With little notice, more than two dozen state U.S. legislatures have passed corporate – friendly “seed-preemption laws” designed to block counties and cities from adopting their own rules on the use of seeds, including bans on GMOs. Opponents say that there’s nothing more fundamental than a seed, and that now, in many parts of the country, decisions about what can be grown have been taken out of local control and put solely in the hands of the state.
Critics of the GM seed lobby say this move has come as a result of unethical activity by lobbyists employed by a monopolistic cartel of biotech giants whose influence over agricultural policy in the US government is definitely not in the public interest
“This bill should be viewed for what it is — a gag order on public debate,” Kristina Hubbard, director of advocacy and communications at the Organic Seed Alliance, a national advocacy group, and a resident of Montana said. Montana, along with Texas, Oregon, Californisa and Colorado and many other states passed a seed-preemption bill this year, thus removing from voters the right to decide what kind of food will be sold in shops they use, and handing it to politicians and indirectly to the corporate lobbyists who bribe them.
“This thinly disguised attack on local democracy can be easily traced to out-of-state, corporate interests that want to quash local autonomy,” Hubbard added
Seed-preemption laws are part of a legislative campaign by industrial agriculture (Big Food), including ag-gag laws passed in several states that legally prohibit outsiders from photographing farms, and “right-to-farm” laws that make it easier to snuff out complaints about animal welfare, and of course the usual demands from corporate business, unthinkingly backed by the university brainfucked humandroids who call themselves the left. The seed laws, critics say, are a related thrust meant to protect the interests of agro-chemical companies, by banning laws which require foods containing material from GM crops to be clearly labelled, so depriving consumers of a choice about whether they eat this shite or not.
Foods containing GM matter are currently banned in the European Union, and though the EU bureaucracy and some national governments have tried to overturn this, strength of public opinion has blocked any change. Politicians, academics and media luvvies have as usual described the mass opposition as being due to the “scientific ignorance of the masses,” who believe eating GM foods will lead to babies being born with two heads. It is such hubris that has led the complete breakdown of trust between the general population and the establishment. Few people believe eating GM food will be harmful in the short term, but having already seen the effects in increased costs and reduced quality of modern intensive farming techniques, they are very suspicious of any move to hand control of the food supply to global corporations. Some politicians in the U.S.A. and European Union have even talked of banning the planting of natural seed and only allowing food crops to be grown from GM seed. This would of course hand control of the food supply for humans and animals to a small group of corporate giants whose track records on ethical issues are very dubious. but it gets worse.
Nearly every seed-preemption law so far enacted in the USA borrows language from a 2013 model bill drafted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The council is “a pay-to-play operation where corporations buy a seat and a vote on ‘task forces’ to advance their legislative wish lists,” essentially “voting as equals” with state legislators on bills, according to The Center for Media and Democracy. ALEC’s corporate members include the Koch brothers as well as some of the largest seed-chemical companies — Monsanto, Bayer, and DuPont — which want to make sure GMO bans, like those enacted in Jackson County, Oregon, and Boulder County, Colorado, don’t become a trend.
In Oregon, the bill blocking anti – GM laws was greenlighted in 2014 after Monsanto and Syngenta spent nearly $500,000 fighting a GMO ban in Jackson County. Monsanto, Dow AgroSciences, and Syngenta spent more than $6.9 million opposing anti-GMO rules in three Hawaiian counties, and thousands more in campaign donations. (These companies are also involved in mergers that, if approved, would create three seed-agrochemical giants.) Now ask yourselves this question: ‘If GM biotech produce was so good, why would the corporations that profit from it have to work so hard to overcome opposition?’
With public opinion and a significant (but ignored by mainstream media strongly opposed to the introduction of Genetically Modified foods one would think that politicians, having lost the trust of voters, might hold back on this one. But no, as usual they are sidelining the public interest and ignoring public opinion in order to push the interests of the corporate cronies.

She adds that steps should be taken to speed up this development. Researchers said the study was at odds with the advice health professionals and researchers working for pharmaceutical corporations have been offering for the past fifty years. For many years now however, independent research has shown that fats, including saturated fats, are healthy and beneficial and processed carbohydrates are the real villain, with white sugar at the top of the list
Following the official advice has led to people who thought they were eating healthily to eat far too much stodgy food like bread, pasta and rice while missing out on vital nutrients, the study reported.
