Junk Food Killing Kids?

We often hear about the plague of obesity from talking – head ‘nutrition experts’ on TV (the kind of experts who are expert at saying what they people paying them want to broadcast), but less is said about the other health problem caused by a diet of junk food. On a typical teenager’s diet it is possible to develop both obesity and malnutrition. On the flip side, you have malnutrition. According to the United Nations (UN) special rapporteur, Hilal Elver, Ph.D., the impact of processed food on public health is “alarming.”  As reported by Civil Eats:25

“Earlier this fall [Elver] told the United Nations General Assembly that, despite all the high-profile work being done around the globe to fight hunger and malnutrition, ‘the world is not on track to reach globally agreed nutrition targets.’

Addressing leaders from around the globe, Elver was not afraid to name the culprit.

‘Today’s food systems are dominated by industrial food production and processing’ … coupled with trade policies that result in ‘large food corporations … flooding the global market with nutrient poor yet energy-dense foods that are relatively inexpensive.’”

As explained by Civil Eats:

“Why the need for civil society groups to sue governments over the right to food? A significant part of what’s gone wrong, Elver explains, is that international trade policies have allowed large food corporations to sell lots of soda, fast food and other high-calorie, nutrient-poor products made with cheap refined grains, corn sweetener and vegetable oil … [M]uch of this production is also controlled globally — in terms of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides — by a very few large companies.”

It has long been known that a good, varied diet which avoids white sugar and processed foods containing chemical additives is essential for good health. But while these things are known, governments have for decades allowed big food corporations to literally get away with murder by marketing products which are high in empty calories and low on nutrition at children and young people.

According to Elver, lack of access to nutritious food is an indicator of socioeconomic inequality, and when a bag of sweets is cheaper than an apple, this inequality ripples out into our health statistics. As noted by Elver, “We now know that this kind of highly sugar intensive, saturated fat heavy and salty food really makes you sick.”

Elver also stresses that in order to protect and ensure there is an adequate supply of good quality food the global community must move away from the industrial model toward more sustainable systems. We simply cannot sustain a global population on commodity crops like corn and soy, and the United States’ health statistics is a perfect demonstration of what happens when you try.

With the rise of obesity has come a rise in the number of American children who suffer from type 2 diabetes. In a nationwide representative study between 2001 and 2009, researchers found that while the prevalence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes increased, the rate of increase of the preventable type 2 diabetes was significantly higher than type 1.

Dr. Robin Goland, co-director of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center, calls these “big numbers” and went on to say:

“In my career, type 1 diabetes was a rare disease in children and type 2 disease didn’t exist. And I’m not that old.”

Indeed, once thought to be an exclusive adult metabolic disorder, in the past 20 years, type 2 diabetes in children has jumped from less than 5 percent of all newly diagnosed cases to more than 20 percent, and obesity plays an important role in this trend.

Childhood obesity leads to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes more quickly than in adults, and is associated with both metabolic and cardiovascular complications in children and adolescents. Severe insulin resistance is also associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality in young adults and a higher risk of hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic syndrome.

This rising tide of children suffering from obesity and type 2 diabetes suggests we can expect ever increasing indirect and direct cost of care and loss of life in coming years.

The root cause of most health problems can be traced back to a poor diet. Most Americans spend the majority of their food dollars on processed foods, most of which contain one or more of the three ingredients most associated with obesity and chronic disease, namely corn, soy and sugar (HFCS), all three of which are also typically genetically engineered (GE) and contaminated with toxic pesticides.

The processed food industry is responsible for creating a “lifestyle disease epidemic” the World Health Organization (WHO) says is “a much greater public health threat than any other epidemic known to man.” Just as agriculture has become one of the most significant environmental polluters rather than being a leading environmental steward, the food industry has become a leading source of ill health rather than a source of nutrition, health and wellbeing.

In my view, this is thoroughly unacceptable. Marketing junk food irresponsibly to kids and thus knowingly increasing diabetes, obesity, cancer and heart disease rates is unacceptable yet the big food corporations are allowed to get away with it by lax or incompetent regulators . The ever-increasing use of toxic pesticides   and herbicides that contaminate food a $£€ budgets to legal battles that block and defeat legislation and regulation aimed at improving the quality of the food supply and protect both the environment and human health is unacceptable, yet the Big Food corporations do all of these things as part of routine business. And they get plenty of support from politicians, but then they also allocate multi – million $£€ budgets for political donations so no surprise there.

