Bombshell: Facebook co-founder says it’s ‘time to break up’ the social media giant

In an opinion piece for The New York Times Chris Hughes, the co – founder of Facebook has called for scandal – plagued the social media and data theft behemoth to be broken up and lambasted the “staggering” and “unchecked” power of his former friend and co – founder, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a lengthy and searing critique of Zuckerberg’s amoral, and often illegal behaviour at the helm of the social media corporation.

Hughes co-founded Facebook with Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 and watched “in awe” as the company grew over the last 15 years — but said he now feels a “sense of anger and responsibility” about how all-powerful and out-of-control the social media giant has become under the management of the increasingly power – crazed CEO.

Lashing out at the company, Hughes wrote in the NYT piece that Zuckerberg’s power and influence goes “far beyond that of anyone else in the private sector or in government.” People may think that is sour grapes, but Hughes has no reason to be bitter,  his time at Facebook made him a fortune estimated in the region of $500 million and he left of his own volition, having been quoted as saying, “ “Working with Mark is very challenging,” says Hughes. “You’re never sure if what you’re doing is something he likes or he doesn’t like. It’s so much better to be friends with Mark than to work with him.”

He has also said he thinks more of Zuckerberg’s friends who were involved in the creation of Facebook, most of whom he’s still in touch with, have left Zuckerberg’s empire in part because, like him, they got fed up with the CEO’s unpredictable and megalomaniacal behaviour.

“Working with Mark is very challenging,” says Hughes. “You’re never sure if what you’re doing is something he likes or he doesn’t like. It’s so much better to be friends with Mark than to work with him.”

In the article Hughes criticizes Facebook over “sloppy privacy practices,” “violent rhetoric and fake news,” and the “unbounded drive to capture ever more of our time and attention.” “It’s not that Zuckerberg is a bad person,” he writes, but “he’s human” and his focus on growth has “led him to sacrifice security and civility for clicks.”

There are many who would argue with the statement that Zuckerberg is human, given his robotic performances in front of members of the US Congress, UK Parliament and European Union regulators, biologically he may appear human but there is something misssing in his make up that renders him unable to understand why people might object to his company sharing users’ illegally obtained personal data with any organisation willing to pay for it.

Hughes also bemoans the fact that the obsessive workaholic Zuckerberg controls three core communications platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) and says that lack of competition, market or government regulation is a major problem. If a competitor crops up, Zuckerberg can simply choose to shut it down “by acquiring, blocking or copying it” in the manner it did with the Instagram and WhatsApp mergers. “There is no precedent for [Zuckerberg’s] ability to monitor, organize and even censor the conversations of two billion people.” Hughes warns.

It does not stop there, the article also reveals that Zuckerberg alone can decide how to configure Facebook’s algorithms to determine what people see in their News Feeds, what privacy settings they can use and even which messages get delivered.

Hughes also worries that Zuckerberg has “surrounded himself with a team that reinforces his beliefs instead of challenging them.” He believes that neither Facebook’s offer to appoint a “privacy czar” or the expected Federal Trade Commission (FTC) fine of $5 billion will be enough to rein in the corporate tyrant who heads Facebook.

The answer lies in more government regulation of technology companies’ activities and increased market competition through breaking up Zuckerberg’s empire into separate, competing organisations Hughes says. The lack of competition means that “every time Facebook messes up, we repeat an exhausting pattern: first outrage, then disappointment and, finally, resignation.”

What George Orwell was telling us!

Posted by by opher goodwin on Writer Beat Apr 2, 2019

If we learn anything from George Orwell’s writing it should be this one thing:

There is always an enemy that is threatening our way of life and our very existence. That is what the establishment wants you to believe. That is what they use to generate fear and to unify people. That is what they deploy to divert attention from the reality of what they are doing.

They are systematically exploiting the whole population for the benefit of a small elite. They are giving as little as they can to the majority so that they can cream off a huge slice for the top.