Participants who consumed the highest levels of carbohydrates, especially the refined sugars found in fizzy drinks and processed meals, faced a 28 per cent higher risk of early death (as always we add a caveat about statistics, always ask percentage of what? In this case, because figures vary widely from study to study if we assume at around 25% (1 in 4) adults under 70 will have some kind of cardiovascular problem, then those who have a 28% higher risk (again 1 in 4 for the sake of simplicity) have a 28% of 25% higher risk.)
The research, presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress, in Barcelona found those with low intake of saturated fat in fact had 13 per cent higher risk if early death compared to those eating plenty.
And consuming high levels of all fats while reducing refined carbohydrates cut mortality by up to 23 per cent.
The Canadian study tracked eating patterns and death rates across 18 countries.

A new problem has now emerged in Qatar, the world’s biggest source of natural gas: the financial system is running out of dollars. Bloomberg reports that several Qatari banks have boosted interest rates on dollar deposits to shore up liquidity as the Saudi-led campaign to isolate the gas-rich state intensifies.
Adding to concerns of a monetary blockade, Bloomberg also reports that some banks in neighboring countries have been offloading investments in Qatar amid concerns of a widening of the blockade.
Qatar is the world’s wealthiest nation on a GDP/capita basis and is well able to withstand a prolonged financial siege, and defend its currency and economy. Finance Minister Ali Shareef Al Emadi played down the impact of the crisis on the country, in an interview with CNBC on Sunday (11 June) saying the plunge in Qatari assets last week was a “normal” reaction to the standoff.
“In such a situation, a man or a country begins to make mistakes… Putin said. The state begins to function ineffectively. One mistake follows another. That is the trap in which, as I believe, the United States got caught into,” Putin reflected during a press conference.<strong><em>

We often hear about the plague of obesity from talking – head ‘nutrition experts’ on TV (the kind of experts who are expert at saying what they people paying them want to broadcast), but less is said about the other health problem caused by a diet of junk food. On a typical teenager’s diet it is possible to develop both obesity and malnutrition. On the flip side, you have malnutrition. According to the United Nations (UN) special rapporteur, Hilal Elver, Ph.D., the impact of processed food on public health is “alarming.” As reported by Civil Eats:25
“Earlier this fall [Elver] told the United Nations General Assembly that, despite all the high-profile work being done around the globe to fight hunger and malnutrition, ‘the world is not on track to reach globally agreed nutrition targets.’
Addressing leaders from around the globe, Elver was not afraid to name the culprit.
‘Today’s food systems are dominated by industrial food production and processing’ … coupled with trade policies that result in ‘large food corporations … flooding the global market with nutrient poor yet energy-dense foods that are relatively inexpensive.’”
As explained by Civil Eats:
“Why the need for civil society groups to sue governments over the right to food? A significant part of what’s gone wrong, Elver explains, is that international trade policies have allowed large food corporations to sell lots of soda, fast food and other high-calorie, nutrient-poor products made with cheap refined grains, corn sweetener and vegetable oil … [M]uch of this production is also controlled globally — in terms of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides — by a very few large companies.”
It has long been known that a good, varied diet which avoids white sugar and processed foods containing chemical additives is essential for good health. But while these things are known, governments have for decades allowed big food corporations to literally get away with murder by marketing products which are high in empty calories and low on nutrition at children and young people.
According to Elver, lack of access to nutritious food is an indicator of socioeconomic inequality, and when a bag of sweets is cheaper than an apple, this inequality ripples out into our health statistics. As noted by Elver, “We now know that this kind of highly sugar intensive, saturated fat heavy and salty food really makes you sick.”
Elver also stresses that in order to protect and ensure there is an adequate supply of good quality food the global community must move away from the industrial model toward more sustainable systems. We simply cannot sustain a global population on commodity crops like corn and soy, and the United States’ health statistics is a perfect demonstration of what happens when you try.
With the rise of obesity has come a rise in the number of American children who suffer from type 2 diabetes. In a nationwide representative study between 2001 and 2009, researchers found that while the prevalence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes increased, the rate of increase of the preventable type 2 diabetes was significantly higher than type 1.