The most effective way for us to  fight back is by changing our purchasing habits, going for home cooked foods prepared from fresh ingredients rather than pre – prepared meals or packaged food prducts. While there are “food deserts” in inner cities, most people are not forced to buy processed foods for lack of options.

Yet another factor driving disease statistics in the U.S. is the excessive exposure to toxic endocrine disrupting chemicals. According to one recent analysis, if exposure to certain household chemicals — including phthalates, DDT, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and perfluoroalkyl — were to be reduced by 25 percent, it would reduce the rate of obesity and type 2 diabetes by an estimated 13 percent. According to the authors:

“The present study confirms substantial contribution, especially of mixtures of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, to adult type 2 diabetes, and large annual costs of medical care … Our findings also speak the need for a strong regulatory framework that proactively identifies chemical hazards before they are widely used, and the use of safer alternatives …

The European Union is actively considering regulations to limit such exposures, and the USA recently revised the Toxic Substances Control Act, but does not consider endocrine disruption. In the absence of such a framework, newly developed synthetic chemicals may emerge as diabetogenic exposures, replacing banned or substituted hazards as contributors.”

The right choices can make  a big difference in the level of exposure to toxic chemicals, and subsequently  in the long term to our overall healthour health. In one study, young girls who switched to phthalate-free personal care products lowered their phthalate levels by 27 percent.

Taking personal responsibility and seeking out non-toxic products appears to be the only way to really stay safe, as the chemical industry maintains a stronghold over government departments and regulatory agencies in both the U.S. and Europe. The French magazine Le Monde recently published a three-part investigative series in which it accuses the European Commission of ignoring the science on endocrine disruptors. The series has been translated and republished by Environmental Health News.

Former McDonalds CEO Warns Minimum Wage “Will Wipe Out 1000s Of Jobs”

by Arthur Foxake

This blog is not a big fan of McDonald’s, their food does not appeal to us and their business practices are appalling. but they have been a very successful business over the past 50 years and so when a former CEO speaks out against one of the left’s great sacred cows, the minimum wage.

For some reason that can only be related to their economic illiteracy, the left; USA’s Democratic Party, UK’s Labour Party and Europes Social Democratic parties seem to think the imposition of a minimum wage must improve the lot of ‘the poor’.

Nothing could be further from the truth, we have written on the negative effect of minimum wage laws on the income of low wage workers. The first minimum wage scheme, The Speenhamland Poor Relief System, introduced in the late eighteenth century in England was disastrous for the people it was supposed to help. Faced with having to pay a legal minimum hourly rate, employers simply cut workers hours. Things are no different now, as former McDonalds chief Ed Rensi explained in a Forbes op – ed recently:

(While his words might shock the big government worshipping, Nanny State tit suckling ‘progessives’ should be no surprise to any rational businessman or accountant.)

“A $15 minimum wage won’t spell the end of [fast-food brands]. However it will mean wiping out thousands of entry-level opportunities for people without many other options.” The $15 minimum wage demand, which translates to $30,000 a year for a full-time employee, is built upon a fundamental misunderstanding of a restaurant business (and we add simple supply and demand fundamentals) – just “do the math” Rensi rants…

“They’re making millions while millions can’t pay their bills,” argue the union groups, suggesting there’s plenty of profit left over in corporate coffers to fund a massive pay increase at the bottom.

In truth, nearly 90% of McDonald’s locations are independently-owned by franchisees who aren’t making “millions” in profit. Rather, they keep roughly six cents of each sales dollar after paying for food, staff costs, rent and other expenses.

Let’s do the math: A typical franchisee sells about $2.6 million worth of burgers, fries, shakes and Happy Meals each year, leaving them with $156,000 in profit. If that franchisee has 15 part-time employees on staff earning minimum wage, a $15 hourly pay requirement eats up three-quarters of their profitability. (In reality, the costs will be much higher, as the company will have to fund raises further up the pay scale.) For some locations, a $15 minimum wage wipes out their entire profit.

Recouping those costs isn’t as simple as raising prices. If it were easy to add big price increases to a meal, it would have already been done without a wage hike to trigger it. In the real world, our industry customers are notoriously sensitive to price increases. (If you’re a McDonald’s regular, there’s a reason you gravitate towards an extra-value meal or the dollar menu.)

Instead, franchisees can absorb the cost with a change that customers don’t mind: The substitution of a self-service computer kiosk for a a full-service employee.

