Nothing Is Truly Scandinavian: Self Hating Attack On National Identity Provokes Outcry

When the oh so clever boys and girs in the marketing department of Scandinavian Air Service (SAS) which tried to sell the airline on the back of the idea that Scandinavian identity doesn’t really exist, it was a step in left wing self loathing to far was a step too far for potential customers and the company was forced to go into damage control mode just hours after the launched.  A heated debate raged in social media and on radio phone – ins: what’s wrong with a national identity? caller after caller and comment after comment demanded.

The Nordic airline SAS needs to go back to the drawing board after it’s “Nothing is truly Scandinavian” advertising campaign crash-landed and abandoning the naïve, insulting premise that national identities do not exist would be the perfect starting point.

It was immediately obvious from the  torrent of vitriolic criticism the idiotic idea attracted was that Scandinavian punters were not on the same wavelength as the ‘woke’, university brainwashed imbeciles with their media studies and social science degrees who dreamed up the campaign.   Scandinavians were not at all happy at being told they should be tortured with angst about the lack of social justice in Afreekaaa, South East Asia and other third world shitholes, and racked with with guilt over the numerous acts of what the woke brigade insist on calling “cultural appropriation,” the adaptation of ideas from backward cultures that have not advanced much since the stone age, without which European civilisation could not have developed and  that north Europeans had previously, mistakenly thought of as the building blocks of their very own national identity.

Among the more ridiculous claims, and using a rhetorical device of the ill-informed, the campaign suggests that “rumour has it“ that world famous Swedish meatballs are actually Turkish. There is of course no evidence to support this in fact, as the classic recipes for Swedish meatballs use beef and pork and Turkey is a Muslim country, evidence suggests Swedish meatballs  did not originate in Turkey. Just about every national cuisine has a version of meatballs or meat patties. Except of course for sub Saharan national cuisines. I’ve been told by a half – Senegalese, half Swiss friend that in his experience sub Saharan African nations don’t have anything sophisticated enough to be called a national cuisine.

Why do the work brigade have to do this shit? Why are they so ashamed of the nations and social cultures that nurtured them that they constantly have to try to belittle those nations and cultures and, in this case,  shame a nation into believing that a popular dish is one they have stolen from some impoverished shithole country where people still live in mud huts and charring meat over an open flame is about as sophisticated as cooking gets? It’s the cheapest, nastiest, most unpatriotic campaign imaginable and the people who embrace such ideas are cheap, nasty, smal minded, self – hating, emotionally crippled virtue signallers.

The case here is that the campaign was the idea of &Co, an oh-so-self-aware Copenhagen-based agency shows the extent of self-loathing and guilt that exist in the liberal world of the creative class. Now if these cupid stunts want to kill themselves, that should be fine with sane people, the world always needs less arseholes. but to try to reduce the entire population of a global region to the kind of dysfunctional, self – pitying inadequacy that residents of the media bubble and supporters of far left politics exist in is bordring on criminal.

Perhaps their ham fisted (or meatball fisted maybe,) attempt to declare “What is truly Scandinavian? Absolutely nothing” should have been run past members of the public in Norway, Denmark and Sweden before they started disowning national treasures like sticky pastries, meatballs, marzipan sweetmeats and parental leave, because the ill-judged idea showed all the finesse of The Muppets’ Swedish chef at work on one of his more chaotic recipes.

Outside of the advertising community bubble people object to having their entire nationality excoriated, diced and served up as simply the sum of various parts because an agency with a lucrative airline contract has bought in to the hippy dippy, nineteen – sixties idea that the world is one big happy melting pot populated by multicoloured, gender fluid, easily influenced childbrains. Patriotism, the ‘woke’ crowd believe, is the thin-edge of the nationalist wedge, and identifying specific traits as belonging to only certain kinds of people is culturally disrespectful.

It’s utter bollocks of course, our history, the shared history of our nations is what makes us, and from the histories of our diverse nations and cultures comes the diversity that the ‘woke’ crowd are always screeching about but mistakenly think relates only to skin colour.

