Britain’s Net Zero Disaster & The Wind Power Scam

“This is not about complicated issues of cryptocurrency,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicolas Roos declared in the Sam Bankman-Fried trial, after accusing the defendant of building FTX on a “pyramid of deceit.” Much the same can be said about the foundations of Britain’s net-zero experiment. Energy is complicated, and electricity is essential to modern society and our quality of life, but as with FTX, the underlying story is straightforward: Wind power and net zero are built on a pyramid of deceit.

Net zero was sold to Parliament and the British people on claims that wind-power costs were low and falling. This was untrue: Wind-power costs are high and have been rising. In the net-zero version of “crypto will make you rich,” official analyses produced by the Treasury and the Office for Budget Responsibility rely on the falsehood that wind power is cheap, that net zero would have minimal costs, and that it could boost productivity and economic growth. None of these has any basis in reality.

The push for net zero began in 2019, when the UK’s Climate Change Committee produced a report urging the government to adopt the policy. Part of the justification was historic climate guilt. In the words of committee chair Lord Deben, Britain had been “one of the largest historical contributors to climate change.” But the key economic justification for raising Britain’s decarbonization from 80 percent to 100 percent by 2050—i.e., net zero—was “rapid cost reductions during mass deployment for key technologies,” notably in offshore wind. These illusory cost reductions, the committee claimed, “have made tighter emission reduction targets achievable at the same costs as previous looser targets.” It was green snake oil.

During the subsequent 88-minute debate in the House of Commons to write net zero into law, the clean-energy minister, Chris Skidmore, also asserted that net zero’s cost would be the same as the previous 80 percent target, which Parliament had approved in 2008. Challenged by a Labour MP on the absence of a regulatory-impact assessment, Mr. Skidmore misled Parliament, saying that there had been no regulatory-impact assessment in respect of raising the initial 60 percent target to 80 percent.

The regulatory-impact assessment that Mr. Skidmore says doesn’t exist gave a range of £324 billion (about $412 billion) to £404 billion when the target was raised to 80 percent—an estimate that excluded transitional costs—and cautioned that costs could exceed this range. Unlike today’s political pronouncements, the assessment was honest about the consequences of Britain acting if the rest of the world didn’t. “The economic case for the UK continuing to act alone where global action cannot be achieved would be weak,” it warned. … Continue Reading >>>

In the unthinking stampede of politicians and ‘scientists’ towards achieving ‘Net Zero’ and thus ‘saving the planet’ from death by human civilisation, perhaps a reality check is long overdue for the delusional Green Blob and the virtue signalling politicians. In order to save the planet from a largely imaginary threat based on an ideology behind which there is very little scientific and absolutely zero empirical evidence.

And as if that was not enough to make any sane person stop and think, the solutions proposed by the Green Blob, apart from being so expensive they would destroy every functioning national economy on the planet, are going to be more damaging to the planet than continuing to burn coal and gas as our main source of energy and fuel out vehicles with oil. The Blob propose abandoning this reliable, consistent source in favour of intermittent, unreliable sources, primarily wind and solar powered generators. The Boggart Bloggers have written on the shortcomings of these technologies many times.

A small, clean, green, and utterly reliant on the vagaries of the weather, 100-megawatt wind farm needs 30,000 tons of iron ore; 50,000 tons of concrete and 900 tons of non-recyclable plastic.

For the same power from an ever-so-green solar farm you need to increase those figures by 150 per cent.

An battery pack for a small electric car weighs half a ton, to make just one requires the mining of 250 tons of bedrock somewhere on the planet, and the smelting and refining processes consume vast amounts of energy mostly derived from oil, natural gas and coal.