They are condensing power and wealth in a small establishment group while demonising minorities, creating exaggerated threats and using this as a distraction …

The Right To Tell Politicians To Eff Off In An Age Of Self Appointed Censors, and Compliant Media

“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.”?    George Orwell

Free speech is the foundation of democracy. If we lose free speech we have lost everything because, to put it simply, we can no longer ask the questions that hold ruling elites to account.

no_free_speech

Free speech is not for the faint hearted, saying what YOU believe to be true can attract some robust responses, so those arrested adolescents who want everybody to like them should avoid exercising their right to it. Those who are easily offended, quickly intimidated or the snivelling little cowards on university campuses who feel they are entitled to live in a ‘safe space’ where they will never see or hear anything that offends their delicate, politically correct sensibilities should stay away from free speech (preferably by dressing in baby clothes, sucking on titty bottles and locking themselves in a pink furry bedroom with lots of cuddly toys for company (or they could try to GROW THE FUCK UP of course.

Free speech can sometimes get angry, shouty, foul-mouthed, obscene, intolerant, undignified, insensitive, cantankerous, bawdy and downright fucking offensive. The problem is that the scum sucking spawn of a pox whore’s scab louse has just as much right to express their opinion as you and your ‘right – on’ friends.

Unfortunately, our appreciation for a robust freedom of speech has worn thin over the years.

Fear of free speech (liberglossophobia?) afflicts many in the English speaking world which has been hit harder by the plague of politically correct thinking than most places other cultures. Americans have become fearfully polite, hardly daring to say “good morning” lest it should offend somebody who thinks it is not a good morning. We have become reluctant to mention personal preferences because people who hate what we like might be offended by our preference being different to theirs. So hateful and furious have the responses of the ‘progressive left’ to those who stray ‘off – message’ become, people are unwilling to be labeled racist, bigoted,  intolerant, hateful, closed-minded or any of the other toxic (but rarely correctly applied) labels that carry a badge of shame today. We’ve come to prize compliance over freedom.

Worse, too many people are held hostage by their screen devices and the talking heads on television, have lost the ability to think critically or form their own opinions. Those who spend a lot of time dicking about with their smartphones or tablets are having their opinions formed for them, not by ‘The Wisdom Of The Crowd‘ (there is no crowd, only software filters that control what you see on the internet.)

Truly democratic societies cherish free speech and controversy (the true diversity rather than a facistic gesture of forcing people of different skin tones, religions and cultures to live side by side) and thus produce a robust democracy which respects the rights of others within a shared moral framework and will stand against authoritarian government.

Free speech has always been the first target of tyrants, oppressive regimes have traditionally understood the value of controlling citizens by controlling ideas by suppressing open discussion. The power elites have a vested interest in suppressing debate and publication of the data that informs debate, such controls are essential to controlling how a people view their society and government.

All politicians have an insatiable appetite for power which is a drug thousands of times more addictive than heroin or cocaine.  If they can turn the two-way dialogue that is representative democracy into a one-way dictatorship in which questioning government policy is crminalised (a move which Barack Obama, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron in the UK, France’s Francois Hollande, Chancellor angela Merkel of Germany and various Eurpean Union and United Nations bureaucrats have spoken of in relation to mass immigration policy or climate change scepticism) their grip on power is consolidated. Instead of news we will have propaganda, and instead of freedom we will have serfdom.

Emboldened by theraputic phrases from the pseudo – sciences of sociology and psychology such as “hate speech,” “bullying,” “extremism” and “microaggressions,” the government and their collaborators in internet social media are whittling away at free speech, ensuring it does not challenge the status quo in any meaningful way or goes against  politically correct ideals, and muzzling it when it threatens the elite’s control.

Free speech is no longer free.

Nor is free speech still considered an inalienable right or an essential liberty, even by those government entities entrusted with protecting it.

We’ve entered into an egotistical, insulated, narcissistic era in which free speech has been caged; paraded in political speeches by the hypocrites who fear it most, (i.e.  when it reflects the values of the majority or beyond our political, religious and socio-economic comfort zones )and tolerated only so long as it sticks to what is anodyne and boring and does not start asking difficult questions or telling embarrassing truths.