As the late Carl Sagan opined: “It pays to keep an open mind, but not so open your brains fall out”.

Because that is what has happened here. Nothing Is Truly Scandinavian is an example of the ‘woke’ crowd trying to impose a homogeneous, ersatz culture on the civilized world because the truth is they hate true diversity.

EU Heading for Breakup and Conflict Warns Former French P M.

A former Prime Minister of France, Dominique de Villepin has made a speech warning that the European Parliament election next year could be trigger a major political crisis for the 27 member Union (Britain will be gone before the election takes place), adding that attacking anti – integration or nationalist parties as “extremeists” in the way current French President, Emmanuel Macron repeatedly has  recently, could help the Eurosceptics win votes.

The EU election has been framed by leaders favouring Europe’s progressive integration as an opportunity to push for more political leagislative and economic union, while the bloc’s far right populists hope a surge in the number of European Parliament Members, (MEPs), will hamstring the ruling elite of unelected bureaucrats in Brussels of its authortirian power.

We are witnessing the early stages of “an extremely serious political crisis,” M. de Villepin said in a joint interview with the TV station CNews, Europe 1 radio and newspaper Les Échos. He added tensions between Europhiles and Eurosceptics would likely reach boiling point in the coming months.

De Villepin also warned Macron is folish to engage in a political “arm-wrestle” with the extremes. “I think he [Mr Macron] is being a little bit presumptuous. The president is trying to highlight the deep gulf between progressives and nationalists… But polarisation inevitably leads to, in times of crisis, the victory of the toughest candidates.”

He also called on Europe’s so-called progressives to avoid lumping together all types of nationalism.

Macron overestimates his ability to wage a war against forces which have become extremely powerful because they are, in the eyes of voters, more effective and efficient. That’s the problem with populism,” he said,  adding a further warning that surges in support for anti-EU, radical right parties in the May election was highly likely.

Mr de Villepin also dismissed Mr Macron’s calls for a ‘true European army’ to defend the bloc against threats from powers including the US as stupid.

US President Donald Trump slammed Macron’s call for an EU army as “insulting” soon after landing in Paris for a weekend of events to mark the end of World War One on Friday. that he published a fiery tweet criticising his French host over his proposal.

How Many Times Can Lame Duck Merkel Regenerate Her Government?

This week the new series of Doctor Who launched amid much ballyhoo about the mysterious Doctor being played for the first time by a woman. While many pedantic Whovians (or whatever they call themselves,) are appalled and complain that the lead role belongs to a man, in my not so humble opinion Jodie Whittaker (best know to date for Broadchurch,) the thirteenth Doctor Who, looks as if she may be the best Doctor since David Tennant. She brought to the role a sense of fun which has been missing since Tennant. Both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, the two most recently transformed Doctors in what has become a long line of regenerated Doctors are excellent actors, but somehow lacked the charisma to carry off a role that needs to be played with an attitude of, “I know this story is bollocks, but it’s not meant to be taken seriously so let’s have fun.” What has this to do with angela Merkel and Germany? you might well ask. Indulge me, all will become clear.

In the past few years the show had come over all politically correct and disappeared up its own arse. Another field of human endeavour that was in the past a lot of fun but has now fallen into the trap of taking itself too seriously is politics. Take Germany for example. Germans have always been a bit prone to taking silly things seriously. That Master race nonsense a few decades ago is a case in point. Germany was the most prosperous and stable democracy in Europe under Hausfrau – Volksfuhrer Merkel until she won her third term as Chanellor. That victory had the same effect as being declared divine once had on Roman Emperors. Merkel began to believe her own publicity, and thought she could change the world by supporting schemes to unite Europe under a single government and flood the continent with third world migrants (aka cheap labour for Germany’s factories). And she believed she could succeed because Germans, the ignorant masses, would march in lockstep behind her.

And that’s when it all started to go wrong. Uncontrolled immigration caused social and economic problems, while Merkel’s popularity slumped so much that in the wake of the inconclusive election of September 2017 her conservative CDU party was forced into a coalition with their traditional rivals the socialist SPD to keep nationalist and Eurosceptic parties out of power. Yet Merkel, who had looked dead in the water, is still afloat, her political career having undergone more regenerations that Doctor Who.