Dr. Robin Goland, co-director of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center, calls these “big numbers” and went on to say:
“In my career, type 1 diabetes was a rare disease in children and type 2 disease didn’t exist. And I’m not that old.”
Indeed, once thought to be an exclusive adult metabolic disorder, in the past 20 years, type 2 diabetes in children has jumped from less than 5 percent of all newly diagnosed cases to more than 20 percent, and obesity plays an important role in this trend.
Childhood obesity leads to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes more quickly than in adults, and is associated with both metabolic and cardiovascular complications in children and adolescents. Severe insulin resistance is also associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality in young adults and a higher risk of hypertension, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic syndrome.
This rising tide of children suffering from obesity and type 2 diabetes suggests we can expect ever increasing indirect and direct cost of care and loss of life in coming years.
The root cause of most health problems can be traced back to a poor diet. Most Americans spend the majority of their food dollars on processed foods, most of which contain one or more of the three ingredients most associated with obesity and chronic disease, namely corn, soy and sugar (HFCS), all three of which are also typically genetically engineered (GE) and contaminated with toxic pesticides.
The processed food industry is responsible for creating a “lifestyle disease epidemic” the World Health Organization (WHO) says is “a much greater public health threat than any other epidemic known to man.” Just as agriculture has become one of the most significant environmental polluters rather than being a leading environmental steward, the food industry has become a leading source of ill health rather than a source of nutrition, health and wellbeing.
In my view, this is thoroughly unacceptable. Marketing junk food irresponsibly to kids and thus knowingly increasing diabetes, obesity, cancer and heart disease rates is unacceptable yet the big food corporations are allowed to get away with it by lax or incompetent regulators . The ever-increasing use of toxic pesticides and herbicides that contaminate food a $£€ budgets to legal battles that block and defeat legislation and regulation aimed at improving the quality of the food supply and protect both the environment and human health is unacceptable, yet the Big Food corporations do all of these things as part of routine business. And they get plenty of support from politicians, but then they also allocate multi – million $£€ budgets for political donations so no surprise there.
The most effective way for us to fight back is by changing our purchasing habits, going for home cooked foods prepared from fresh ingredients rather than pre – prepared meals or packaged food prducts. While there are “food deserts” in inner cities, most people are not forced to buy processed foods for lack of options.
Yet another factor driving disease statistics in the U.S. is the excessive exposure to toxic endocrine disrupting chemicals. According to one recent analysis, if exposure to certain household chemicals — including phthalates, DDT, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and perfluoroalkyl — were to be reduced by 25 percent, it would reduce the rate of obesity and type 2 diabetes by an estimated 13 percent. According to the authors:
“The present study confirms substantial contribution, especially of mixtures of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, to adult type 2 diabetes, and large annual costs of medical care … Our findings also speak the need for a strong regulatory framework that proactively identifies chemical hazards before they are widely used, and the use of safer alternatives …
The European Union is actively considering regulations to limit such exposures, and the USA recently revised the Toxic Substances Control Act, but does not consider endocrine disruption. In the absence of such a framework, newly developed synthetic chemicals may emerge as diabetogenic exposures, replacing banned or substituted hazards as contributors.”
The right choices can make a big difference in the level of exposure to toxic chemicals, and subsequently in the long term to our overall healthour health. In one study,young girls who switched to phthalate-free personal care products lowered their phthalate levels by 27 percent.
Taking personal responsibility and seeking out non-toxic products appears to be the only way to really stay safe, as the chemical industry maintains a stronghold over government departments and regulatory agencies in both the U.S. and Europe. The French magazine Le Monde recently published a three-part investigative series in which it accuses the European Commission of ignoring the science on endocrine disruptors. The series has been translated and republished by Environmental Health News.
This blog is not a big fan of McDonald’s, their food does not appeal to us and their business practices are appalling. but they have been a very successful business over the past 50 years and so when a former CEO speaks out against one of the left’s great sacred cows, the minimum wage.
For some reason that can only be related to their economic illiteracy, the left; USA’s Democratic Party, UK’s Labour Party and Europes Social Democratic parties seem to think the imposition of a minimum wage must improve the lot of ‘the poor’.
(While his words might shock the big government worshipping, Nanny State tit suckling ‘progessives’ should be no surprise to any rational businessman or accountant.)