Rensi concludes on a sombre note…

I suspect that the labor organizers behind this campaign for a $15 minimum wage are less interested in helping employees, and more interested in helping themselves to dues money from their paycheck.

They’re unlikely to succeed in their goal of organizing the employees of McDonald’s franchisees, but they may well succeed in passing $15 into law in other sympathetic locales.

You’ll see their legacy every time you visit the Golden Arches, where “would you like fries with that” is a button on a computer screen rather than a phrase spoken by an employee in their first job.

While Mr. Reni is referring specifically to a familiar situation at McDonalds, similar things will happen in other businesses and industries. A business can only survive if it pays what the job is worth. And what the job is worth must be dictated by market rules and not by Barack Hussein Obama, Killary Clinton and their elitist cronies.

Unsurprisingly, while governments are prepared to condem the children and grandchildren of their own nationals to the gringing poverty of part time work and zero hours contracts, there are some groups who have contributed nothing to society and in many cases have no legal right to be in the country, for whom special arrangements are made

Denmark Gives Large Bonuses To Get Migrants To Work – How Is That Fair To Danes

In a move that tells us much about what is wrong with the politically correct Culturalk Marxism that dominated European politics, the government of Denmark has announced a plan to persuade migrants to work for a living instead of claiming state handouts by offering companies 40,000 kroner to hire them.

This new plan for migrants is part of the ‘integration basic education’ plan that hopes to get migrants working so they are not as huge a drain in the Danish welfare system as they are becoming more and more in places like Germany and Austria. It is difficult to see any logic behind that, surely it is no more expensive to pay out doles than to employ people who have no skills and cannot speak the national lanugage to do nothing. How many office cleaners and kebab stuffers does a sma;; country like Denmark need?

The programme announcement follows the leaking to Danish media of figures showing non-Western migrants made up a startling 84 per cent of all Danes on welfare. Migrants currently cost the government around 1.1 billion pounds every year.

TheLocal.dk reports the new programme aims to get migrants into short-term jobs at an apprentice salary of around 50 to 120 kroner an hour. This is the equivalent of around 12 pounds an hour which is almost double the current wage for British apprentices who are paid the legal minimum wage of £6.70 an hour, although that will increase to £7.20 in April.

The migrant jobs will last up to two years and they will also be offered 20 week courses to increase their skill development and further their education. The companies that participate in the scheme will also be eligible for a bonus of 40,000 kroner (£4,179), if the migrants remain employed for the two-year term of the contract.

The Danes will also pay for accommodation for the migrants who take part, making sure that they are able to live close to their employer or at least in the same city or town. Relocation and transportation costs will likely also be paid for by the state.

This is just another example of the wrong headedness of political elites, it will do nothing to help integrate new immigrants into Danish society, but by sending out the message that foreigners are given special treatment and their interests are prioritised over those of local people it will encourage more to come and thus make the crisis worse.

GMO Giants Hired ‘Attack Dog’ to Discredit 14-yo School Girl Activist Who Exposed Their Dodgy Science

monsanto-1Big Biotech versus independent farmers (image source)

Biotech Industry, with the collaboration of academics, elected politicians and government employees have planned to conquer the food industry and replace natural seed stock with genetically modified (GM) products. Monsanto and other multinational corporations infiltrated the highest levels of federal agencies so their patented Franken-foods could be rubber-stamped for market.

The Industry has been exposed repeatedly for using bogus science, while preventing independent research until the GM crop is approved for sale. They spend millions on advertising to persuade the public that their food is safe for human health and the environment.

The tide is turning, though, as alternative media provides an avenue to counter industry propaganda and bring independent research to light. And it’s working, as evidenced by a recent poll finding that nearly 90% of consumers want to know if their food is GM or not. Thankfully, they were unsuccessful in getting the federal government to ban states from labeling GM food.

Rachel Parent has played a big role in educating others with her Kids Right to Know campaign. Her accomplishments include debating Kevin O’Leary on national television, giving a speech at a TEDx event on the right to know, and meeting with former Canadian Health Minister Rona Ambrose.

Dogs With Human DNA

We have worked at building our reputation as a website that brings you news you will not see reported in mainstream media and this post is no exception.

Are we going to see a Boggart Blog exposé of mad scientists creating human / canine hybrids, you might well ask having formed a very reasonable interpretation of the title. Well no, control freak biologists conducting Nazi style experiments in creating man – dog superwarriors would be right up our street, but the story being covered in more prosaic than that. We are sticking with yesterdays’s main topic, sausages. Hot Dog’s in fact.