Earlier this year, Merkel managed to avoid a potentially disastrous second election by finally, six months after the election, getting the Social Democrats (SPD) to sign up to a mutual suicide pact in the form of new Grand Coalition. This ensured cartel-style government of the political and business elites reigns in Germany to do the bidding the European Union and march towards political and financial integration which fewer and fewer Germans support.

The results of Merkel’ desperatly clinging to power have been catastrophic for the former dominant parties of Germany. The Social Democrats (SDP)  is spiralling towards minor party status, with recent polling now putting them behind five-year old Alternative for Germany (AfD) nationally, 16% vs. 18.5% in a recent poll by Die Welt. Worse news for the SDP is that the classical liberal Free Democrats are gaining ground on them too.

But, it’s not just the SPD that continues to hemorrhage support. Merkel’s own Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is now below 25% nationally, since its coalition with the Christian Social Union (CSU) now has the support from less than 30% of Germans nationally.

The sister party of Merkel’s CDU, the CSU, which is a regional party operating only in Bravaria,  is usually good for around 8-9% of that total, but their support in Bavaria is down below 40%, dropping to 35% as of last month’s poll numbers. So, only a week before Bavarian state elections, all the traditional parties are seeing their bases eroding.

The CDU are aware Merkel is a lame duck, having nailed her colours to the mast or a raft of deeply unpopular globalist policies, the only thing keeping her in power at this point is that there is little confidence among German voters that a new election would solve the problem, while the one thing Merkel has succeeded in throughout her decline is stabbing potential rivals in the back.

The AfD, not a far right party as mainstream media always claim, but centre – right party that rejects globalism and concepts such as multiculturalism and a borderless world, are not ready for government while the pro – business Free Democrats are natural coalition partners but not coalition leaders. One of the problems for the AfD is that since the ninteen thirties, nationalism has ben increasingly conflated with National Socialism. People who compare AfD, Britain’s UKIP, the Sweden Democrats, the Freedom Party in The Netherlands and France’s Front National and Italy’s ruling coalition to Hitler’s Nazis or Mussolini’s Fascists are poorly informed. Nationalism is not authoritarianism. Mohandas K Gandhi was a nationalist, as were Guiseppe Garibaldi, Mustafa Kemal, Charles de Gaulle and Irish republican leader Eammon de Valera. The politics of these leaders ranges from conservative to democratic socialist.

I have closely watched developments in German politics for some years, just as I have watched developments in other EU nations, having anticipated the break up of the community since I worked in the EU Commission in Luxembourg in the 1980s and learned that the long term plan was political integration and the creation of a European Superstate. It was never going to work of course, the only surprise has been that the reassertion of national independence took so long. But what has become clear recently is that the poll numbers for opposition parties like AfD are under-stated because of real fear of political retribution, and allegedly because of electoral jiggery – pokery. For example, in the recent Swedish election, anti – immigration, Eurosceptic party The Sweden Democrats (SDs) slightly under performed against expectations. In the run up to the election Swedish mainstream media and government figures mounted a massive smear campaign against the SDs, branding them Nazis and racists.

After the election, even though the SDs had come from nowhere to be the third largest party and justifiably claim a place in the governing coalition. This was resisted by the undemocratic parties of the left, and now Sweden faces months of political haggling without a legitimate government just as Germany did because Angela Merkel refused to accept the inevitable.

 

While all this is going on, democracy is under attack on other fronts.  Germany’s anti-hate speech laws are being used to arrest people for being politically incorrect, while the far left directors of US internet giants such as Google and Facebook are meddling in political matters having appointed themselves censors of news and opinions that does not suit their cultural Marxist agenda. From last year’s GDPR, an attack on free speech disguised as a measure to protect users’ privacy, to the latest rules on sharing memes, the clamp down on speech critical of the political status quo in Europe is happening quickly not just in Germany but across the EU. Even in Britain, where we are on the way out of the EU, these rules are being applied to suppress voices critical of Islam, government immigration policies and telling the truth about immigrant crimes.