All these ‘clean, green, renewable’ methods of generation require what are called ‘rare earth metals,’ which are actually quite plentiful but occur in such low concentrations that separating them from the ores in which they are found makes them phenomenally expensive, as well as resulting in vast quantities of toxic shite (including cyanide, arsenic, nitric and hydrochloric acid,) so a phenomenal 2000 tons of toxic waste is produced and most of it is dumped in the environment, just to produce one ton of the any of the rare earth metals needed to make wind turbines, solar panels or lithium ion batteries. On top of all this, processing and shipping is required to the developed nations, and this is usually provided from companies based in from unregulated regimes (e.g. Liberia,) with very lax environmental standards.

As mentioned above Solar and wind generation is limited by its dependence on weather conditions, another issue we have commented on many times, but we need energy ALL the time, so we have to have permanent back-up of a type that can kick in instantly because both cloud cover and wind speeds can change very quickly and it is not possible to turn a key or press a button and start a combined cycle gas generator they way we start our car or switch on the vacuum cleaner.

And then there is the land requirement because the amount of productive land lost to production of food due to the spread of ‘renewables’ is astounding.

To accommodate 2,000 MW of gas or nuclear power generation requires the same area of two 18-hole golf courses. Whereas, accommodating 2,000 MW of wind power requires an area the size of Belgium!

Then, of course, you still need 2,000 MW of gas or nuclear power to accommodate those hundreds of occasions each year when wind and solar power is producing absolutely nothing.

One of the proposed solutions is to build vast battery farms to store surplus energy when wind and sunshine give us a surplus, but apart from their not being enough known lithium reserves in the world to provide adequate backup for just on developed nation, a statistic I read recently claims the giant Tesla factory in Nevada would take 500 years to make enough batteries to supply the USA with electricity for 1 day!

After 30 years of development and countless billions of £$€ in grants, subsidies and incentive payments, wind and solar still supply less than 5 per cent of the world’s energy. You may have seen screaming headlines in mainstream media proclaiming that on a particular day ‘renewables’ generated over 50% of the UK’s consumed electricity, b.ut contrast that with the deafening silence when on cold, windless winter days when solar and wind between then provide less than 5%.

On top of that, in common with all technology, wind turbines and solar panels are built from non-renewable materials, and they break down, parts wear out or break and have to be replaced time and time again, so installation is definitely not a one-off cost. Instead of ‘saving the planet’ the Green Blob and their rampaging renewables are actually devouring it!

Accoring to former prime minister Theresa May, tying the government and by default the long suffering taxpayers of this country into a legally binding commitment to achieve ‘net zero’ by 2050 was one of the crowning achievements of her time in office although how she could possibly know what would happen several decades in the future is a mystery, especially as she clearly did not know what was going on around her at the time. Well let’s be honest, the Maybot screwed up every contemporary policy action so there were no other achievements with which anyone who cared thirty years in the future could compare. There was no outcome May would ever have to deal with so I suppose a meidocre, incompetent politician like May would consider having got away with making a law that was guaranteed to trash the national economy and drive millions of Britons into third world levels of poverty an achievement.

The green revolution which Theresa May and her government embraced was only ever an illusion given false credibility by promise: of cheaper energy, of greener jobs, and of a cleaner environment.

Only five years down the line and that wildly optimistic and myopic view of the net-zero myth is rapidly collapsing into ruins. Last month’s auction of licences for offshore wind farm developments – where no bids to build new offshore wind were submitted – served as a heads up not just to the wind industry, but to everyone individual and organisation with a financial interest the net-zero transition.

This was a profound humiliation for the renewables industry and its supporters, and was understood to be due to costs spiralling out of control and output from all types of renewables technologies falling far short of levels predicted by scientists and their mathematical models. This week Tom Glover, chair of RWE Renewables UK arm, has suggested that prices per megawatt hour will need to rise substantially, from £44 to somewhere between £65 and £75.

In other words: wind farms might generate energy at zero cost if we ignore the initial capital investment in manufacturing and erecting the turbine and the very high maintenance costs, but for it to be economically viable once capital investement, maintenance and distribution costs are accounted for it is almost double the price of power generated in gas, nuclear or coal powered generators. And higher costs mean higher bills.