The Perils Of Centralized Power

savile thatcher
Centralized power – the worst of all possible worlds

For quite some time now, since I gave up trying to raise a smile most days because the world is now so insane it is impossible to parody or satirize it, a theme of this blog has been the dishonesty, corruption and culture of cover up that runs through government and the public sector.

It is not just this country either. Today’s first story, another chapter of the Paedophiles In High Places sage, come from the USA, a country whose rent-boy President, you may remember, actually appointed Kevin Jennings, a man who made a career out of campaigning for legalisation of sex with infants and equal rights for kiddie fiddlers, as a senior manager in the education department.

A Man Of Many Perversions” – Federal Cybersecurity Head Convicted Of Child Porn Charges

It doesn’t matter whether political or corporate, highly centralized power in any forms must be resisted wherever it rears its authoritarian head. Corporatism is fascism, Benito Mussolini said.

In this, the worst of all possible worlds, to paraphrase Dr. Pangloss such an unholy and undemocratic alliance has become reality as we have stood by and allowed the manipulators to engineer the union of corporate and political power in what we erroniously continue to call ‘the free world’ over recent decades. The inevitable result is that the combined forces of oligarchy begin to rapaciously plunder and ravish the citizenry with zero accountability. This is a fair description of Europe, The United States and other developed nations in 2014.

The problem with centralized power is that lack of accountibility which facilitates the culture of cover up (sic)and thus encourages sociopaths (for obvious reasons) gravitate toward, and greatly covet, positions of power.

Power is the most addictive drug known of course, and even lowly jobs in the public sector offer enough opportunity to fuck with peoples’ lives to attract neophyte sociopaths.

Once embedded in such positions, they are then able to act upon their desires with general immunity, and if they are caught, are often left in positions of power by others who at that point “own them” via blackmail.

This of course is nothing new, it is how the game of power politics and economics has been played since it was called the Game Of Thrones, the earliest civilisations. It is also why decentralization of power is the natural evolution we as a species must embrace in order to build a better world. And yet we see in Europe a push for greater integration and more surrender of sovereign power to Brussels my member states, we see in the USA more centralization of power on The White House and the increasingly Imperial President and around the world, through agencies like the United Nations, NAFTA, NATO and the G20 we see a push for global government.

And all the time the perverts who have insinuated themselves into the bureaucratic system that serves the power elite are getting on with corrupting innocence and destroying the values that hold society together. how do we know?

Well setting aside the Jimmy Savile affair and other celebrity scandals in which cover ups of wrongdoing protected criminals for decades and putting on th back burner the grooming scandals in Rotherham, Bradford, Newcastle, Oxford and London we only need to take a less than forensic look at world news.

Enter Timothy DeFoggi, the recently convicted former cybersecurity director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, who received several awards for his government “service” over the years. This self-proclaimed man of “many perversions,” frequented child porn sites where he paedophiles and those with an interest in adult – child sex could “exchange private messages with other members expressing interest in raping, beating and murdering infants and toddlers.”

Nice people.

from Wired.com

As the acting cybersecurity chief of a federal agency, Timothy DeFoggi should have been well versed in the digital footprints users leave behind online when they visit web sites and download images.

But DeFoggi—convicted today in Nebraska on three child porn charges including conspiracy to solicit and distribute child porn—must have believed his use of the Tor anonymizing network shielded him from federal investigators.

But DeFoggi’s conviction is perhaps more surprising than others owing to the fact that he worked at one time as the acting cybersecurity director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. DeFoggi worked for the department from 2008 until January this year. A department official told Business Insider that DeFoggi worked in the office of the assistant secretary for administration as lead IT specialist but a government budget document for the department from this year(.pdf) identifies a Tim DeFoggi as head of OS IT security operations, reporting to the department’s chief information security officer.

Although anyone could use the sites, registered users like DeFoggi—who was known online under the user names “fuckchrist” and “PTasseater”—could set up profile pages with an avatar, often child porn images, and personal information and upload files. The site archived more than 100 videos and more than 17,000 child porn and child erotica images, many of them depicting infants and toddlers being sexually abused by adults.