How is this affecting the polls? We have seen the reults for ourselves, in the brexir refrendum, in Sweden, Germany, Italy, Poland, Austria and to a lesser extent in other EU member states that have held elections recently. Watch an interview like this one . with a German voter and we have to wonder if there are masses of ‘closet AfD voters’ there are in Germany like there were ‘closet Trump voters’ in the U.S. in 2016 or Brexit voters in the UK referendum?

Being branded racist or xenophobic or an ignorant, uneducated working class oik might not directly put people off holding their opinions, but the sheer nastiness, and sometimes the violence with which supporters of the left respond on finding somebody does not agree with their ideology driven authoritarian agenda can have a very real deterrent affect.

No major national elections are due for a while, but if significant numbers in Bravaria turn out to vote AfD and cause an upset in Bavaria’s state elections on the October 14th that could be the catalyst to nudge AfD forward nationally to seriously challenge Merkel’s own CDU in the polls.

This plays in to the unfolding political crisis in the democratic world that after Trump and Brexit, Merkel’s decline in Germany and victory for the anti – EU coalition in Italy isn’t on the horizon anymore. It is here, throughout the liberal democracies the old elites are on the back foot, the banking cartel and the domiation of the petrodollar are being challenged, political parties that differ only in name, while toeing the globalist line on policy are in decline, and after the failure of the US /NATO allies to dislodge Assad in Syria, the military – industrial complex can no longer use scaremongering to swing public opinion behind regional wars and regime change campaigns.

Non Germans now outnumber Germans in the city of Frankfurt, for the first time in a German city more than half of Frankfurt residents now have a migrant background, according to data from the city’s Office of Statistics and Elections.
Figures show that 51.2 per cent of people living in Frankfurt have a migrant background, the city’s secretary of integration Sylvia Weber said: Well that sounds like a recipe for conflict.

The WSJ reports The EU Spent a Bundle to Unify the Continent. It’s Not Working.

The European Union has spent nearly one trillion dollars to unify the continent by delivering highways and trains into places where there were once gravel paths. In current dollars, that is over eight times the size of the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe after World War II. The EU has built airports and bridges, trams and swimming pools. It has repaired castles and medieval churches.

It hasn’t bought love.

To the vexation of European leaders, some of the biggest recipients of funding are now hotbeds of discontent, brimming with voters disquieted by the cultural and political pressures that have accompanied European integration, and threatening the bloc’s cohesion.

The biggest recipient of EU cohesion funds in mainland France is Nord-Pas-de-Calais, once an industrial powerhouse of coal, steel and textiles. In parliament, it is represented by Marine Le Pen, the French presidential runner-up who proposed France hold an EU exit referendum.

Many locals say EU funding was overshadowed by the disadvantages of membership, including the obligation to accept migrants from other EU nations. Blaenau Gwent voters favored Brexit by 62% to 38% to leave the EU in 2016. It was Wales’ highest “leave” vote.

The future of the EU still hangs in the balance, with divisions over refugees in particular driving wedges between its member states. If copious spending during decades of European optimism couldn’t revive fading communities or unite the continent, EU officials worry about what comes next. Rising nationalism is pitting smaller, eastern countries against larger, western powers.

EU funding can carry onerous rules and stipulations involving complex paperwork and restrictions on project types, irking recipients. East European nationalists allege that much of the money flows back to German and French construction companies.

Donor countries have soured on cohesion funds, too, partly because of alleged corruption among recipients. In Hungary, where skepticism of the EU runs thick, the bloc’s antifraud agency says $47.8 million spent upgrading street lamps through EU contracts awarded to a company once owned by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s son-in-law contained “serious irregularities” that may constitute fraud. The son-in-law denies the accusation. Mr. Orban says Hungary no longer needs EU cash.

Who Gives, Who Gets?

