Universities warned of ‘creeping segregation’ as Sheffield launches LGBT-only student halls

UK Universities have been given a warning about an emerging trend of what is referred to as “creeping segregation” on campus as University of Sheffield became the nation’s first to offer student housing where only gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students are allowed to live.

Sheffield University announced it will provide a number of LGBT-only student apartments in September to provide “safe space for students to be themselves”. The university has had 30 enquiries so far and already has plans to expand the number available for next year.

The move has been prompted by concerns from student union leaders that gay and trans students will be targets of “bullying and harassment” in mainstream accommodation. A report from surveys of this year’s under graduates found that 42 percent of LGBT students claim they are forced to conceal their sexuality at university, and 33 percent have received “negative comments” from other students.

But the director of the country’s largest student accommodation service criticised the plan as a form of “segregation” which will ghettoise gay youth and divide student communities.

The Daily Stirrer thinks taxpayer’s (whose money funds universities) have a right to expect university students to concentrate on their academic life, their sex lives are nobody else’s concern. If the current generation of Gay BLTs did not spend so much time getting in people’s faces and yelling about their sexuality they might find they get a better reception from the heterosexual community.