Now it would be easy to get the idea that there are paedophiles everywhere but this blog has never been interested in spreading fear and panic. There aren’t, it is still a relatively rare deviation. That so many of them have ended up in public life, in the Churches and the education system is due to the reasons set out in the opening paragraphs, mainly that centralization of power protects them and bureaucratic organisations have a collective instinct, a kind of hive mentality, that causes individuals to close ranks and protect the organisation.

As that great journalist Bernard Levin once said, “The least amount of power always leads to the greatest desire to abuse it.

Propaganda and Journalism: A lesson for the left

W W 1 - a bloodbath justified by propaganda World War One – a bloodbath justified to the public by the kind of propaganda now being directed against Russia (source)

A few days ago I posted an article on the significant details regarding the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine, and the inconsistencies in the US / EU narrative that the government propaganda was not discussing and that mainstream media were not questioning.

The article attracted a few comments and one troll, a wannabe intellectual bully who wanted to convince me that I had no right to question the ‘official’ (i.e. American) version of events. There have been swarms of such trolls around the web, citing spurious credentials in an effort to establish that their (politically-correct, oligarchic collectivist) opinions are somehow made more valid by the fact that they question nothing that comes out of the FUKUS axis propaganda machine.

This particular troll emphasised his lack of intelligence by accusing me of believing the Russian / Ukraine separatist version of events. All I had said in fact was that there was absolutely no evidence to support President Obama’s accusation made hours after the disaster, that the government of Russia was undoubtedly responsible. He chose to interpret this as implying that I accepted the Russian version of events which blamed the Ukrainian government in Kiev for shooting down flight MH17. Bizarrely he claims he is a scientists. Not the only scientist I’ve encountered who is in need of remedial education in reading and comprehension.

I accepted no such thing. And I was proved right (as always), when the US State Department was challenged to substantiate its claims, a spokesperson referred reporters to social media chit chat.

We still don’t know who was responsible, theories that point to both separatist rebels with Russian support and Kiev government troops with US/EU support are still circulating but no conclusive evidence has been produced either way.

This devotion to partisan propaganda is not confined to the left however. On a television news analysis today the veteran journalist Max Hastings, who identifies himself as a conservative, was talking about reactions from online readers to his articles for a top selling newspaper supporting the American / European line and damning Russia.

Hastings admitted that the line he had taken was “People must believe the west, we’re the good guys, they’re the bad guys.”

He then said that a theme repeated by many commenters from around the world was; Why should we believe the Americans and British, they are proven liars on Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Egypt, Syria, drone strikes on Pakistan and the overthrow of the elected Ukrainian government.

And that acknowledgement, plus perhaps the fact that as days count down to the hundredth anniversary of the opening shots in World War One, explains why new media and many clear thinking, honest writers in mainstream media are taking a different line. People who have read a little history are remembering how as the world stumbled into that senseless bloodbath with governments on both sides lying to their citizens and the media of the day repeating those lies:

The World According to the Mainstream Media: Russia and Palestine are Guilty until Proven Innocent
Timothy Alexander Guzman
RINF Alternative News

They accused the Russian government and the Anti-Kiev militias in East Ukraine for its direct involvement in the downing of Malaysian Airlines MH-17 without any hard evidence to support their claim. US intelligence agencies did admit that Russia was not directly linked to the Malaysian Airlines incident, but they managed to blame Russia indirectly. They claimed “that Russia was responsible for “creating the conditions” that led to the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, but they offered no evidence of direct Russian government involvement” according to ABC news.

The accusations against Russia were baseless. What is important to the families of the Malaysian Airlines tragedy is for them to find out the truth about those responsible for the crimes. Blaming actors who are not responsible for the crime will not bring peace to the families. The MSM has been actively defending Israeli actions against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip declaring that it was Hamas that murdered the three Israeli teens, an accusation that was also never proven. Regardless of the facts on the tragic deaths of those teenagers, Israel had declared a “revenge” war on the Palestinians. The MSM is following Washington and Tel Aviv’s talking points.