Member states that receive ‘cohesion money’ are unhappy because of immigration and other political strings attached to the money which they claim is a further erosion of their sovereignty. The donors are unhappy that because of the obligation placed on them by the EU, their money is going to other European nations leaving them strapped for cash to deal with domestic problems.

So far, since the signing in 2007 of the Lisbon Treaty, which effectively laid to rest the charade that the EU formerly EEC and Common Market was simply an association for economic cooperation between European nations, and transformed the European Project into a bid to politically unify the member states into a single political entity, the divisions between member states have been steadily growing, leading to the recent resurgence of nationalism across the continent.

Merkel’s “Common Goal” Duplicity Exposed: CSU Deal Not Final, African Refugee Camps Not Agreed.

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, ambused by reporters as she was leaving a meeting of the Christian Democratic Union in Berlin early Monday said of the deal she claims to have made with coalition partners CSU, “We share a common goal in migration policy. We want to order, control and limit migration to Germany.”

When did this become Germany’s goal and who exactly has agreed to it? And what about those refugee camps (or disembarkation points as Merkel prefers to call them,) in Africa, with no African  having agreed to host them?

The New York Times reports Merkel, to Survive, Agrees to Border Camps for Migrants.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, who staked her legacy on welcoming hundreds of thousands of migrants into Germany, agreed on Monday to build border camps for asylum seekers and to tighten the border with Austria in a political deal to save her government.

Although the move to appease the conservatives exposed her growing political weakness, Ms. Merkel will limp on as chancellor. For how long is unclear. The nationalism and anti-migrant sentiment that has challenged multilateralism elsewhere in Europe is taking root — fast — in mainstream German politics.

“Her political capital is depleted,” said Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, director of the Berlin office of the German Marshall Fund. “We are well into the final chapter of the Merkel era.”

Anti – immigration, Eurosceptic AfD party are the only winners, all Merkel can do is take the CSU and SDP down with her.

Eurointelligence (a paywalled site) made some pertinent comments.

It is pointless to discuss who is the relative winner of this standoff. Both will lose because they have demonstrated that they cannot work together anymore. What it also shows is that attempts to solve the refugee problem, still the number one political issue in Germany, are secondary to the rivalries between CDU and CSU and inside the CSU. The beneficiary of this mess is the AfD. And there are state elections in Bavaria in October.

The deal buys a truce that will last until October. We agree with Berthold Kohler’s assessment in FAZ when he writes that Seehofer shares a large portion of the blame but not all of it. The CSU will increasingly blame Merkel – especially if they do badly at the elections. And the rest of the country has learned that the only way the two parties papered over the crisis is through the Kafkaesque legal fiction which they agreed last night.

But things are not quite as straightforward as spin doctors would have us believe, CDU and CSU may have agreed to this deal but what about the other coalition partner, the SDP?

DW comments Angela Merkel’s Last-Ditch Migrant Compromise Under Scrutiny.

Germany’s conservatives have finally found common ground on migration policy, but skepticism is rife. The proposed measures have also raised concerns over the future of the open-border Schengen Area.

Now the ball is in the center-left court of the Social Democrats (SPD) — the other player in the grand coalition. Without a green light from the SPD, new measures can’t be implemented. SPD party leader Andrea Nahles said there was “still a lot that needs to be discussed.”

In forming the long-awaited new German government earlier this year, the SPD made its opposition to closed migrant centers at borders clear — a stance which was reiterated by several SPD delegates on Tuesday.

“Transit centers are in no way covered by the coalition agreement,” Aziz Bozkurt, the SPD’s expert on migration, told German newspaper Die Welt, adding that the camps were “above the SPD’s pain threshold.”

“The SPD issued a clear rejection of closed camps,” Kevin Kühnert, head of the SPD’s youth wing, Jusos, told the dpa news agency.

So the SDP cannot possibly countenance this deal? What kind of spanners can they throw into the works?

The repercussions of the planned border controls could be felt well beyond the borders of Bavaria. Now the future of open-border travel across the 26 member states of the Schengen Zone could be threatened by stricter controls on the Bavarian-Austrian border.

