never sure if what you’re doing is something he likes or he doesn’t like. It’s so much better to be friends with Mark than to work with him.”

He has also said he thinks more of Zuckerberg’s friends who were involved in the creation of Facebook, most of whom he’s still in touch with, have left Zuckerberg’s empire in part because, like him, they got fed up with the CEO’s unpredictable and megalomaniacal behaviour.

Mark Zuckerberg on ethics (Picture via Sott.net)

“Working with Mark is very challenging,” says Hughes. “You’re never sure if what you’re doing is something he likes or he doesn’t like. It’s so much better to be friends with Mark than to work with him.”

In the article Hughes criticizes Facebook over “sloppy privacy practices,” “violent rhetoric and fake news,” and the “unbounded drive to capture ever more of our time and attention.” “It’s not that Zuckerberg is a bad person,” he writes, but “he’s human” and his focus on growth has “led him to sacrifice security and civility for clicks.”

There are many who would argue with the statement that Zuckerberg is human, given his robotic performances in front of members of the US Congress, UK Parliament and European Union regulators, biologically he may appear human but there is something misssing in his make up that renders him unable to understand why people might object to his company sharing users’ illegally obtained personal data with any organisation willing to pay for it.

Hughes also bemoans the fact that the obsessive workaholic Zuckerberg controls three core communications platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) and says that lack of competition, market or government regulation is a major problem. If a competitor crops up, Zuckerberg can simply choose to shut it down “by acquiring, blocking or copying it” in the manner it did with the Instagram and WhatsApp mergers. “There is no precedent for [Zuckerberg’s] ability to monitor, organize and even censor the conversations of two billion people.” Hughes warns.

It does not stop there, the article also reveals that Zuckerberg alone can decide how to configure Facebook’s algorithms to determine what people see in their News Feeds, what privacy settings they can use and even which messages get delivered.

Hughes also worries that Zuckerberg has “surrounded himself with a team that reinforces his beliefs instead of challenging them.” He believes that neither Facebook’s offer to appoint a “privacy czar” or the expected Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fine of $5 billion will be enough to rein in the corporate tyrant who heads Facebook.

The answer lies in more government regulation of technology companies’ activities and increased market competition through breaking up Zuckerberg’s empire into separate, competing organisations Hughes says. The lack of competition means that “every time Facebook messes up, we repeat an exhausting pattern: first outrage, then disappointment and, finally, resignation.”

‘Unbiased’ Facebook Fired Executive For Pro – Trump Political Beliefs

image
Zuck plays with one of Luckey’s gadgets but denies Luckery the right to his own opinions.

Mainstream media and left wing politicians like to show how they are up with modern trends and developments by heaping praise on psychopathic Silicon Valley, virtue-signaling, shadowbanning, conservative – censoring, fake news generating social media billionaires. Thus, though the political bias towards the left / liberal parties and causes is blatantly obvious, they are allowed, when they appear before US Congressional committees to answer questions on abuse of privacy, or respond to accusations of bias by devising  PR campaigns to show to the world they are truly impartial, with zero liberal bias. Unfortunately, every time they try to pull such a stunt, it backfires as their true ideological face quickly emerges from behind a fake, hypocritical mask.

A case in point is that of former Facebook executive, Oculus co-founder and virtual-reality wunderkind Palmer Luckey, who was a rising star of Silicon Valley when, at the height of the 2016 presidential contest, he donated a modest $10,000 to an anti-Hillary Clinton group. His donation sparked a backlash from his colleagues, which then led to him being put on leave, and six months later he was fired.

What stinks about Luckey’s termination, is that when testifying before Congress about data privacy earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg denied, or rather lied that the departure had anything to do with politics. In fact, neither Facebook nor Mr. Luckey ever gave a reason why he left the social-media giant.