American Hot Dog (image source)

It is bad enough to think that, as we have told you many times in the past, these tasty snacks beloved of American teenagers, have as the ingredients providing most of the meat content, lips, arseholes, eyeballs, kidneys, spleens, insects, poo, horsemeat and those mysterious rubbery bits that are just impossible to chew.

OK, fair enough, we’ve all eaten shite when we are young, drunk and far away from our mothers’ refrigerators. But the horror of Hot Dogs does not end with lips and arseholes.

When, as a child, you used pester power to bully your parents into buying you a hot dog we are certain that as a last desperate line of defence before Mum and Dad caved in was the phrased (wailed in a plaintive voice), “Surely you don’t want to actually eat one of those do you? Have you any idea what goes into them? Chances are you didn’t and despite their reservations, neither did your parents.

The case is you see, that according to a recent study, over one in ten hot dogs contain stuff that should not be in a Hot Dog*, including ……………….. wait for it ……………….. human DNA. Yes there are dead bits of people (though not necessarily bits of dead people) in your Hot Dog. While lips, arseholes, insects and the rest might seem reasonable, any suggestion a hot dog contains human DNA sounds like a conspiracy theory or they synopsis of a dystopian movie.

According to a study for “The Hot Dog Report” by Clear Food, which provides molecular analysis of commonly purchased food brands, 14.4% of samples tested were euphemistically labeled “problematic.” According to the report: “Clear Food found human DNA in 2% of the samples, and in 2/3rds of the vegetarian samples.”

Hot dogs are often described as “mystery meat.” Now you know why.

*This article refers only to Hot Dogs as the snack consisting of a German sausage served in a split roll and dressed with mustard or ketchup. Those people currently campaigning for the legalisation of marriages between animals and humans may well know of a hot dog they would like to put their DNA into but we would rather not contemplate such things.

Wanking With A Wurst In Walmart – What A Silly Sausage

In these last few weeks of blog.co.uk it’s good to get back to the original mission of Boggart Blog and make you smile. This story of a woman who got a wide on in Wal Mart, just as he passed the display of gourmet sausages should fit the bill:

from Smiles Happen:

The sausage boffing woman (pictured above with some of her lovers) has not been named to spare her family embarrassment (source)

On Monday, police were called to a Louisiana Walmart under the suspicion that a customer was shoplifting food. According to the complaint, a Walmart worker radioed security about a suspicious woman in the meat aisle. Security cameras filmed 33-year-old Shaniqua Johnson shoving sausages under her shirt. CCTV footage then shows the woman walking to the bathroom, where she remained for at least 30 minutes.

The male security guard says he knocked on the bathroom door several times but the woman did not respond. He then announced he was entering. What he found behind the door of the unlocked stall is something he said will “haunt his dreams forever.” The security guard reports when he entered the stall, Johnson was inappropriately pleasing herself with a Jimmy Dean package of sausage. He said that when he entered “She didn’t even stop. She just stared at me and kept going.” –

Shocked, and also frightened for his safety due to the fact that Johnson is a “big girl,” the 140 pound security guard said he ran out until police arrived. When they did, female officers entered the restroom with Johnson still “putting in work with the sausage.” All in all, it took 7 police officers to restrain Johnson and pry the victimized sausage out of the woman’s hands. She was arrested and taken into custody where she was charged with shoplifting, indecent exposure, and resisting arrest. Walmart management said in no way do they tolerate this type of behavior. They have a strict policy against shoplifters and a sign on the bathroom door that clearly reads, “No merchandise allowed beyond this point.”

A spokesperson for the state police said, “We have to act decisively to stamp out crimes involving the sexual abuse of foodstuffs. Sexualizing innocent sausages is clearly unplatable behaviour in the eyes of decent people.

After Cigarettes and Alcohol, The Government Plans Sugar Tax

Sugar does not make you obese, fat does not make you obese, eating too much makes you obese (image source)

The election may have put a Conservative government in power and consigned the pokenoses and busybodies of Labour and the Lib Dems to the political wilderness, but the bansturbators of the public sector march on, their war against pleasure, laughter, tasty food and anything that might put people at risk of enjoying themselves continuing unabated it seems.