Responding to the German conservatives’ deal, Vienna said it was prepared to take unspecified measures to “protect” Austria’s southern borders with Italy and Slovenia if its neighbor turns back migrants.

not only does the SPD have a say in this matter, so does Austria.

Merkel repeatedly makes deals that are not hers to make. In fact, this crisis stems from precisely that fact. “We can do this,” she likes to say.

It will be amusing to see what logic SPD uses to agree to send migrants back to Austria and to refugee camps in Africa when no African nation is willing to even consider the idea.

Later this week representative of the finance, corporate, political and academic elites will gather in Davos, Switzerland, as they do at this time every year for the World Economic Forum. In previous years the mood had been upbeat, these people were confident that as they ate $40 hot dogs, sipped $20 coffee and knobbed $1000 an hour prostitutes all paid for one way or another by us poor schleppers who work our arses off just to keep rooves over our heads and food on the table, that their chit chat and shady deals would shape the future of the world.

This year they are not quite so cocky, in fact they are shitting themselves as they struggling to answer the question ‘where did it all go wrong’ and cower in “silent fear” as they face a force they have not previously encountered – populism, the will of the people, or rather the refusal of the people to bow to authority, to automatically defer to the dick who is waving a degree certificate in ancient history and claiming it qualifies him to pontificate on how a modern business should be run. The irresistible might of the popular voice was first demonstrated by the “unexpected” Brexit vote and subsequently by the “shocking” election of Trump. As Moises Naim of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace put it, “there is a consensus that something huge is going on, global and in many respects unprecedented. But we don’t know what the causes are, nor how to deal with it.”

Adding to the farcical nature of this year’s Davos shindig is that, while one of the main topics of discussion is “populism” and social and wealth inequality, overnight a new Oxfam study revealed that not only 8 people own the same amount of wealth as (the poorer) half of the world, but that since 2015, the richest 1% has owned more wealth than the rest of the planet. It is expected that many of the “eight people” highlighted by Oxfam will be present at Davos.

For all the pontificating of politicians, academics, religious leaders and media luvvies, in the decades since we started to hear the mantra that globalisation would make us all equal and propsperity, inequalities have grown exponentially and the gab between rich and poor has widened from a chasm until it is now an abyss.

One of the factors in the rise of populism and an acceptable type of nationalism is that trust in governments, companies, the media and the political establishment has evaporated almost completely as ballots from the United States to Britain to the Philippines have rocked political establishments and scandals hit business. Trust in the media itself, meant to be an objective and impartial observer of the Davos boondoggle, yet sadly captured, has likewise crashed to record lows across all age groups.

Thus the executives, bankers, professors and politicians present at the Forum find themselves in a totally unfamilar position. Some have made placatory noises about learning from past mistakes but it is not in their nature to admit mistakes let alone learn from them. They cannot bluff and bluster as they have in previous years when the difficult questions were raised. They know that nigel Farage or beppe Grillo, Marine Le Pen or Donald Trump, Geert Wilders or Bernie Sanders, Frauke Petry or Rodrigo Dutarte are going to keep on questioning.

As Bloomberg puts it, while “the top executives, financiers, academics and politicians making their way up the mountain to the World Economic Forum will be talking a lot about such non-establishment leaders as President-elect Donald Trump, France’s National Front chief Marine Le Pen and Italian populist Beppe Grillo of the Five Star Movement, they won’t be meeting them. Not one of the leaders bent on overturning the world order as Davos has designed it will be present.”

So much for Davos learning from its mistakes, or truly seeking to reach out to its sworn nemesis: those who have been elected because they represent everything Davos is not.

The World Economic Forum (or the junior Bilderberg Group as some call it) held their annual jolly conference at the exclusive Alpine resort of Davos-Klosters where it will cost you €20 (about$22) for a cup of coffee because the locals have to keep chavs out somehow. Two thousand five hundred politicians, celebrities, and business leaders from all over the world gather every year for this “Bilderberg style” meeting. The delegates include 53 people who own as much wealth as the poorest half of the world’s population and representatives of over 1,000 of the multinational corporate businesses