It turns out energy policy isn’t as straightforward as the greener we get, the cheaper things get. Glover’s comments are a far more honest assessment than the eco-equivalent of “have your cake and eat it” line we’ve been fed for years. But with that honesty also comes some mandatory reassessment.

We have been totally misled by politicians and vested interests (grant phishing scientists, profiteering ‘green blob’ corporations,) about the likely consequences of what is if we’re honest, a trivial fkluctuation in global average temperatures.

Wind energy – once you include the required grid upgrades, storage and backup requirement – are multiples more expensive than the demonised fossil fuel and nuclear resources that currently generate most of our energy.

We have been deceived by Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) figures that don’t include any of the major cost factors for renewables, most blatantly the huge upfront capital investment. We should be furious. We should be out in the streets demanding that Energy Department ministers and civil servants’, senior executives of renewable energy businesses’ and the mad scientists mad scientists’ heads be displayed on spikes around the perimeter railings of The Palace of Westminster! (metaphorically of course.) They have all betrayed the public and serve political agendas nobody ever has or would vote for.

Once you include those and the required grid, storage and backup, the LCOE rises from the advertised $40/MWh, to nearer $300/MWh. (coal power being around $60)

To embezzle taxpayer’s money in the way all these people have is a heinous crime by any standards. This money is forcibly taken from all of us on pain of imprisonment. Students pay tax (VAT), pensioners also. Car owners pay road tax, fulel tax and excise duty (and VAT on all those taxes,) people who enjoy a beer or a glass of wine or spirits pay tax and duty on their pleasure, people who like a bet on the horses or other sporting events pay betting tax. There are myriad other taxes, licence fees, duties, tolls etc. that we pay to national and local government. In total almost half of our hard – earned goies back to these self serving scumbags. Our money should be treated with respect. The fact that dishonest con artists in government, business, academia and media have all had their snouts in the trough we so generously fill, promising energy security but actually delivering us into energy poverty and ruin is an insult to all of us.

The Truth Is Out, Net Zero Will Bakrupt The World

A study by the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC), published on Tuesday 18 October, estimates in its advice to government that if the UK is to hit its 2050 target for achieving ‘Net Zero’, taxpayers will have to find roughly double the amount of money the nation would have had to spend on renewing and updating energy and transport infrastructure over the next 27 years to £2 trillion, the additional £1 trillion to be spent on the implementing the green agenda.

A trillion, its easy to say but is an unimaginably big amount of money to find. A good illustration of how big is to imagine spending a pound a second every single second, no weekends, no holidays, no time off for good behaviour, for the next 31,709 years and 10 months (and yes, I did use a computers to work that out.)

31,710 years ago our ancestors, though they had moved on from the knuckle dragging phase of human evolution, were, as far as we know, still living in caves, eating raw meat and running around naked.

A trillion is a conservative estimate of course. Given that the UK national debt is increasing at roughly one million pounds every three and a half minutes and that our spending on health and welfare, energy, roads and railways, education, defence, environment etc. etc. is not likely to go down that estimated cost of Net Zero is likely to increase exponentially in the way government projects always do and end up having cost not two trillion but 22 trillion in 27 years time.

So unless government suddenly comes to its senses and realises that unless we want to return to living in caves, eating raw meat and running around naked we had better abandon ‘net zero’ unless it plans to reduce unemployment by hiring gangs of muscular people to shovel money into firey furnaces (thus causing lots of CO2 to be emitted.) Most of the (estimated) extra trillion would go on replacing petrol cars with electric ones and gas boilers with electric heat pumps, and on generating, transmitting and distributing the extra electricity needed for these two uses. It also includes a host of other capital projects, including better household insulation. With all that electric demand, we would need extra power stations, extra pylons and upgrades of household electrical circuits. And we would need subsidies for installing the heat pumps and buying electric vehicles. And if anyone thinks that lot could be done for a paltry one trillion, that person is probably working as a senior economic adviser for the treasury department.