The bias reporting on the situation in Gaza is shameful. The death toll surpassed 800 for the Palestinians and for the Israeli’s it’s close to 40 casualties. The US and their Western partners along with their Israeli counterparts are working in conjunction against their political adversaries through its MSM Empire. They want war and they will do anything even have their media lie to the public in order to go what they want. What had occurred in the last couple of weeks concerning events in the Ukraine and Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are both tragic incidents, but the point I am making reflects on the MSM itself and their lack of journalistic principals.

Here’s another view of the Malaysia Airlines controversy authored by two people whose names alone are guaranteed to kick off an irrational two minutes hate session from the neo – fascist left, Chris. Booker and Richard North:

Could Barack Obama have prevented the MH17 disaster?

US intelligence would have known the separatists had captured missile-launchers, and where they were being used

Christopher Booker in The Daily Telegraph

The most alarming unanswered question over the shooting-down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 is so fearful to contemplate that it has scarcely even been asked. Had President Obama in fact been better placed than anyone else to prevent that disaster from taking place? When, in his statement 24 hours after the plane was downed, the President stoked speculation about the involvement of President Putin, did he deliberately obscure the fact that, days earlier, he had already learned enough from his many intelligence sources to know that the 55 international airliners travelling every day along that flight path over eastern Ukraine faced the threat of precisely such a disaster? If so, why did the US authorities not make it a top priority to ensure that such flights were immediately halted?

In all the initial confusion over what Mr Obama called “this outrage of unspeakable proportions”, there was a hysterical rush to pin the blame on Russia’s president. “Putin’s killed my son”, as one newspaper front page had it. But, over the days that followed, as ever more information emerged about this story, the US government appeared to be backtracking on its original narrative.

I don’t necessarily agree with Booker but he presents information that is worth considering as we classical liberals, libertarians and freethinkers consider all aspects of the case and form our own individual opinions. The notion of presenting an argument we may not totally and utterly agree with is incomprehensible to the knee jerkers (and wrist jerkers?) of the neo – fascist left of course. They love to march in lockstep, chant the slogans, and embrace the causes along with the rest of the crowd.

BUK missile launcher - infographicBUK Missile Launcher -NB people who think mathematical modelling is involved in aiming and firing these, it’s a radar guided system, sorree.

The spectacle of the progressive left or progressive liberals exposing inner fascist as the support authoritarian governments and clamour for war is becoming a major topic for freethinkers, radicals and true liberals. In this and my other blogs I have constantly taken an anti war line, the troll referred to in the first part of this article accuses me of being a right wing extremist (I suppose the scum sucking spawn of a pox whores scablouse thinks he is insulting me – well I said he’s not very good at English,) yet over the past few years he has consistently been in favour of war and military intervention by the FUKUS axis in the domestic affairs of sovereign states. It’s supposed to be the left who are pacifists and the right who love war, yet the neo fascist left seem to be mad for war and slaughter.

Perhaps this article goes some way to explaining why liberals and left wing thinkers hold the masses is such contempt:

How did liberals become so elitist and contemptuous of the public?

liberal democrat brain
The new left brain does not collect and process information in a logical, orderly, reasonable, and objective manner. Rather, liberal thinking is dominated by an obsession with power, and use of that power to preserve and or advance elitist advantages. (source)

How did liberals become so elitist and contemptuous of the public?

Daniel Ben-Ami
Journalist and author

10 July 2014

iberalism is one of a select band of troublesome political concepts that has multiple meanings. Indeed, ‘liberalism’ as used in one context can be the opposite of what it means in another.

The attitude of liberalism to freedom provides a prime example of these contradictory meanings. Classical liberalism, which was to the fore in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, typically placed a heavy emphasis on the importance of individual autonomy and liberty. In sharp contrast, contemporary liberalism tends to be deeply intolerant and elitist.

Fred Siegel, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a conservative think tank based in New York, has provided an enormous service with his innovative history of modern American liberalism, The Revolt Against the Masses. It helps put many of the most retrograde trends in the US into their proper context. It also helps shed light on parallel developments in other countries, including Britain, even though they are outside Siegel’s remit.