“A $15 minimum wage won’t spell the end of [fast-food brands]. However it will mean wiping out thousands of entry-level opportunities for people without many other options.” The $15 minimum wage demand, which translates to $30,000 a year for a full-time employee, is built upon a fundamental misunderstanding of a restaurant business (and we add simple supply and demand fundamentals) – just “do the math” Rensi rants…
“They’re making millions while millions can’t pay their bills,” argue the union groups, suggesting there’s plenty of profit left over in corporate coffers to fund a massive pay increase at the bottom.
In truth, nearly 90% of McDonald’s locations are independently-owned by franchisees who aren’t making “millions” in profit. Rather, they keep roughly six cents of each sales dollar after paying for food, staff costs, rent and other expenses.
Let’s do the math: A typical franchisee sells about $2.6 million worth of burgers, fries, shakes and Happy Meals each year, leaving them with $156,000 in profit. If that franchisee has 15 part-time employees on staff earning minimum wage, a $15 hourly pay requirement eats up three-quarters of their profitability. (In reality, the costs will be much higher, as the company will have to fund raises further up the pay scale.) For some locations, a $15 minimum wage wipes out their entire profit.
Recouping those costs isn’t as simple as raising prices. If it were easy to add big price increases to a meal, it would have already been done without a wage hike to trigger it. In the real world, our industry customers are notoriously sensitive to price increases. (If you’re a McDonald’s regular, there’s a reason you gravitate towards an extra-value meal or the dollar menu.)
Instead, franchisees can absorb the cost with a change that customers don’t mind: The substitution of a self-service computer kiosk for a a full-service employee.

I suspect that the labor organizers behind this campaign for a $15 minimum wage are less interested in helping employees, and more interested in helping themselves to dues money from their paycheck.
They’re unlikely to succeed in their goal of organizing the employees of McDonald’s franchisees, but they may well succeed in passing $15 into law in other sympathetic locales.
You’ll see their legacy every time you visit the Golden Arches, where “would you like fries with that” is a button on a computer screen rather than a phrase spoken by an employee in their first job.
While Mr. Reni is referring specifically to a familiar situation at McDonalds, similar things will happen in other businesses and industries. A business can only survive if it pays what the job is worth. And what the job is worth must be dictated by market rules and not by Barack Hussein Obama, Killary Clinton and their elitist cronies.

Denmark Gives Large Bonuses To Get Migrants To Work – How Is That Fair To Danes
In a move that tells us much about what is wrong with the politically correct Culturalk Marxism that dominated European politics, the government of Denmark has announced a plan to persuade migrants to work for a living instead of claiming state handouts by offering companies 40,000 kroner to hire them.
This new plan for migrants is part of the ‘integration basic education’ plan that hopes to get migrants working so they are not as huge a drain in the Danish welfare system as they are becoming more and more in places like Germany and Austria. It is difficult to see any logic behind that, surely it is no more expensive to pay out doles than to employ people who have no skills and cannot speak the national lanugage to do nothing. How many office cleaners and kebab stuffers does a sma;; country like Denmark need?
The programme announcement follows the leaking to Danish media of figures showing non-Western migrants made up a startling 84 per cent of all Danes on welfare. Migrants currently cost the government around 1.1 billion pounds every year.
TheLocal.dk reports the new programme aims to get migrants into short-term jobs at an apprentice salary of around 50 to 120 kroner an hour. This is the equivalent of around 12 pounds an hour which is almost double the current wage for British apprentices who are paid the legal minimum wage of £6.70 an hour, although that will increase to £7.20 in April.
The migrant jobs will last up to two years and they will also be offered 20 week courses to increase their skill development and further their education. The companies that participate in the scheme will also be eligible for a bonus of 40,000 kroner (£4,179), if the migrants remain employed for the two-year term of the contract.
The Danes will also pay for accommodation for the migrants who take part, making sure that they are able to live close to their employer or at least in the same city or town. Relocation and transportation costs will likely also be paid for by the state.
This is just another example of the wrong headedness of political elites, it will do nothing to help integrate new immigrants into Danish society, but by sending out the message that foreigners are given special treatment and their interests are prioritised over those of local people it will encourage more to come and thus make the crisis worse.