Now however, disgusted perhaps by Zuckerberg’s continued hypocrisy in claiming Facebook is a totally neutral platform politically: according to a report from the WSJ, Luckey revealed to asociates the reason for his termination from that bastion of apolitical impartiality Facebook, was his support for Donald Trump and the furor that his political beliefs sparked within his employer, and Silicon Valley, some of those people say.

We should perhaps remind you here that support for Trump does not necessarily imply agreement with Trump’s policies or admiration of his abrasive style. Post election analysis showed many people supported Trump because they were horrified at the prospect of corrupt, crooked, warmongering, morally dysfunctional Hillary Clinton, who in her campaign had effectively promised war with Russia by committing herself to attacking the Assad regime in Syria as soon as she took office.

Luckey’s attack on Facebook and Zuckerberg is not just sour grapes either:leaked  internal Facebook emails suggest the matter was discussed at the highest levels of the company. In the fall of 2016, as anger over his modest political donation to a candidate the boss didn’t like simmered, executives at Facebook – which according to Open Secrets has spent over $60 million on lobbying in the past decade – including Zuckerberg pressured Mr. Luckey to publicly voice support for libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, despite Mr. Luckey’s years long support of Trump.

At that point Luckey, 26, allegedly hired an employment lawyer who argued to Facebook that it had violated California law in pressuring the executive to voice support for Johnson and for punishing an employee for political activity.

Which, we have to say is pretty typical behaviour among Silicon Valley billionires. Go against the ‘corporate culture’ as dictated by the billionaire boss, and you are dead

Luckey and his lawyer are not as stupid as Zuckerberg is arrogant and megalomaniacal, and negotiated a payout of at least $100 million, representing an acceleration of stock awards and bonuses he would have received through July 2019, plus cash, according to the people familiar with the case. The stock awards and bonuses were a result of selling his virtual-reality company, Oculus VR, to Facebook in 2014 for more than $2 billion, a deal that netted him a total of about $600 million.

In other words, Facebook can claim it was Trump’s “fault” that a $10,000 donation resulted in a $100,000,000 payout just a few months later. What a bunch of wankers.

Commerzbank, Mozilla, Suspend Facebook Ad Campaigns As Advertisers Start Pulling Out

As we reported yeserday, the backlash against Facebook over the Cambridge Analytics data harvesting story continues to grow. At first it seemed fairly innocuous, some crazy scientist had developed an app that tricked people into granting access to their personal details and activity records. Then it emerged that even though the guy had been naughty, claiming he was collecting datas for research, when in fact his plan was to sell the database to commercial outfits, for which he should have paid Facebook a fee for using their site.

Then it dawned on people that although Cambridge Analytics, which bought the unethically obtained data was being demonised in mainstream media because they numbered among their clients Donald Trump;s 2016 campaign and the Leave campaign in the british EU referendum campaign, but in fact what they did was what facebook’s business is built on, all those quizzes, tests, memes, like buttons etc. are about commecting personal data without users being aware of what is going on. And that started a public backlash (which we reported yesterday).

Now the blight has spread to advertisers: first it was Mozilla, now Germany’s Commerzbank has also suspended a Facebook advertising campaign, Unilever is in the process of pulling what’s left of its campaigns after announcing last year that Facebook adverts were not effective and several agencies have announced their clients will no longer use the platform.

“Brand safety and data security are very important to us”, German daily Handelsblatt quotes Commerzbank brand management chief Uwe Hellmann as saying. “We want to give ongoing investigations enough space, and decide how to proceed at an appropriate time.”

Just a week ago, before the scandal story broke, Commerzbank had launched a large-scale image campaign, which was planned to be broadcast on selected TV channels as well as online, including on Facebook. The campaign is tied to a repositioning of the Frankfurt company’s brand.

Facebook advertisers have threatened to abandon the platform in the wake of the massive data harvesting scandal which began after it was revealed that an app created by two psychologists gathered data on over 50 million Americans and then sold it to political data firm Cambridge Analytics and several others, who used it without consent.

Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of the social media giant and a well know world domination wannabe gave several creepy interviews Wednesday after spending three days in hiding, ostensibly with a crisis management team which advised him not give wholly unsatisfactory answers to one of the largest data breaches in history. Naturally the answers he gave questioners were totally unsatisfactory, and were also not believed because Zuckerberg and his company have a track record of priomising one thing and doing the opposite.

ISBA, a British group of advertisers that spend hundreds of millions of pounds a year on Facebook, demanded answers. It is understood that some of the 3,000 brands it handles, which include those of the consumer goods companies Unilever and P&G, will not tolerate association with Facebook if it emerges that users’ data has found its way into the hands of brokers and political campaigners without authorisation. Sources close to the trade body said that if the company’s answers were unsatisfactory, advertisers might spend their money elsewhere. ISBA will meet Facebook executives this week.

Other major clients, such as Mozilla, the the Firefox browser company, have already pulled out, or as a spokesperson said, have “pressed pause” on Facebook advertising. In a scathing post, Mozilla said that “when Facebook takes stronger action in how it shares customer data, specifically strengthening its default privacy settings for third party apps, we’ll consider returning.” Until then, “Mozilla will advertise elsewhere.”

Facebook knows a great deal about Mozilla’s two billion users, perhaps more intimate information than any other company does. They know everything we click and like on their site, and know who our closest friends and relationships are, because despite its denials, Facebook is known to install tracking cookies on the device of anyone who visits a page with a Facebook ‘like’ button. Because of its scale, Facebook has become one of the most convenient platforms to reach an audience for all companies and developers, whether a multibillion corporation or a not-for-profit.

It is believed that Facebook took steps to limit developer access to friends’ data beginning in 2014, but can any=thing Facebook reveals about its business be trusted (sic)?. When we consider the assurance was given after Facebook started its relationship with Cambridge University Professor Aleksandr Kogan, whose decision to share data he collected from Facebook with Cambridge Analytica is behind the current scandal.

We believe still more will be revealed about Facebook’s lax attitude to privacy and ethics, for example its current default settings leave access open to a lot of data – particularly with respect to settings for third party apps.

Meanwhile, Facebook shares continue to slide – falling approximately 8.6% in three trading sessions and down again on Thursday premarket as investors – particularly “ethical” investment funds – reconsider their decision to hold the increasingly toxic company.

Facebook as Important As The Printing Press? We Think Not.

Mark Zuckerberg, the man with the second most punchable face in the world (Smug, simpering Peter Tachell is first) is nothing if not a vainglorious, egomaniacal, fuckwitted, festering gobshite and a supperating syphilis sore on the bell end of humanity.

Announcing a plan to float the non porofit making idiots paradise website Facebook on international stock exchanges Zuckerberg compared the flotation (which will net him over $1billion) to the invention of the printing press in its importance to the future of humanity. The Printing press made books, Facebook has no product except the personal data it steals from its users. Boggart Blog comapres the flotation of Facebook to the invention of the Ponzi scheme.

Being a former I.T. pro with many years experience behind me and also an enthusiastic reader of printed matter all my life I know a bit about technology and printed matter. And I cannot see any way in which a printing press could be used to bombard me with trivia and advertising targeted to my personal tastes or to steal my personal data.

Is Zuckerberg just talking through his arse? you might well ask.

He could be but as the picture below shows, his face looks like an arse so it’s hard to tell.

Zuckerfucker
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the second most punchable face in the world?

The other question you might well ask is, “Have the stock markets learned nothing from the dotcom crash.”

The answer to that is yes, they have learned that enough people are so besotted with technology they are stupid enough to invest their hard earned in pile of porcupine poo if it had has an internet connection and thus make fortunes for the bankers and brokers who handle the share sales.

There really is very little hope for western civilisation.

Historical footnote: Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the moveable type printing press, made little money for himself but benefitted almost every human being who lived since is invention was launched, made it easy to share knowledge and made the great joy of reading available to the masses. Mark Zuckerberg made it possible to tell everyone in the world that you had a wank last night.