According to the assessment £74 billion would have to be spent on closing down and decommissioning the gas network: the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC), which was set up to promote economic growth, has been so totally hijacked by the bansturbators of the green lobby that it is now a National Dismantling Commission.

With the exception of home insulation, very little of that £1 trillion would actually improve your lifestyle in any practical way. It does not promise to give you cheaper or more reliable electricity in fact wind and solar are proving more expensive and less reliable. It would not save you any money or give you any more spare time — or make you more productive.

It would generally replace smaller things with bigger things — more pylons, heavier cars, bigger radiators, wind farms occupying hundreds of acres of good land instead of gas turbine power stations occupying five acres — so it would actually clutter the world more.

Facts and arguments aren’t going to change the minds of Net Zero advocates of course. What will change their minds is the sense that those of us who do not enjoy the inflated salaries and inflation linked pensions of public sector workers, and therefore are opposed to all this Net Zero, save the planet bollocks (not of which is backed by scientific evidence, all the green lobby have is output from mathematical models,) and are getting angry. The fearmongering tactics favoured by the elite has failed as realisation grows that all these virtue signalling policies so beloved of the elite are going to impoverish us and push us back to the kind of living standards endured by working people in the nineteenth century and might just pick up out pitchforks and cudgels (metaphorical ones of course, we can do much more damage with a couple of household cleaning products and a cheap burner phone,) and going after Net Zero zealots, their energy efficient homes and their beloved pimped up and highly combustible golf trolleys.

They need to feel the need to abandon quasi – religious ideology at an emotional level and face mundane reality. And as we all know, because the elites, the wannabe overlords, taught us, fear is best weapon for changing minds.

The Spectator asks Is Germany turning against the EU’s Green Deal?
Last week it was President Macron who was rowing back on green measures. In a speech he asserted that Europe has, for now, gone far enough – if it introduces any more regulations without the rest of the world following suit then it will put investment at risk and harm the economy. This week, the European People’s Party – a centre right grouping which includes the German Christian Democrats, the party of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen – seems to be joining in.
The party is reported to be considering withdrawing its support for the European Commission’s Green Deal. That is the set of proposals which includes, for example, an EU-wide target for eliminating net carbon emissions by 2050. Whilst 11 EU countries have already set themselves legally-binding targets to reach net zero by 2050 (or 2045 in the case of Germany and Sweden), if the Green Deal were to go there would be no obligation on the other member states to follow suit.
Germany now seems to be taking over from France as the seedbed of opposition towards zero carbon policies, not least because it has more severe policies – and because its self-imposed, earlier target of reaching net zero by 2045 is increasingly looking out of kilter with reality.

The Green Revolution’s Dirty Secret

Much of the chatter in mainstream media these days revolves around achieving ‘net zero’, completing the transition to a clean, green, prosperity free world in order to ‘save the planet.’ Whether the planet needs saving or not is moot, the powers that be have decided there is big money to be made from ‘net zero’ and the switch to ‘sustainable’ energy and also that granting themselves powers to ban freedom to travel, the right to refuse untested and potentially dangerous medication, and the right to speak our minds, criticise the government’s policies, call out the pseudo – scientific bollocks cited by certain minorities in support of ideologies that deny basic scientific truths offers a path to establishing the authoritarian, technocratic world government they have craved for almost a century.
All around the world politicians, banks, global corporations, electricity producers and healthcare providers have merged into a unified machine around the idea that the new, clean, green economy can be achieved via a just transition to a global energy system free of carbon emissions.
Unfortunately there can be no energy transition without critical minerals: no batteries, no electric cars, no wind turbines and no solar panels. The sun provides raw energy, but electricity flows most economically through copper. Wind turbines need manganese, platinum and rare earth magnets. Nuclear power requires uranium. Electric vehicles require batteries made with lithium, cobalt and nickel and magnets. Indium and tellurium are integral to solar panel manufacturing.” And the mining and refining of these minerals is a series of environmentally disastrous processes involving the release of vast amounts of substances among the most toxic known to science being released into the environment. And the manufacturing processes involved in making the products these materials are needed for are even more damaging.
But hey, we’re not talking about measures to eliminate nasty toxic shite from the environment, the real enemy, according to academics, politicians and all manner of experts is Carbon Dioxide. OK, it may be a trace gas in the atmosphere, the presence of which is essential to the continuance of life on earth. The Science has declared CO2 the enemy and so we must strive to eliminate CO2 emissions from all human activity to create a clean, green, brave new world and never again dare to be so arrogant as to question The Science.