For Siegel, a defining feature of modern liberalism is its attachment to what he calls the clerisy – a technocratic elite which he identifies with academia, Hollywood, the prestige press, Silicon Valley and Wall Street. Despite its professed attachment to equality of opportunity, this elite holds the mass of the American public, what Siegel refers to as ‘the middle class’, in contempt. The clerisy sees itself as superior to the rest of the population on meritocratic grounds.

As the reach of the state has burgeoned, the clerisy has taken on an increasingly important social role. Over the years, American government has grown vastly, commanding more resources and employing more people, than ever before. As Joel Kotkin, one of the sharpest observers of contemporary American politics, has pointed out: ‘Since 1990, the number of government workers has expanded by some five million to some 20million. That’s four times the number who were employed by the government at the end of the Second World War, a growth rate roughly twice that of the population as a whole.’ Members of the technocratic elite present themselves as impartial experts, but their interests are closely tied to the fortunes of this vast state apparatus.

So there you are. Once you stop yourself being caught up in the medieval witch hunt tactics of the ‘left’, take a step back and view the bigger picture and start thinking for yourself, a very different picture emerges to the one painted by our hysterical leftie trolls as they clamour for the global war their bankster sponsors want for purposes of increasing their control, grabbing even more money and reducing the global population. Now are you still prepared to believe these facists because they tell you they are the cuddly side of the argument.

Those people of accuse me of being “anti-science” need to read this. I am not anti – science (science means knowledge so it is not possible to be anti – science. What I am anti is lunacy, giving psychopaths power and wasting taxpayers money – and if that means some twat kills himself because what I write makes him realise he will never walk on Mars or explore distant galaxies, well so what? The world needs less arseholes.)

Yes sci-fi writers hard up for new material should spend an hour or so perusing the Defense Department?s 2015 budget proposal, especially the section covering the far-out research projects underway at DARPA, where the agency?s mad scientists are working to develop brain-controlled drones, biowarfare, engineer new life forms, and possibly attempt immortality.

If last year was the year of battlefield robots, cyborg soldiers, and weaponized drones, it looks like the next couple years will see the Pentagon gearing up for a deep dive into biotech. DARPA announced today it now has an unit devoted to studying the intersection of biology and engineering, the Biological Technologies Office. The agency is betting that the next generation of defense tech will be take a cue from natural life, and as such one of the major focuses of the new unit will be on synthetic biology. It?ll ramp up research into manufacturing biomaterials, turning living cells, proteins, and DNA into a sort of genetic factory.

About the Stop Killer Robots Campaign:

Over the past decade, the expanded use of unmanned armed vehicles has dramatically changed warfare, bringing new humanitarian and legal challenges. Now rapid advances in technology are resulting in efforts to develop fully autonomous weapons. These robotic weapons would be able to choose and fire on targets on their own, without any human intervention, raising numerous ethical, legal, moral, policy, technical, and other concerns with fully autonomous weapons. Giving machines the power to decide who lives and dies on the battlefield is an unacceptable application of technology. The Campaign to Stop Killer Robots is an international coalition of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working to ban fully autonomous weapons.

The Lincolnshire Poetcher And Her Wind Farm Message

Boggart Blog has been telling you for years that wind farms are a waste of space (more of our climate change posts). Wind turbines are so finnicky about the wind speed being in the right range and the air temperature being not too hot and not too cold but just right that they only generate viable amounts of electricity for twenty five percent of the time (wind turbine truth) and then neglegible quantities reach the grid. One would be forgiven for thinking the government’s green energy policy was about making wind farm operators rich rather than generating cheap, clean, sustainable power.

But logic does not sway the Warmageddonists, after all they have statistics and graphs always trump reality.

So maybe Lincolnshire poet Jane Air has taken the right approach in appealing to our emotions and aesthetic sensibilities in her poem

Lincolnshire Wind Farms

Here’s a little taste:

A meadow
Of metal petals
All planted in a row
Are flowers in the wind
Petal propellers spinned

Metal petals, how can you not love that image?

I don’t know how Jane makes her living, wouldn’t it be fun if she’s a teacher, they we could call her The Lincolnshire Poetcher.