A row flared up in the Department for Health yesterday after a junior minister said snack companies could be forced to pay a “sugar tax” if they continue to sell unhealthy foods. The Telegraph reports that George Freeman, Life Sciences Minister, said he may support such a tax to pay for the cost of treating obesity, blaming sugary drinks and snacks for Britain’s expanding waistline.

He told the Hay Festival: “I don’t think heavy-handed legislation is the way to go.

“But I think that where there is a commercial product which confers costs on all of us as a society, as in sugar, and where we can clearly show that the use of that leads to huge pressures on social costs, then we could be looking at recouping some of that through taxation.

“Companies should know that if you insist on selling those products, we will tax them.”

His comments have placed him at loggerheads with Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who previously ruled out such a move, saying that the government would look at alternative ways to get people to eat healthily. Other figures, mostly unelected bureaucrats in the Department for Health, have backed the idea, including chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies and Susan Jebb, chairman of the Food Responsibility Network.

The chairman of campaign group Action on Sugar, Graham MacGregor, backed Freeman’s comments, saying: “We are very much in favour of a sugar tax and we welcome Mr Freeman’s words.

“The Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, can no longer ignore the fact that current nutrition policy whereby the food industry is allowed to police itself is, unsurprisingly, not working. We are delighted that Tesco has agreed that this is exactly the sort of action that we need and all other retailers must follow suit.”

Also speaking at the Hay Festival, Professor Tim Lang of City University London took an even more hard-line approach, saying that snack manufactures should be banned from calling their products “food”.

Any move to introduce such a tax would likely be fiercely opposed by more libertarian Conservative backbenchers who are already smarting after the government pushed plain packaging for cigarettes through parliament before the election.

Once again we see the innately fascist tendencies of people who work in the public sector but never have to put their jobs on the line by seeking re-election. Mars Bars, Crisps and cans of Cola do not make anybody eat them. Most of us can enjoy an occasional chocolate egg but equally can walk right past the sweet snacks or fizzy drinks displays in supermarkets without being tempted. Yet a sugar tax could not be discriminatory, we the responsible people would therefore be punished for our occasional treats while the morbidly obese would continue to get ‘special payment’ on top of their disability benefit to cover the cost of their addiction to pigging out.

Je Suis Saussice (defending your freedom to eat sausages)

sausages an abomination
Sausages: I have eaten some abominable ones in motorway services but are they an abomination to God?

Does that headline mean Boggart Blogger are owning up to being a dish of sausages, you might well ask.

The anser of coursse is “No”. Just as we showed solidarity with the publishers of Charlie Hebdo magazine after twelve staff were murdered by religious extremists and defended the right of citizens in democratic nations to criticize religion by saying “Je Suis Charlie” so we are now making a stand in support of the freedom to eat sausages (which is an abomination to Allah apparently, by saying “Je Suis Saussice”.

Who has been oppressing sausages you might well ask. Well who do you think? Here’s the story:

paraphrased from The Times (a paywalled website unless you know how to get in through the back door
)
Religious conservatives in Pakistan have been on the case of opposition leader and former cricket player Imran Khan’s latest wife after TV pictures of her cooking and selling pork sausages found their way onto You Tube, the Times reports.

Muslim weather presenter Reham Kahn, a who worked on BBC regional news programme ‘South Today’, was filmed handling a butcher’s pork sausage as part of a package for the programme’s broadcast from the South of England Show in 2011.

Part of the feature filmed at the fair in Ardingly, West Sussex, had Mrs Kahn being coached by sausage making champion David Bell, owner of Bangers Galore in the nearby town of Horsham in the ancient art of frying sausages.

The clip has been circulated and widely viewed in Pakistan, along with clips of her wearing revealing outfits.

But Mr Bell, who was the main subject of the sausage news item and rightly so, champion sausage makers are to be celebrated, spoke out against the controversy saying it was ridiculous.

“She didn’t actually eat any of the sausages” he pointed out. (Apparently proximity is enough.)

Islam strictly forbids the eating and handling of pork under its religious laws and the footage has caused anger among conservatives who say the film shows her handling the meat, and therefore breaking the law.

Full article – paywalled

I hope some pseudo-liberal, crypto-fascist readers whose instinct is to defend this attack by Islamic extremists on our freedom to eat sausages on the grounds that we must promote diversity by showing sensitivity to other cultural traditions will remember exactly what diversity means next time they get the urge to throw a hissy fit over some truly liberal bloggers defent the right of Christians to oppose the latest demand for privileged statius from gays, or the right of pagans to oppose the introduction of Frankenstein foods to Europe.