But exactly how clean and green is the net-zero economic strategy? A commentary by veteran Canadian environmental journalist Andrew Nikiforuk. Writing in The Tyee, a Vancouver-based online publication, Nikiforuk reviews the work of academics and a “rising chorus of renewable energy sceptics” who believe that the great transition to a renewable energy future is a green pipe-dream that is “vastly destructive.”
He is not the only one thinking along these lines. The International Energy Agency (IEA) published a special report recently, setting out its proposals for achieving ‘Net Zero’ carbon emissions. One of its headline demands is that gas-fired domestic boilers should no longer be sold after 2025. This echoes one of the main policies in the UK government’s Net Zero plan. This is no coincidence. National governments, including the UK, draw all of their climate policies from faceless global agencies like the IEA (as well as domestic quangos like the Climate Change Committee). This process leaves out one important constituency: the public.

A ban on gas boilers will impose serious costs on ordinary people. A backlash is highly likely. You might think the practicalities of the policy would be of interest to journalists and the media. But journalists have taken the IEA’s proposals at face value, and have mainly reported them without scrutiny.

Nikiforuk is not writing for NetZeroWatch. Nor is he in the same camp as anti-renewable author Alex Epstein, whose book, Fossil Future, rips the renewable alternatives and champions oil and gas. At The Tyee, Nikiforuk continues his work as an anti-fossil-fuel environmental writer whose books include Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of a Continent, and The Energy of Slaves: Oil and the New Servitude.

In his new commentary, which has received far too little attention in the media and among policy-makers, Nikiforuk spares no one and pulls no punches. “For largely ideological reasons,” he writes, “many greens and ‘transitionists’ have presented the transition to renewables as a smooth road with no potholes.” Drawing on the work of an array of analysts and scientists, Nikiforuk describes the destructive forces that will be unleashed by the global push to replace fossil fuels.

Even If The Climate Threat Was Real And Not Grossly Overstated, Net Zero Is Unaffordable
Trillions of dollars need to be spent every year for almost three decades to hit net zero targets, according to consultancy McKinsey. On top of current spending, the equivalent of half of all corporate profits will have to be invested to tackle global warming, it says. McKinsey highlights that gaining acceptance will be tough, especially from those paying energy bills.
But the alternative is more extreme weather, scarmongering experts warn. Such warnings have been debunked many times of course, statistics show there are no more extreme weather events now than the annual average going back to the beginning of reliable records. The difference is that run of the mill local disasters are sensationalised by media to make them seem like global crises.
The McKinsey report estimated that the annual cost of getting to net zero – when carbon dioxide emissions are completely reduced or offset – will be $9.2tn (£6.8tn).
The world is already spending $5.7tn a year to lower the impact of fossil fuels and use alternatives.
However, an extra $3.5tn, every year from 2021 to 2050, will need to be put towards alternative energy sources and land use including agriculture to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, it said.

Much of the impact of the renewable crusade should be obvious. Solar panels, windmills or electric cars cannot be built without mining more copper, lithium, iron and aluminium. “That means vastly more destructive scraping and digging of ocean floors, rainforests and tundras on a scale inconceivable to most environmentalists.”

Nikiforuk then highlights the inconceivable scale of the taskes involved in replacing current infrasructure with ‘net zero’ compatible systems, citing various sources, including Simon Michaux at Finland’s Geological Society. Michaux calculates that to replace 46,423 power stations run by oil, coal, gas and nuclear energy would require the construction of 586,000 power stations run by wind, solar and hydrogen.

Another example: “Every electric vehicle contains about 75 kilograms of copper or three times more than a conventional vehicle. A single wind turbine generally contains 500 kilograms of nickel. That nickel requires 100 tonnes of steelmaking coal to be refined. And every crystalline silicon solar panel contains 20 grams of silver paste. It takes 80 metric tons of silver to generate approximately a gigawatt of solar power.”

On copper, Michaux states that current copper reserves at 880 million tonnes are equal to approximately 30 years of production. “But industry will need 4.5 billion tonnes of copper to manufacture just one generation of renewable technologies,” he estimates. “That’s six times the volume of copper mined throughout history.”
When the cost of keeping supply chains stable during the energy transition, as well as broad energy investment is accounted for, calculation of how much the transition to a CO2 neutral energy system is much higher than estimates quoted by economists working for governments.
In spite of these realities more than 130 countries have pledged net zero emissions by 2050. European farmers are furious over a bullshit plan by the European Union which would force then to be treated as industrial plants, similar to steel mills or chemical works, in order to force them to cut greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution, the Financial Times reports.
Greek farmer Takis Kazanas, 66, and his four sons run a 230-acre ranch with 300 cattle ranch in the mountains overlooking the Thessalian Plain. While the farmers already capture biogas from cow dung, and use homemade manure vs. chemical fertilizer, Kazanas is one of many farmers up in arms over environmentalist bureaucrats who want to impose crippling new rules on them in order to cut emissions by 55% by 2030 vs. 1990 levels.

The sheer scale of the transformation that the European Commission is asking for in its Farm to Fork strategy — halving the amount of pesticides applied by 2030, cutting the use of fertilisers, doubling organic production and rewilding some farmland — would be remarkable even in less urgent times.
Yet it comes as the war in Ukraine has upended global food markets, and as farmers face a cut in subsidies in the Common Agricultural Policy, the €55bn-a-year programme that has underwritten Europe’s food security since 1962.

Now the Oxford University mathematician and physicist, researcher at CERN and Fellow of Keble College, Emeritus Professor Wade Allison has done the sums. The U.K. is facing the likelihood of a failure in the electricity supply, he concludes.
“Wind power fails on every count,” he says, adding that governments are ignoring “overwhelming evidence” of the inadequacies of wind power, “and resorting to bluster rather than reasoned analysis”.
Professor Allison’s dire warnings are contained in a short paper recently published by the Global Warming Policy Foundation. He notes that the energy provided by the Sun is “extremely weak”, which is why it was unable to provide the energy to sustain even a small global population before the Industrial Revolution with an acceptable standard of living. A similar point was made recently in more dramatic fashion by the nuclear physicist Dr. Wallace Manheimer. He argued that the infrastructure around wind and solar will not only fail, “but will cost trillions, trash large portions of the environment and be entirely unnecessary”.
In his paper, Allison concentrates on working out the numbers that lie behind the natural fluctuations in the wind. The full workings out are not complicated and can be assessed from the link above. He shows that at a wind speed of 20mph, the power produced by a wind turbine is 600 watts per square metre at full efficiency. To deliver the same power as the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant – 3,200 million watts – it would require 5.5 million square metres of turbine swept area. …

Britain’s newly installed Secretary of State for Energy, Grant Shapps, is still learning the job so perhaps we should cut him some slack, but even so a statement he made on our energy supply today shows astounding ignorance of technical details relating to his portfolio.
Answering a question in Parliament this morning about Britain’s ability to reach its target of getting 40% of our energy needs from sustainable sources, Shapps sneered that it was not possible for us to reach 40% now as we already get 43% from wind. Unfortunately the sneering sarcasm was misplaced but served to reveal the man in charge of energy policy does not know the difference between energy and electricity.
